so they’ll finish 1-1 vs Australia and 0-1 vs Nigeria. Cool.
Nope, they'll finish 1-0 vs Australia and not having played Nigeria.
Gm1 vs France: L 76-83
Gm2 vs Iran: W 120-66
Gm3 vs Czech Republic: W 119-84
Gm4 vs Spain: W 95-81
Gm5 vs Australia: W 97-78
Gold Medal game vs France: ???

Any more questions?

Do you talk about pre-season NFL games during the playoffs?

Still afraid to bet against them, aren’t you?
No because nfl preseason is used to figure out who’s making the team.

I would bet they’d win, but that doesn’t change the fact the current program isn’t what it should be.

So they won the games in Vegas, got it.

Too much look at me I’m fast and can cruise to the finals. Then not ready for finals.
Now that we've been shut out of the medal stand completely in the Men's 400 (another event we dominated for many years but by the time Paris rolls around will not have had an American man atop the podium for 16 years)...as mentioned previously, the only way to avoid this being the first Olympics ever (not counting 1980) where no American man wins individual running gold is the following:
  • 1500M - Rio Gold medalist Matthew Centrowitz competes (Prior to 2016 the US last won in 1908!)
  • 5000M - Rio Silver medalist Paul Chelimo competes (US has not won gold since 1964)
  • Marathon - Rio Bronze medalist Galen Rupp competes (US has not won gold since 1972)
Let's just say form holds, and we fail to win the aforementioned races. At that point, not only are we faced with the reality of an Olympics without a single individual American male running gold medalist, but if the 4x400 team doesn't find a way to win, we would exit these games without a single men's running gold medal of ANY kind.

Frankly, regardless of the outcome of the three events above (and of course we all hope for a US sweep), this simply has to be looked back upon as the single worst showing by US male runners in Olympic history. Not a national tragedy in the grand scheme of things, of course. But definitely an athletic failure and embarrassment of monumental proportions given our pedigree and 100+ year legacy of success.

that may be a bit dramatic. Holloway and Bromell are inexcusable, but otherwise who disappointed? We can act mad about the 4x100, but bungling the handoff is a US tradition. Good showing in the 200, good showing in the 400 hurdles, a 17 yr old who is a top 4 sprinter in the world.

I would bet they’d win, but that doesn’t change the fact the current program isn’t what it should be.

Nearly half the current US Men's team wasn't on the roster in Las Vegas. So no, this team hasn't lost 3 games. The lost one game in which 5 of their players had been with the team less than a week and 3 had never practiced with them and, literally, went from the US straight to the game.

Now, all of that is a major issue. But you are taking it out on the team. This isn't a player issue, it's a USA Basketball process and leadership issue. Put these same players together, give them a full month of practice before their 1st exhibition game, they fly through the Olympics undefeated, and likely not pushed hard.

If an NFL or NBA team rolled into their first game of the season with 2 weeks of prep and half a roster different than started those two weeks, we wouldn't be blaming the players for losing their first game (and they would). We'd be blaming the coaches and, much more, the front office.

And I’ve said the process is why we struggle.

In the past four Olympics, US Men have won a grand total of 6 gold medals in the running events anyone tuning into Track and Field once every 4 years really gives a damn about (100, 200, 400, 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles, 4x1, 4x4). And only four of those gold medals were in individual events. Four. In four full Olympics. That's dismal. US Track and Field is not measured by "coming close" or "being in the top 4" or finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th. It's gold or bust....and we've been bust an awful lot over the past 13 years.

The exhibition games are to figure out who will be on the court together and the best groups they can construct.

It's practice.
We're talking 'bout practice.
Not a game. Not a game.
Practice.

I would contend your perceptions of the current gulf between USA and international basketball isn't what it should be. You're living 30 years in the past.

I would contend USA basketball shouldn’t assume they slap a group together and expect them to waltz through the tournament.

30.5 average margin of vicotry on the way to the gold medal game...Maybe we need to be asking you what you expect team USA to do. Sounds like your expecations are not realistic.

Beating Iran and Czech Republic by 50 doesn’t move the needle much. That’s what they’re supposed to do.

So what do you want them to do? Theyve crushed the lower tier teams, theyve beaten top tier teams by 14 and 19, and theyre playing for the gold medal.

You dont even know what you're upset about.

Good for him and the US, but when the best climber in the world didn't get a medal it makes you wonder if the competition is designed correctly.
What would "correctly" look like? If you mean to say that it doesn't look much like rock climbing, well you have a point. But actual rock climbing as a competition would be difficult to determine a winner and it would be exceedingly dangerous. So, they tried to break it down to individual skills and go that way. It might not be rock climbing (which is why it is called sport climbing), but it is an event that can trace its roots to rock climbing. The best "climbers" will need to adapt to the new sport if that's the path they choose to take.

Remember when USA mens basketball just dominated the Olympics? This team ****ing sucks.
And I’ve said the process is why we struggle.
4 straight gold medals, this time with a roster missing many of the big stars and with very limited practice time with whole team. I wish the men's hockey and soccer teams could suck/struggle like that more often

Anyone watching this Japanese reliever with the rosin ball? He goes to the bag every pitch, it's like a poof of smoke at his release point. Shouldn't be legal
