A lot of truth to this one about Parker not getting enough pub. I have heard enough about Don Brown...A big concern coming into 2018 was the back 7, but what has occurred this year is something we haven't seen at Iowa that I can remember.
LBs: Lose Jewell, Niemann and Bower (90+ starts) after 2017 which is not a shock; but the following is where Phil earns his paycheck.
1) Losing Mends in Spring Practice missed 7 games to date
2) Losing Niemann for 2 games
3) Losing Hockaday for 2.5 games
This is the 1st time that I would say that Iowa has reloaded vs rebuild and it is happening at LB and the DBs. Argue can be made the D is much better this year without 3 guys who are playing on Sunday.
Welch RS JR; played sparingly as a FR & SOPH but playing well
Colbert RS FR; performing well and looks like he may be in this spot for a long time
Niemann TR SOPH; locked in for the foreseeable future
Wade RS SOPH; comes up with the coach talk
McDonald; High Rated Recruit - injured 2018
Doyle; High Rated Recruit - probably will play 4 games and then have him for 4 more years
Bensen; Opened eyes and has been on 2 Deep
Then there is Jacobs and Campbell coming in next year.
If that isn't enough, the Secondary is nothing short of astounding.
Players Lost from 2017: Snyder, Rugamba and Josh Jackson
Starters Hankins (missed last 3 games) & Ojemudia (missed 1 game and limited last 2) had limited experience coming into 2018 and then Parker has to plug in two True FR in Moss & Brents and you could argue we haven't missed a beat. Moss got picked on during his 1st start, but when you are targeted 17 times, good chance they are going to complete some passes. If someone said by game 4, we would be starting 2 TR FR at CB, there would have been a meltdown on this board...
Waiting in the wings Johnson (highly rated recruit who if not injured, may be playing too), Creamer & Turner as well as Craddieth at S.
Hooker is playing at an All B10 level and Stone is a really good back-up. Would like to see him play more. Then there is Castro and Belton coming who were targeted early and have their commits.
Today, the D allowed 114 yards, which is different from our Bend, Don't Break where we give up yards between the 20s and then clamp down.
What Parker is doing is amazing and should be considered for Coordinator of the Year.
