With no CFB prospects for another 7 months, this is the perfect time to begin collecting the immense wisdom of crowds** to offer direct 1-on-1 advice to various coaches. The poor guys usually have to wade through hundreds of thousands of posts to find points to copy. So I wanted to give this thread topic a shot.

To the extent possible, please no insults in this thread (feel free to create new/different threads or use one of dozens of existing ones for that). Be constructive. I realize that a bulk of the advice will be directed Brian's way but he is by no means the only guy to address in this thread. Also restrict letters/comments to topics related to the game of football. Use the "INSERT TABLE" formatting to put letters in a clearly marked cell/box -- this will permit actual letters to be easily distinguished from discussion/comments.

**"The great scientist Francis Galton had collected some data from the 1906 West of England Fat Stock and Poultry Exhibition; 787 people at this exhibition guessed the weight of a steer. Their average guess was 1,197 pounds. The actual weight of the steer: 1,198 pounds."

I'll get the letters started with this one addressed to the Iowa Offensive Coordinator

Dear Brian Ferentz,
In 2022, you return two QBs with different strengths and weaknesses but with the common element of experience. You've had ample opportunity to study these guys not just at practice but during games that mattered for extended periods. This is an advantage you should exploit. Do not just appoint one guy as starter and the other as backup and then wait passively for a situation that calls for the backup to play. i.e. do not use the backup QB simply to replaced an injured starter or to bring in if the starter screws up game after game.

Points for you to consider:
(1) Decide on the guy you are comfortable with as starter early (as in spring). This is the guy who will be your fulltime starter to begin the season.
(2) The backup should become a specialist of sorts instead of the generalist (that the starter is). You can afford to do this because the backup has ample experience already and isn't going to be at sea if/when called upon to running standard plays. By specialist I mean -- he will run a set of plays (in fact an offense) that a defense will be unable to adjust for without having scouted before.
(3) Play the starter in all games that Iowa is favored to win and do whatever it is that you normally do. Do the same against mi, and osu even if we are not favored. So about 3 games remain -- nw, wi, at pu
(4) Play the starter against these remaining opponents but have a proactive plan to introduce the backup QB and alternate offense for a few drives/series. Introduce the alternative offense at pre-planned times/situations.
(5) Even if the backup/alternate offense is wildly successful against an opponent, do not change course and overuse.
Regards,
Desihawk

Some points:

1. None of Iowa’s coaches will read that.
2. They know more than you do.
im hoping some folks will write regardless if nothing more than to provide interesting input. can’t be that bad to have such content infest this forum :)

You realize they are two different words, right?
yes, i did google advise showed up as "offer suggestions about the best course of action to someone." however, i was in a hurry at the time and missed it was usage as verb, so left as is at the time. That said, i've edited to correct. thank you.

Dear coaches just win baby, just win…

Nothing else really matters. Even your critics sound pretty stupid then…

On the other hand if you lose it pretty much doesn’t matter what you do it will it be the wrong thing….

Went for it on fourth down and lost… Should’ve kicked….Didn’t go for it on fourth down and lost should’ve went for it…

Benched the starting QB & the second string lost then you should’ve played the third string if you play the third string and you still lost then you should’ve recruited better…

You know because if you’re a good coach you win all of your games and the other team really isn’t trying to win too..

The end!!

Dear Kirk,
Can you please promote you kid to something that sounds really cool but doesn't actually involve any football decisions whatsoever?
Sincerely,
red/green hawk

And Kirk,

Get rid of Brian he is the only reason we haven’t won three or four national championships now…

Yeah we know dad‘s uncles brothers routinely have family members on the staff and more often than not they deserve it but it doesn’t matter here…he’s got to go and we will most assuredly win everything then.

Oh and mostly Kirk we are watching you. We know you aren't playing the right people and because we think we can point pinpoint three or four instances where you really screwed up…then frankly it’s easy for us to assume that we know more about certain parts of the game than you do…

Dear Brian:

Now that Josh McDaniel has been hired as Raiders Head Coach, please go be the Patriots OC.
