******official Phil Parker doesn't get enough luv thread*******

I'll have to take solace in knowing socal and FBnBB will start a dozen threads on the same topic.
As long as PP gets the luv I'm good

His defense gave up two plays on the other side of the 50. That's two too many for my liking

A lot of truth to this one about Parker not getting enough pub. I have heard enough about Don Brown...A big concern coming into 2018 was the back 7, but what has occurred this year is something we haven't seen at Iowa that I can remember.

LBs: Lose Jewell, Niemann and Bower (90+ starts) after 2017 which is not a shock; but the following is where Phil earns his paycheck.
1) Losing Mends in Spring Practice missed 7 games to date
2) Losing Niemann for 2 games
3) Losing Hockaday for 2.5 games

This is the 1st time that I would say that Iowa has reloaded vs rebuild and it is happening at LB and the DBs. Argue can be made the D is much better this year without 3 guys who are playing on Sunday.

Welch RS JR; played sparingly as a FR & SOPH but playing well
Colbert RS FR; performing well and looks like he may be in this spot for a long time
Niemann TR SOPH; locked in for the foreseeable future
Wade RS SOPH; comes up with the coach talk
McDonald; High Rated Recruit - injured 2018
Doyle; High Rated Recruit - probably will play 4 games and then have him for 4 more years
Bensen; Opened eyes and has been on 2 Deep

Then there is Jacobs and Campbell coming in next year.

If that isn't enough, the Secondary is nothing short of astounding.
Players Lost from 2017: Snyder, Rugamba and Josh Jackson
Starters Hankins (missed last 3 games) & Ojemudia (missed 1 game and limited last 2) had limited experience coming into 2018 and then Parker has to plug in two True FR in Moss & Brents and you could argue we haven't missed a beat. Moss got picked on during his 1st start, but when you are targeted 17 times, good chance they are going to complete some passes. If someone said by game 4, we would be starting 2 TR FR at CB, there would have been a meltdown on this board...

Waiting in the wings Johnson (highly rated recruit who if not injured, may be playing too), Creamer & Turner as well as Craddieth at S.

Hooker
is playing at an All B10 level and Stone is a really good back-up. Would like to see him play more. Then there is Castro and Belton coming who were targeted early and have their commits.

Today, the D allowed 114 yards, which is different from our Bend, Don't Break where we give up yards between the 20s and then clamp down.

What Parker is doing is amazing and should be considered for Coordinator of the Year.

speaking of Niemann and Hockaday, are they supposed to be back next week? I sure hope so. and same question with Hankins. don't think I saw any of those guys out there today, which, if true, makes it all the more impressive.

This week, up to 5th best scoring defense in the land.
Has he ever won a national award? He would make a fine HC imo.

And I think, off the top of my head, that mistakes by the offense and special teams deep inside the red zone have led directly to about 31 of the points scored on Iowa this year. Tough to blame the D for those. And even with all that, they're still top five in the nation in scoring defense.

And the prep for teams like Maryland and their unusual offense has been spectacular.

Every week is a new challenge, but so far Parker and his guys have met almost every one.

I'll be honest. Several years ago I was on the "fire Parker" bandwagon. I'm glad my opinion is not taken into consideration ever.
I'm very happy with him now.

Thanks to Bill Brashier, Norm, and Phil, the Hawkeyes have had consistently good defenses for a long time.

Bill Brashier

Iowa defensive coordinator: 1983
Assistant coach to Fry for 28 years

They were all guys that were just starting in their careers. They all knew they wanted to coach and go as far as they go, but they were just starting.

You could tell they were very conscientious and knew what they were doing, but they had not had a chance to really prove themselves in the arena. It wasn't like they came with a long list of what they'd done and where they'd been. They were just a bunch of young guys starting out.

Hayden knew one way, and it was his way. That's what he taught.

Alvarez: Coach Brashier was maybe as strong as anybody on that staff. He was way ahead of his time defensively, and players loved to play for him.

McCarney: The smartest one of the whole bunch was Bill Brashier. He never was a head coach, but you talk about a helluva football coach. There is always some glue guys who hold a staff together besides the head coach, and Bill Brashier was that guy.

Ferentz: I always told anyone who would listen that Bill Brashier was as good a coach I've worked around at any level. To me, he's in the same class as Bill Belichick and Nick Saban.

I am really excited about this game. The D has had to have this one circled since they have given up close to 1,000 yards the last two games. Based on Hesse interview, have a strong feeling they are going to make up for these games on Saturday.

Give 'em hell Hawks!!
