OT: OSU loses top guard

and another article:
Ohio State made a second-straight early exit from the NCAA Tournament in 2015. Still, there was no reason to panic in Columbus because help was supposed to be on the way.

The Buckeyes signed the nation’s No. 5 recruiting class in 2015, a collection of four-star recruits projected to lead OSU deep into March Madness in the coming years. If some of those guys left school early, it would be understandable, because they would have gone to the NBA.

Well, things didn’t work out as planned. With the arrest of JaQuan Lyle this weekend–and the subsequent news he quit the program last month anyway–all five signees from that 2015 haul are gone. None are in the pros.

  • Four-star shooting guard JaQuan Lyle – quit OSU in April
  • Four-star power forward Daniel Giddens – transferred to Alabama
  • Four-star shooting guard Austin Grandstaff- transferred to Oklahoma, now at DePaul
  • Four-star point guard A.J. Harris – transferred to New Mexico State
  • Four-star small forward Mickey Mitchell – transferred to Cal-Santa Barbara, now at Arizona State
Matta may be gone sooner than later??

This will be Mattas last season. He'd be gone already had it not been for his earlier success at OSU.

Coach Matta has been looking pretty bleak the last couple of seasons. Dealing with those prima donnas and suffering with his back issues is prematurally aging him. There's something to be said to be able to congregate a group of underappreciated, hungry 3-stars. These kids rarely engender a negative attitude.

Wow what a cluster f*** that 2015 class became
The Columbus Dispatch notes that the roster is down to just 8 players, including 2 in coming freshman. Apparently, the Buckeyes are after a "handful" of graduate-transfers to fill out the roster. Hardly the path to sustained success. After several years of great results at three different colleges, Matta is really struggling and you have got to question how long he plans on sticking around. His health, a significant foot problem, must be a factor. He was known to be a "player's coach", which makes all the transfers hard to understand. OSU's demand for win-lose success will not allow much more time for Thad.

It becomes easier and easier to see OSU in the bottom third of the league this season. This should be the year they would be reaping the rewards of that 2015 class being Juniors and taking over the team. However, they lost their best post and are forced to rely on more newcomers.

Wow that is amazing. Sometimes with class of that size for bball expect maybe one or 2 flame out or transfer but to lose all 5 that is amazing. Sometimes fans of every school, Iowa included, forget that just because get top or really good recruits don't always translate to success. Some just aren't as good as they are billed, injuries or transfers effect that. But don't tell that to school to the west who think good class automatically means success for bball and school farther west for football think with stars next to players names means they will dominate in the future.

It reminds me of Painter's 2011 class. He whiffed on all of his top targets (Branden Dawson, Chasson Randle, Jonathan Holmes, etc.) and ended up with a two player class (Donnie Hale and Jacob Lawson). Then, both of those guys left (in Hale's case, quit basketball) after just two seasons in the program. That was a total s**t-pickle of a class. Fortunately, the program has recovered.

Yeah, with OSU and Matta it seemed like everything started getting worse all at once (health issues, dive in recruiting success, then assistant Jeff Boals left prior to this past season). Well, he had a good run from '05-'06 through '14-'15.

Reminds me of the class with Alford that sent things going down hill for Iowa bball. Forget the year but guys we had were-
JR Angle- committed as frosh/soph in HS out of Indiana and never became the shooter we thought he'd be. Barely played even during Lick era.
Seth Gorney- Big 7 footer who became a marginal player while here
Alex Thompson- Hit big 3 in big 10 tourney title game his lone bright spot. Transfer to ISU where he did little to nothing.
Carlton Reed- Showed promise but injuries nagged him. Believe ended up at UNI before he quit due to injuries.

2004 class for Iowa

OSU definitely needs a reboot in CBB. They have not looked good the last couple of years. They look uninspired and seem to give up when things don't go their way. Look for OSU to court some awesome replacement for Matta next year.
