I live in Columbus. Thad Matta and Gene Smith will hold a joint press conference at 2PM. OSU websites are reporting this will be Thad's last year as coach. Physical issues have really taken its toll on Thad in the last few years. I expect Gene will make the standard statement that it will be an extensive search to find a new coach and to thank Thad for his service to the university.

Thanks for the info. A coaching search would likely include associate head coach Dave Dickerson. Strength being continuity of the program, which is big when a coach is retiring. It would prevent a year's recruiting gap. Weakness would be his results as a head coach at Tulane and the current state of Ohio State, which has been less than stellar.

I'd be tempted to hire the guy if I were Gene Smith. We at Iowa know what a lame duck season did to us and there is never a guarantee any new hire is going to work out.

Selfishly, I'd like OSU to search for awhile. I'm thinking of swooping up 2019 PG Jeremiah Francis, with whom the Iowa staff's already building a relationship, during the coaching transition.

Well, that APPEARS to solve the problem of a lame duck season. But with only eight current guys, one a former walk on, and two freshmen coming in Ohio State is still at just ten players for 2017/18. And that is if the two signed guys can be convinced to stay. To add to the trouble, they have two commits in the 2018 class that will need to be convinced to stay.

They can't afford a long wait to find a coach with so many spots to fill. Especially with 2018 commits just around the corner, many July-September!

It doesn't do much for Iowa, since we are at our limit until apparently 2019. But I imagine other schools are going to be looking at who they can steal away.

The good news for Ohio State is they are still the only Big Ten game in the whole state. With that population, presumably any coach should be able to practically dominate the league if they can just keep instate talent at home. Dayton's coach is now at Indiana, good and bad. Bad for the poaching part as Miller will have an in already with Ohio State's committed guys, good in that maybe Dayton drops a bit with Miller gone? What's that leave, Xavier, Cincinnati?

Ohio State should be a huge attraction for many coaches....but does Dave Dickerson have the draw to keep guys already committed in future plans?

Unfortunate circumstances aren't different (having him closer to college and Iowa having scholarships) - 2019 still has time to wait and see who OSU brings in (then get wowed during the honeymoon period with the new coach).

That blows me away as it seems like he's been at OSU forever and should be in his early 60s

Me too, and frankly makes my fat ass feel a tad better about myself because I'm a few years younger than him and would've guess him to be at least 10 more than me.

Sucks he was one of my favorite big ten coaches.

Damn at 49 and having the healthy issues he is having though, it might be best if he just walks away for a while.

The article I read indicated Smith wanted to go in a different direction, kind of like what Iowa told Dr. Tom. I guess twelve 20 win seasons in 13, 2 Final Fours, 9 NCAA appearances, 2 NIT appearances, 1 NIT championship, 4 regular season Big 10 and 5 Big 10 tournament championships aren't enough! I wonder what direction they want to go? Is Iowa too patient with Fran?

His program at OSU has become irrelevant and is getting close to circling the drain. The only surprise is doing it now instead of after the season.

Fran is doing fine - next question.

Last couple of season's recruits and results have been disappointing, but Matta had tremendous results at Butler, Xavier, and OSU previously. He also seems to be a stand up guy. This might be as much about his health as the AD telling him to leave.

As it mentions in the article, the problem is that many of these candidates are peaking going into next year at their current positions. Bad timing for tOSU.

Yeah, Hawkeye fans definitely don't want any of the top few to take the OSU job.

True, but doesn't change the situation. All the college guys are heading into what could be career years at their schools; not just coming off of them- when they might be ripe to move on. Billy Donovan's probably not in that situation, but would he leave 5mil/year to go to OSU?

Donovan probably makes the most sense. The Thunder aren't likely to be very good in the next few years and OSU is probably willing to make him very happy financially. Would re-unite him with Urban Meyer, when both were successful at Florida.
