Sorry that I can't remember all that went into the number of weight categories. But....weren't the number of them were reduced? Well, I don't get it. Why is it healthy to have probably the same number of prospective Olympic wrestlers trying to fit into a reduced number of weight categories? Some probably doing unhealthy things to lose weight. . Just wondering what the Olympics committee was thinking, and, oh yeah, glad wrestling still in the Olympics.

Yes...reduced them to add women weights. More PC and appeal to keep wrestling since it was a man's sport.

Back when Wrestling was on the chopping block for Rio the International Olympic Committee stated that one of the reasons for potential elimination was that (in addition to a boring product and gross mismanagement) it awarded medals at about a 2:1 ratio for Men to Women (largely because Greco/Roman has only male competitors). One of the IOC's stated goals has been to move toward parity in awarding medals working within a set number of overall awards. To that end UWW (previously FILA) reduced men's weight classes and reformed the rules to make a better product. I'm sure that no one is really happy about the reduction in weight classes, but that's what Wrestling needed to do in order to stay in the games so that's what was done.

No offense to Sam Stoll, Robby Smith, and Adam Coon and those guys, but I'd be
A OK if they ditched Greco and added a couple of more weight classes in Freestyle Mens. 6 is just not enough. We're gonna leave so much talent at home this year along with other countries.
