I heard this story on NPR yesterday. I have a lot of memories of pulling off of an interstate on long family trips to eat at a HoJo's. An absolutely iconic chain that is just about gone. It was highly recognizable, and the food was predictably good at every restaurant. 28 flavors of ice cream at every restaurant was a nice draw.

Great food and I forgot about the 28 flavors of ice cream.

I also sorely miss Stuckeys, free ice water and with a fill up you could get a pecan roll for 99 cents American.

That's what I was thinking. It closed as a HoJo's a long time ago.

The Howard Johnson Motels were a big deal
in the 1950's and 60's.. Then came Super 8
and Motel 6......Then came Hampton Inn

Fun fact. HoJo was one of my coaches at fantasy camp this year.
