Open Mat Article re: MFS World and Olympic Teams

Good article. I think this shows how well some teams develop top international guys and some don't. Iowa and Ohio state are clearly the best freestyle programs. Personally I put Nebraska just below those two but they could easily be in the same tier depending on whether you view Burroughs as an outlier.

Oklahoma St and Penn State just don't seem to be on the same level at this time. Penn St might have the guys to make it to the next level but I think Zain and Hall are the only ones who have the tools to make multiple teams. I think Nolf and Nickal may find themselves in a similar situation as Taylor. OSU doesn't have the guys so they will continue to be a lower tier freestyle program.

I read the article and still can't figure out what MFS stands for. "Men's Freestyle ....?"

Yeah, I think MFS = Men's Freestyle.

Iowa does pretty well for last 10 years - the best, by # qualifiers.

Regarding Olympic wrestling, according to Intermat, they cut the # of wrestlers participating by 56 for 2020 compared to 2016. Weightlifting, swimming, track and field, and shooting all lost slots as well.

Apparently they need to make room for some new Olympic "sports" - BMX freestyle cycling and 3-on-3 basketball.

I especially enjoy reading ancient Greek history. Some of my favorite historical accounts have to do with how the ancient Greeks used to do BMX freestyle in their togas. In addition, there were some epic 3-on-3 hoops contests among some of those folks. It's a little-known fact that Aristotle had some serious handle on the basketball court. Dude had a wicked cross-over dribble.

Ha ha... BMX in togas. Too bad they didn't have photography back then.

Also, not many people are aware....Aristotle broke Plato's record for 3 pointers.

Would not have guessed OU would be #1. I suppose the Schultz brothers had a lot to do with that.

The Schultz brothers account for 10 of OU's medals. Dave accounts for 7 medals for both OU and Oklahoma State (again, counting both schools in the medal totals for transfers).

How many fewer wrestlers per weight does that mean?

???????? I counted 14 medals for Iowa State [Varner -2, Cael -2, Gable - 2, Ben Peterson - 3, KJ - 3, Glenn Brand - 1, Nate Carr - 1)

At World's
Varner - 3rd
Cael - 2nd
Gable - 1st
Ben Peterson - 3rd
KJ - 1st x 2
Glenn Brand - 0
Carr - placed 5th, no medal

So i count only 6 world medals.

Olympics though,
Varner - 1st
Cael - 1st
Gable - 1st
Peterson - 1st, 2nd
KJ - 1st
Brand - 1st
Carr - 3rd

So add 8 more medals

No, Iowa has 15 WORLD medals. These totals do not include the Olympics, which Iowa has 24 combined World & Olympic medals.

My post was replying to Cradleking's request about the all-time World medals. I took that to mean World championships only and not the Olympics.

So my numbers are accurate in the sense I was answering the question about World medals.

Fair enough - okay. I just always count the olympics as a world medal because every four years the world championships became the olympics. Do you have access to a combined count so we can bust on Penn State a little today? Thanks.

For full disclosure, records for wrestlers prior to 1932 are a little hard to come by in terms of college participation. If they competed at the NCAA tournament AND were an Olympian/World teamer, I have them logged. There may be a slight degree of error in some of the old timers. Again, these numbers count athletes for both schools they competed. (I did not include Dave Schultz with UCLA since he didn't actually compete for them in competition).

Top 10 World & Olympic Medals (men's freestyle only)
Oklahoma State 32

Indiana State 13
Wisconsin 12
Michigan State 6
Arizona State 5
Portland State 5

I guess I would consider an Olympic medal as a World medal as well. I sorta thought that was a given.....

That's what I'm talking about. Absolute proof that f*** and freestyle wrestling don't mix.

I'm not going to disagree with the premise, because there is (well, kinda wasn't) a World championship during Olympic years, but considering the events have different qualification systems and scoring differences (there is no team championship at the Olympics except a medals table, which isn't how the world are calculated normally), they're statistically different. A world champion is a world champion, but they aren't an Olympic champion, but the Olympic champion can say they're the best in the world, but I'm sure they'd rather be called the Olympic champion.

It's basically just a way to separate the data with two different events that are very similar.
