One person died after being pulled from under the ice of Lake Macbride in rural Solon Saturday morning.

A passerby on a walking trail near the main boat ramp at Lake Macbride State Park called 911 at 8:50 a.m. Saturday after noticing a pair of gloves near broken ice on the frozen lake, according to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency responders who arrived on scene “were able to observe a body in the lake,” the release states. Members of the Solon Fire Department, dressed in ice rescue suits, pulled the person from the water.

The person was transported by ambulance to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, but they did not survive, the release states. Officials said they did not know how long the person was under water.

The identity of the person has not been released.

The incident is being investigated by the Johnson County Sheriff’s office. It was assisted by the Solon and North Liberty fire departments, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Johnson County Metro Dive Team, Johnson County Emergency Management, Johnson County Ambulance, UI Med 1 EMS physicians and the Johnson County Medical Examiner.

It's pretty avoidable. Don't go out on lakes in winter. I feel bad because someone died. But, don't go out on ice if there are any doubts about the ice.
And obviously they were alone which just adds to the stupidity.

Accidents happen for sure but this one seems to be 100% avoidable.

A Cedar Rapids man was identified Monday by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office as the person who died over the weekend after being pulled from icy Lake Macbride.

Jack Peacock, 85, was removed from the lake by members of the Solon Fire Department after a passerby noticed a pair of gloves on the lake next to broken ice and called 911, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Officials don’t know how long Peacock was under water. He was taken by ambulance to University of Iowa Health Care, but he did not survive.

An obituary for Peacock by Murdoch Funeral Homes and Cremation Service states that he was fishing Saturday when he died.

“From a young age, Jack developed a love for hunting and fishing. Later in life, he started golfing. He fell in love with the sport and all the many relationships and friends that he made through the years while golfing,” the obituary reads. “The family would like everyone to find inspiration in Jack’s love of life and the great outdoors and find comfort in knowing he died doing something he loved.”
