Something we finally agree on. Baseball only makes themselves look stupid and hypocritical by keeping Rose out of the HOF.

The PED garbage was nothing but a witch hunt. People loved it when Bonds, McGwire and Sosa were gobbling up PED's and hitting 600ft home runs. Everybody knew what is going on, but nobody cared until it was over with.
I don't care either...PED's are all over pro sports. Jim Bouton and Dave Megessey documented them in their books. Heck even Willie Mays drank some sort of performance enhancing jungle juice when he played. That isn't my point...

Pete Rose is a con-artist who has never stopped the charade
that he is a changed man. He recently wrote a book in which
he admitted betting on baseball games that he played in and
managed. He never got professional help for his gambling
addiction. Players and managers betting on games in which
they are participating is forbidden by MLB.

I don't think it's so much the gambling as it is the lying to Major League Baseball for decades. Had he immediately come clean, apologized, and asked forgiveness, he would already be in the Hall of Fame.

I'm not that big into baseball but a couple guys I run with are and here are some theories floating out there.

1. MLB knows how bad this makes them look but to let Rose in at this point raises even more stink concerning "why now" plus it sets a definite benchmark of time. They could then face the issue of trying to explain why you denied Rose for X number of years and Joe Blow for only Y number of years for doing Z offense. Putting him in now could actually make them look worse.

2. This one I really like. MLB is afraid if they induct Rose now he might tell them to go F**K OFF. I actually could see that happening since offering to induct him proves to the world he had the skills and merit to belong yet in the end he could "burn" the institution that "burned" him. This same theory contends it would be safer to wait till his death and then induct him since his family would not be as likely spit in their face as Pete.

His admission that he is still gambling on pro sports, including baseball, certainly didn't help.

The rule is very clear, sorry but F Rose.

Pete Rose avoided Federal persecution by agreeing to take the ban. Manfred shouldn't change the terms Pete agreed to with Bud Selig.

The hypocrisy is that Pete Rose's gambling never impacted the outcome of a game. He claimed he never once bet against his team as a player or manager and they never were able to prove that he did.

What they have proven is that players have taken PEDs (and still are..especially those doing "off season training" in the Dominican Republic where PEDs are legal) and PEDs have impacted the outcome of games. The impact has not only been by increased performance by the athletes but also just the opposite in the suspensions issued to players who are caught. Double edge sword. PEDs have both helped teams/players AND hurt teams/players yet those players are dealt with less harshly than a man who broke the rules but impacted no actual games.

F Rose? Maybe. F MLB? Absolutely.

Gambling means that sometimes you're going to have to throw the game and lose.

PEDs means that they were always trying to win.

Also can you just take Pete Rose for his word? He's been lying his whole career, why would he start telling the truth now?

Proof? Evidence? If Rose is lying prove it. They have tried to prove Rose bet against his teams and they have never been able to do that. If you apply your logic Rose was betting in his team to win.

Hard Proof and Evidence of PED usage exists.

As already stated....just because the athletes TRIED to win by taking PEDs their teams (and fans) have actually been negatively impacted by the suspensions levied on those caught.

The real con-artist is MLB. MLB gained nothing from Roses gambling BUT they $ure have gained a lot from all PED abuse they allowed, especially all the monster home runs and players chasing home run records which put fan$ in the $eats.

What they were able to prove is that he bet on some MLB games, and on his team, on some games but not others. From a mathematical perspective, that's the same thng as betting against his team. Period. Full stop.

Personally, I think his penalty should be you are eligible for the HOF the year after you die. But let's be honest, if the day after he was busted, he admitted guilt, never bet on pro sports, and worked with young kids to reduce sports betting, he would be in the HOF 10 years ago, But he ain't that SMRT.

I don't understand why his defenders always fall back on the PEDs. What does that have to do with Rose breaking the rules on gambling in baseball? Also, is there any players that were caught using PEDs in the hall of fame?

Rose can not be allowed to return to baseball until he takes full responsibility for what he did and renounces gambling. That was the deal HE made. And he's still gambling...on baseball.

No sympathy. Put him in after he's dead.
