Huge series between two Top 4 teams in the B1G. The 3 games are being played in Piscataway, NJ.

Current B1G Standings:
1. Rutgers (31-7, 11-1)
2. Illinois (19-15, 10-2)
3. Maryland (30-7, 7-2)
4. Iowa (21-12, 6-3)

Why the B1G Conference can't get at least one of these 3 games on regular BTN TV is a total head scratcher. Instead, if you want to watch, you have to pay extra.

All 3 games are being video streamed on BTN Plus. An Iowa monthly pass is $9.95. An annual pass is $79.95.

Rutgers and Illinois are either going to separate themselves this weekend or it's a five team race.

Nice preview Kyle, but one clarification. Jared Kollar is a transfer from DII Seton Hill. The Grifins have been loaded the last couple of seasons, and in addition to Kollar, had 3 other players transfer to DI programs.

Ahh yes I did miss that. On their website it just says “Career at Seton Hill”. No mention of Dll or anything, so I just quickly glanced and read Seton Hall.

Both Kollar and Patrick Monteverde were absolute studs on the Seton Hill team a couple seasons ago. Monteverde transferred to Texas Tech and had around a 3.50 ERA before being drafted by The Marlins.

Having seen Kollar, he fits the bill of a great college pitcher. Fastball in the low 90's and (when it's on) a nasty hammer of a curve. Right handed batters I've talked to have trouble picking it up because his release point coupled with the massive spin gets on them quick. Lefties tend to see him better, but when he's on Kollar can spot that pitch on the outer third for a strike.

Kyle's preview mentioned he has only walked 12 batters all season. He also doesn't spray the ball around. Just 2 wild pitches and 2 hit batters. Hence only 1 unearned run 9 games.

Most hitters (Iowa is no different) will step into the box hunting the fastball. But if Kollar's curve is on, Hawkeye hitters will need to adjust their approach if they are going to be successful.

Here are some interesting tidbits from the Game Notes provide by the UI. @non-poster & @KyleHuesmann , note that the UI also states that Kollar, who is 6-0 with a 2.56 ERA, is a Seton Hall transfer. ;)

9 Rutgers players are hitting over .300, all nine players have 23 or more RBIs and five players have seven or more home runs. Nick Cimillo is hitting .404 with 13 doubles, nine home runs, 45 runs and 31 RBIs. He has a .699 slugging and .512 on-base percentage.

• On the mound, Rutgers lead the Big Ten in ERA (3.09) and rank fifth nationally. The Scarlet Knights have allowed the fewest runs in the Big Ten (141/116) and are limiting hitters to a .216 average.

Defensively, RU leads the B1G with a .979 fielding percentage.

Friday starter Jared Kollar is 6-0 with a 2.56 ERA (3-0 with a 3.47 ERA in Big Ten play), allowing 36 hits and 16 runs over 52 2/3 innings. The Seton Hall transfer has 59 strikeouts to 12 walks.

Iowa is averaging 10.2 runs and hitting .352 as a team during its five-game winning streak. The Hawkeyes have 19 extra-base hits (12 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR) during the stretch. Peyton Williams is hitting .579 (11-of-19) with nine RBIs.

• The Hawkeyes have overcome deficits in 15 games this season. Iowa is 11-4 in such contests.

• Iowa’s pitching staff has been remarkable through the first two-plus months of the 2022 season, allowing just 202 hits and fanning 411 over 299 1/3 innings, while limiting hitters to a .180 average.

Iowa leads the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (12.4) and is second in hits allowed per nine innings (6.07). The Hawkeyes are also 12th in ERA (3.49) and 18th in WHIP (1.25).

The pitching staff ranks in the top four in the Big Ten in six categories. Iowa leads the Big Ten in strikeouts (411), fewest hits allowed (202) and batting average against (.190), while ranking second in ERA (3.49), fewest runs (132) and earned runs allowed (116).

• Seventeen of Iowa’s 33 games have been decided by two runs or fewer. The Hawkeyes are 9-8 in such contests.

Iowa has advanced to the postseason in six of Heller’s eight seasons (there was no Big Ten/NCAA Tournament in 2020 and no Big Ten Tournament in 2021 because of COVID). He has led the Hawkeyes to two NCAA Regional appearances (2015, 2017).
