OT, why is there a slide rule for the QBs?

Could a RB or WR slide feet first and the same protections occur? They’re a football player. If you run out of the pocket all bets are off. Let the defense play. So many targeting penalties against defensive players timing a tackle that ends up being a low hit on a slider.

it adds penalty yards which can lengthen drives and turn into more points

anyone who says these penalties aren't about creating more points is clueless :)

Any player who gives themself up (slides) is protected. Not just the QB.

If a QB runs out of the pocket they become a runner/ball carrier, the same as a RB or WR. No difference.

Interesting. Seems silly.

What is silly is asking this question on a college football forum. You're down by rule in college football if your knee or any other qualifying body part is down regardless of contact.

NFL rule is different.

You can still "give yourself up" in the NFL as well .. ref will blow the whistle dead

The rule was created in the NFL partially to limit qb hits but also to give the offense a chance to get down with time running out to set up a field goal or another play.
