What makes this run that much more impressive is that the bulk of these Utah teams would love to have the recruiting classes Iowa gets.

Now that they're a P5 team, that's probably a non-issue. They do a pretty good job of recruiting California and the Pacific (most Western teams have at least a handful of Polynesian kids).

I seem to recall a few years back Kirk met with Winningham and discussed bowl prep and how Utah does things. For some reason I remember reading that somewhere. I could be wrong though.

Laid an egg against Boise State, what gives?
Boise State was 12-1 that year, and also 12-1 the next year with win over Georgia to start 2011.
I think one thing in Utah's favor is most of these bowls were in the West where they are located. They don't have to adjust time wise or weather wise.
I also think many opponents have trouble taking Utah seriously, not realizing they get very good athletes from the west coast.

Also, look at the dates of those bowls. That indicates that even though brand name on jersey, they had down years generally since they finished well down conference bowl lineup.
What has hurt Iowa is getting "Better Bowls" and tougher opponents.
On average, Iowa plays teams ranked 2-3 spots higher in their conference than Iowa does in a given year.
They still came out and played which is great. But even that Alabama win was without suspended LT and Alabama complaining be in that game.

G5 teams "play down". B1G teams "play up".

That doesn't explain the entirety of the records, but it is a large factor.
