I heard that on the radio this morning, and it's stuck with me. How crazy was it to have a 44 year old man throwing heat and no hitting a decent Blue Jays team? Ryan struck out every starting Blue Jay position player in that game.

Nolan Ryan was one tough customer.
His fast ball had some wiggle to it.
He was a strong and sturdy athlete
who put Robin Ventura in a headlock
when he charged the mound.

He still lives down in Alvin, TX (about 20 miles south of me) on a cattle ranch. I know people that live in Alvin that run into him. He and his son are no longer connected with the Astros...but that's due to Jim Crane (the owner) placing his son in a management position above Reid Ryan -- so Reid left and Nolan got red assed and left.

I watched him pitch at the astrodome once. I didn’t know he was going to pitch, and while I watched warmups I thought there was something about the astrodome that made pitches look faster, because the difference between him and any other pitcher I’d seen was noticeable even from the bleachers. Then I heard the lineups announced.

I almost saw his 8th.
In Arlington for business. Hot night, playing blue jays (again). I sat first row about 10 seats down the line from first base (corporate seats). You could hear him grunt like tennis players. Carried a perfect game thru 7 until a seeing eye roller up the middle broke it up. I saw him pitch 4-5 times mostly later as i had/have alot of business in dallas and large cities. When he was healthy and loose hitters had little chance.

Another good highlight of Ryan. Doesn't look like he wanted to celebrate anything. :)

Oh, he pitched 10 more years after this!

It's almost 10 AM my time but my coffee hasn't fully kicked in, so I thought this was a haiku at first.

I'll take a stab at one:

L. Nolan Ryan
Threw the heat like no other
All-time strikeout king

Nolan Ryan was awesome. A badass on the mound. Baseball would be a better product if there were a lot more like him pitching.
