OT - Nike or Under Armour?

Nike is obviously the official outfitter of Iowa and has been for some time. However, with their deal set to expire next year sometime, maybe Iowa should take a look at Under Armour as their new outfitter for athletics. Take a look at Iowa's current deal with Nike and compare it to Wisconsin's deal with Under Armour. It's not even close.

So to you all, which do you prefer? The question can be applied to footwear, clothing, or both. Me, I'm a big Under Armour guy. I find their athletic and casual apparel very comfortable. Their Threadborne line is awesome.

With Nike being the official supplier for Iowa, I wasn't even aware that Under Armour made some Iowa clothing items as well. I just ordered a few Iowa Under Armour hoodies from the Hawk Shop.

So if it were up to you, which would you choose for Iowa going forward and why? I guess you can throw Adidas into this discussion as well, if there is anybody here who prefers them.

I think we should make a deal with Duluth Trading company. Custom made Buck-Naked Compression shorts, some Dry on the Fly uniforms and some custom Jackpine Trekker cleats. That would be badass! :)

I see custom oregon jordans that the kids can go sell for big $, but Iowa players don't get custom iowa shoes.

UA!

Plus I don't remember the last time I bought something with a swoosh on it....

For this thread to exist, UA then has come a long ways. So has Adiddas for that matter but Nike quality is so much better that this thread probably shouldn't exist yet unless talking strictly financially.

UA in everything but shoes. The shoes look nice but are crap. UA makes a quality clothing product that works better for me in all that I do and is better when tested in the field. I'm not a big Nike fan. Clothing is overpriced and the clothing doesn't hold up. To me its for just wearing around town.

I agree that Nike shoes are better than UA. For me, UA shoes have been hit or miss. I've owned 4-5 pairs through the years, and some have been really comfortable while others were pretty bad. Nike running shoes seem to be much better. However as I mentioned before, I much prefer UA when it comes to clothing. If you haven't tried any of their Threadborne stuff you should give it a try. I have some joggers, sweatshirts, and workout shirts and they're all awesome.

And as their ad sez, "no stink".

Under Armour is gonna go bankrupt.

"Under Armour investors suffered significant losses as a result of what a shareholder's lawsuit called false and misleading statements about the company's prospects.

The sports apparel maker and some of its officers misrepresented the company's sales and growth in a drive to pursue competitors Nike, Reebok and Adidas, according to allegations in a securities fraud class action lawsuit filed Friday in U.S. District Court for Maryland. It represents investors who bought Under Armour's Class A and Class C common stock between April 21, 2016 and Jan. 30.

Defendants, including founder and CEO Kevin A. Plank and former CFO Lawrence P. "Chip" Molloy, "failed to disclose that Under Armour's revenue and profit margins would not be able to withstand the heavy promotions, high inventory levels and ripple effects of numerous department store closures and bankruptcy of The Sports Authority," the lawsuit said.

Under Armour said in a statement it is aware of the claims and find them without merit"

If they didn't have Jordan Spieth under contract, there wouldn't be much there.

I dislike UA very much. They used to make good stuff like ten years ago but I have noticed as they expanded their products that quality fell. Nike on the other hand is pretty consistent and as a bigger guy also has a more true fit.

I want them to switch to Under Armour so I can score some Nike gear at the equipment sale. I still have a Reebok rain coat the players wore on the sidelines.

Nike.

While I like UA workout shirts, their shoes are super ugly. Also, I feel like Nike has more cache with recruits.

I would prefer Nike if it was an even financial scenario.

Couple of thoughts:
  • On the basketball side, I feel like IOWA is branded by 14 yr olds and Nike needs to take ownership of this. The NASCAR fonts and >> effects are dismal. Give me some Script IOWA and three colors - black, white, and IOWA gold and I am set.
  • Nike misses the mark on occasion, but if you have watched UA’s college Uni’s over the years, you know that they have shat the bed a few times. Cheesey and over-the-top are their hallmarks (Maryland).
  • I love Jumpman stuff. Best logo in the sports biz. I feel like it is reserved for the global brands, but would love to join that company.

Under Armour is gonna go bankrupt.

I personally love Under Armour gear, but the company financials don't look good. Adidas has had a nice rebound from what many thought they were gonna go belly up several years back. But between Nike and UA, I'd stick with Nike.

For Ol' Doodle it comes down to several factors, including, of course, the overall quality of the gear. But the determining factor for Doodle here is that Under Armor's founder is an alum, former football player, and huge contributor to Univ. of Maryland athletics. Yes, Nike's founder is an Oregon alum and big donor, as has been well examined over the years. But at the end of the day, only one of those schools is in the Big Ten.....so why would we want to promote Under Armor and by proxy, further enrich the athletic bottom line of one of our conference rivals?

You can argue that its splitting hairs and that it doesn't matter. But if Under Armor declines, or even goes out of business, then Maryland loses by far its biggest benefactor. And at the end of the day, that absolutely does matter in the arms race of modern college athletics.

Sorry Doodle-disagree here. A stronger Maryland is better for the Big Ten in the same vein that a stronger Nebraska is better for the Big Ten or Harbaugh at Michigan. It ups the respect factor for the entire conference.

My thoughts

Nike is the better product but UA is seen by the youth of today to be the "It Brand" right now and the foreseeable future. Take a looks at what most elementary/JR High/ High school kids are wearing. The trend is WAY towards UA right now.

I wouldn't mind seeing us make the switch IF they gave us a deal that was comparable to what NIKE is giving us.
