Radical idea:

That really was an incredibly radical idea.
 
There’s been a proposal out here to change the border between Oregon and Washington from west-east to north-south based on the Cascade Mountains. I’m for it.

I hate Portland and Seattle. And when the big one hits off the coast, I’ll be high and dry.
We are going to Bend this summer. I spent a night there 25 years ago, and then another one 2 years ago. That place has changed a lot. I can't imagine the people of Bend would vote to make it harder on the people that own so much property, and spend so much money there.

I'd like to see the same map overlayed with federal land.
Oregon and Idaho are both over 50% federally controlled.

You’ve got to pay the bills somehow, though. The Lost Coast is a huge money sink in terms of roads and services.

Well, the parts they’re looking to add are that much or more.

Maybe rural living is subsidized with too many services? Or perhaps just too much so in the opinion of the people there?

But unless you're Lincoln in the middle of a war cutting up states isn't easily done.
 
There are a few people around that would like to incorporate this area...so we can have mail delivery, 9-1-1, etc....but then they always get reminded, "If someone is in charge, that means someone is telling us what to do" and reminded that any efforts they make to get it done will be countered.
 
Basically, the big landowners in eastern Oregon and northern California want more autonomy in running their fiefdoms. They're jealous of the free rein given by Idaho's conservatives and don't like being held in check by the state governments of Oregon and California. This is the same bunch that doesn't believe they're getting a good enough deal paying pennies on the dollar to lease federal public lands, and just wants ownership transferred directly to them. Also, Conservative Jesus.
 
They want to rename the state 'Greater Idaho".

More power to them.

If we did that then why would any county not have free reign to separate itself from a state because it doesn't like it's politics.

I mean Northern Indiana probably isn't particularly fond of the politics coming out of Indy so maybe we should just join Michigan and flip Michigan from swing state to reliably blue?

The problem I see is that both kind of need each other. Rural areas need the investment from cities but cities need rural areas (and therefore need to invest in them) because that is often where their resources come from, especially food. Food is cheap so it doesn't by itself bring enough money in, but at the same time any government worth it's salt would invest in keeping food cheap and making sure it's plentiful.

We have to find a way to live together.

Waste of time. State boundaries are what they are, and will never change. Federal government won’t allow it.

They do have that right, every couple years they hold elections in Oregon. They are just mad because unlike the presidency and the senate and the federal judiciary by extension, state elections are decided by a popular vote and they are the minority in that case.

We can't exactly have counties deciding they want to up and pack up from one state and join another or create their own state. That would lead to complete chaos.

Yep. It was only a few years ago when I learned that Ore-Ida stood for Oregon-Idaho. One of those mind blowing moments where you realize that you should have known something all along.
I was just now many years old when I found out. :)

Also, lol at the “DONT TREAD ON ME” folks not realizing they’d lose their rural socialism if they disconnected from the actual GDP supporting population centers. Let the dimwits go and sink into poverty if that’s what they want so bad. At least they’ll have their guns - maybe they can become hunter-gatherer tribes again, lol.
 
They arn't elected by a popular vote that holds to a certain number of people represented by each senator.

State senates are.
What are you talking about? When people run for the senate, the person who gets the most votes wins. Number of people represented has nothing to do with it.
