Old (almost) Friend update

It's interesting that he has seemed to regress each season. His career high points, assists, and steals all are from his freshman season. He is scoring efficiently and appears to still be a pretty good player, but maybe losing him wasn't as big of a miss as we all originally thought.

Maybe he would have become a better player with Fran and Company coaching him up. We/he will never know.

Really short...not super athletic. I think Fran was just trying to make impact in recruiting and get someone. The ones Iowa really missed on were guys like Niang and Morris of ISU, and Ulis to kentucky. Landing Uthoff on the rebound from the Grinch was the greatest recruiting victory, I'll take Uthoff over Ulis.

Good post & question. I don't think there is any question the kid would have been better off as all we need to do is look at the guys currently on the team & prior...their improvement. Not only does Fran know talent & recruits it ... he knows how to develop it. Something about the proof is in the pudding.

I also think Fran does a great job with knowing when to rattle someone's chain and to make sure the player understands why. Fran (and staff) took a talent like Peter Jok ... who is now playing at an elite level (per Fran).

I wouldn't call Ulis a miss. I see a miss as someone who you choose someone else over. Or just not recruiting them at all when they're in your backyard. Fran couldn't of done anything more to get Ulis.

You are correct.
Yep. I recall being very excited about him and thinking he was a lock and would be the start of the turnaround in recruiting. Seems we are just fine without him but sill think he would've been a nice get.

Speaking of old friends... I tried to start a thread on this but apparently that doesn't happen from the app. I turned on the Houston/SMU game last night to see if SMU is legit (I don't think they are). Got there just in time to watch a Kyle Meyer monster jam. Haven't followed him closely at all but looks like he is starting. Dot know what his role would've been for this team but he definitely had a decent skill set for his size.

I was also going to post about Kyle Meyer. He is now starting for a decent team in Houston. Does not play a whole lot of minutes. Played well at JC last year.

Meyer was/is skilled. Apparently wouldn't wait his turn and didn't want to do what the coaches wanted him to do....play/perform his role on the team.

Looks like he played his best game of the year last night 7 pts, 7 rebs in 21 mins against a good SMU team.

I remember this kid. Really wanted him to choose us but he went to OK St. Can't really blame him for that, they have a good school and top of the line facilities. The students chanted his name and he appreciated the love they gave him, just wasn't meant to be. Good to see him doing well again. As far as Meyer goes, it's good to see him get some PT but he would've always been a little used reserve here. It was better for him to move on.
Someone said Ulis wasn't a miss and I'm starting to agree with that. Yes, it would've been a great recruiting victory for Fran but I wouldn't trade where we are as a team right now to be Kentucky. This is the beginning of a golden age in Iowa basketball, in my humble opinion. Ulis isn't all that for Kentucky although he is a talented player. I just love our coach and squad right now.

Something like that, yes. "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." It's something of a personal campaign to teach people the correct phrase.

Totally agreed on the second paragraph. He's a great reader of his players and understands how to draw out the right response. That goes for individuals and the team. The only time I can recall he wasn't able to maximize this intangible was the meltdown of 2013.
