With the ball? I missed the game, but on replay it looked real close whether it as a fumble or a TD . But all they talk about is the illegal bat

Yes...It was clearly out before he broke the goal line.

The missed bat is a terrible blown call.

I would say it was a blown call but a badly blown call is a bit much. They never flag anyone for that and he more patted the ball then batted the ball out. If Johnson don't fumble it's a mute point. Never let a ref determine a game for you. He hangs on to the ball it's not a blown call. Not many even knew that rule before they discussed it afterwards with the old official.

How many Super Bowl rings do Lewis, Young and Dilfer have? They didn't realize it because as they said, it's never called.

Illegal forward batting is always called on the defense. The punter Or ofensive player kicking it out of the EZ may or may not be called because either way it's a safety. So the punter play vs last nights play is not apples to apples comparison. In college would that be reviewable? If so, it amazes me how many obviously blown calls in the NFL are by rule not reviewable.

If I'm not mistaken all the defender had to do was make a reasonable attempt to recover it and if his momentum carries him out of end zone before he has posession it not considered illegal bat

Sad part of this controversy is it had nothing to do with the play. The focus should be on Kam's incredible play but the media wants to focus on a rule that most of them didn't even know existed until last night. Also, they make it sound like the Lions win the game if that's called. I saw 60 minutes of football last night that told me the Lions scoring a TD there was hardly probable.

I live out here but not a huge Seahawk fan. I am so glad they didn't call that. The rules and officials have been bailing out bad offenses for 15 years now. Penalties are essentially dragging offenses down the field and almost every penalty and rule is set up to help the offense score points. Thank you NFL for not bailing out another bad offensive play.

It wouldn't be a safety if the defense recovered it. That's why they try to kick it out. So why wouldn't that be illegal?

Maybe it is illegal, but a penalty in the offenses end zone results in a safety anyway

2 points of order.

1. Illegal batting doesn't matter if you punch it into the upper deck or tap it slightly. If you touch the ball and change it's impetus (the official word in all football rulebooks) the ball is dead there. Illegal touching gets called in every game...when you down a punt, that is illegal touching. There is no penalty yards in that case, it just kills the play right there. Illegal batting works the same way, essentially.

2. Illegal batting is only called against the defense for exactly the reason previously stated.
