STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford split a pair of duals Thursday, defeating California Batist, 36-7, before being edged by North Dakota State, 18-17.

Stanford, which is tied with the Bison in the InterMat Tournament rankings at No. 20, moves to 2-3 on the season. The Cardinal won eight of 10 bouts against the Lancers, and five versus North Dakota State.

Four Cardinal won twice on Thursday - Jaden Abas, Jackson DiSario, Tyler Eischens and Jason Miranda. Abas turned in a pair of major decisions, topping CBU's Marcus Peterson, 15-4, before knocking off No. 16 Kellyn March of North Dakota State, 14-5. Ranked No. 22 at 149 pounds, Abas is now 17-3 on the season and 4-1 in duals.

Miranda upset No. 20 Dylan Droegemueller of North Dakota State, 9-6, scoring a reversal late in the third period to seal the win. The junior opened the day with a fall in 2:18 over California Baptist's Christian Nunez. He is now 11-5 overall and 3-2 in duals.

Ranked 27th nationally at 174 pounds, Eischens shut down CBU's Louis Rojas with a 15-0 technical fall in 3:38. He followed up with a 9-6 decision over North Dakota State's Gaven Sax. The redshirt senior now boasts a season record of 15-4 and is 4-1 in duals.

DiSario did not give up a point for the Cardinal at 133 pounds. He registered a 7-0 decision over CBU's Hunter Leake and a 9-0 major decision against NDSU's McGwire Midkiff. He is 12-6 on the year.

After defeating CBU's Frank Almaguer 6-1, No. 2 Shane Griffith suffered his first loss of the season, dropping a 6-3 decision to No. 15 Michael Caliendo of North Dakota State. The two previously met 10 days ago in the finals at the Southern Scuffle. The loss was just the seventh of Griffith's career.as he is now 16-1 on the season.

Stanford 157-pounder Charlie Darracott and 19-7-pounder Nick Stemmet each recorded a fall against the Lancers, while heavyweight Peter Ming earned a decision.

True freshman Nico Provo, ranked No. 15 at 125 pounds, bounced back after a loss to California Baptist with a gritty 10-6 win over NDSU's Ryan Henningson. Provo sits at 15-4 and 3-2 in duals this season.

Stanford closes out the week on Sunday, hosting Penn at Noon in Maples Pavilion. The dual will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.

Pucino, Braunagel Pins Lead No. 22 Illini Past Boilers, 31-9

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- No. 22 Illinois wrestling won its second straight Big Ten dual with a 31-9 victory over Purdue on Saturday night. Danny Pucino and No. 11 Danny Braunagel executed second-period falls and three other Illini added bonus points, including No. 10 Edmond Ruth's 18th straight victory, as the Illini improved to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in conference.
In addition to the two pins, the Illini were tough on top up and down the lineup tonight, tallying 12 minutes, 26 seconds of combined ride time across the five victories that didn't end in a fall. 174-pounder Dylan Connell led the team with 3:44 of ride time, besting Zac Braunagel's 3:23 at 184 pounds.
For the second match in a row, sophomore Danny Pucino fired up the State Farm Center crowd with a pin, this time upsetting Purdue's 12th-ranked 141 pounder. After Pucino and #12 Parker Filius fought through a scoreless first period, Pucino put the Boilermaker on his back fewer than 30 seconds into the second period and finished the pin at 3:35.
Not to be outdone, No. 11 Danny Braunagel added a pin of his own at 165 pounds. After giving up a quick takedown to start the match, Braunagel escaped and got to his offense with a takedown and rode out Stoney Buell to finish the opening period. Like Pucino, Braunagel was able to get his opponent to succumb early in the second period, as Danny earned the six points with the fall 62 seconds into the second period.
In addition to the two pins, the Illini earned bonus points at 133-, 149-, 174- and 197-pounds. No. 10 Lucas Byrd used five takedowns and a reversal en route to a 13-4 major decision, while Jake Harrier won by eight points (10-2) with three takedowns and a two-point near fall at 149 pounds.
After Danny Braunagel's pin at 165, No. 10 Ruth led from start to finish on his way to a 12-4 major decision (1:39 ride time) for his 18th straight victory and 20th overall this season. Following a steady 9-2 decision from Dylan Connell at 184 pounds paced by nearly four minutes of ride time, #12 Zac Braunagel continued Illinois' dominance on top with over three minutes of riding time of his own and four near-fall points en route to a 19-6 major decision.

OREM, Utah – No. 3 Iowa State (10-2, 3-0 Big 12) won its 14th consecutive Big 12 dual with a 31-9 victory over Utah Valley (1-5, 1-2 Big 12) Saturday night inside Lockhart Arena.

Four of ISU's seven wins came with bonus points, including three falls. Zach Redding, David Carr and Marcus Coleman all registered first-period pins.

Redding got Iowa State on the board at 133 pounds with a fall against Kobe Nelms in 2:34. Redding used a chicken wing to turn Nelms and settled in for the pin to put the Cyclones in front, 6-3, after two matches.

At 149 pounds, No. 7 Paniro Johnson picked up a 5-2 victory over Isaiah Delgado thanks to a pair of first-period takedowns.

Jason Kraisser kept Cyclone fans on the edge of their seats as usual in the 157-pound bout. The senior used a strong third-period ride to erase riding time and secured a takedown in sudden victory to down Tyson Humpherys, 4-2.

Carr didn't mess around against Danny Snediker, picking up the fall in 1:03, the Cyclone's fastest of the season. Two matches later, Coleman locked up a cradle on the edge of the mat for a quick pin against Hunter Morse in 1:12.

In the only bout of the night between two ranked wrestlers, No. 5 Yonger Bastida squared off against No. 23 Evan Bockman at 197 pounds. Bastida used a takedown in the first and second periods, as well as an escape in the third, to grab a 5-3 victory over Bockman.

Sam Schuyler closed out the dual with a 12-3 major decision against Chase Trussell. Schuyler had five takedowns in the win, including two in the final minute of the match, to secure the major.

Diakomihalis Wins 100th, Bonus Points Push Cornell Past #20 Lehigh

Story Links

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell senior Yianni Diakomihalis won his 100th career match and bonus points allowed the sixth-ranked Big Red to top No. 20 Lehigh 18-15 on Saturday evening at a sold-out Friedman Wrestling Center. The Big Red improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Mountain Hawks slipped to 4-6.

Diakomihalis dominated from the start against Drew Munch, with his escape seconds into the third period ending the match after securing three takedowns, two full sets of back points and an escape over the first two periods to build a 15-1 lead. The victory makes him the 26th wrestler in school history to reach that milestone, and his 100-2 record (.980) is just short of Dave Auble's mark (51-1, .981). His two bonus points allowed Cornell some breathing room as it won four of the first five matches to take a 15-3 edge into intermission.

While neither team had a full lineup, Cornell did not wrestle four starters

Two key wins for the Big Red came by way of Cole Handlovic at 157, knocking off 25th-ranked 149-pounder Max Brignola by a 2-0 margin, and 125-pounder Brett Ungar's overtime victory over Jaret Lane. Those two wins ultimately allowed Cornell to snap its three-game skid against its EIWA rival.

Cornell also earned wins from a pair of top 10 wrestlers, with seventh-ranked Julian Ramirez earning a major decision victory at 165, and fourth-ranked Chris Foca knocking off Jake Logan 9-5 at 174.

The dual win was the fourth of the year over a ranked foe and was the last lead-in to Ivy competition. The Big Red will hit the road to face Brown (12 p.m.) and Harvard (6 p.m.) on Saturday, Jan. 21. The contests will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

The 26th-ranked Sooners capped off their trip to the Virginia Duals with two dominant wins over Ohio and Navy on Saturday.

In OU's first matchup of the double-header, the Sooners prevailed over Ohio (2-5) 33-6 after winning the first eight bouts.

At 125, No. 10 Joey Prata only needed an escape in the second period to claim a 1-0 decision victory and bid OU (6-3) the early lead, 3-0.

Oklahoma then went on a winning spree, starting with No. 30 Wyatt Henson strolling past Mason Brugh 15-3 to notch his sixth major decision as a Sooner. No. 30 Mosha Schwartz (141) carried the momentum with a 4-3 decision, followed by No. 13 Mitch Moore (149) with a 1-0 decision.

A medical forfeit by Ohio's Daniel Segura bidded Jared Hill the win in the 157-pound bout. Following Jared's win, No. 16 Gerrit Nijenhuis came out victorious after a low-scoring battle ending in his favor, 3-2.

At 174, Tate Picklo comfortably won after picking up a 4-point near fall in the third period to secure the 21-5 win by tech fall.

With losses at 184 and 197, Heindselman re-established the Sooners' momentum with a pin over Jacob Padilla at the 1:37 mark. His pin solidified OU's momentous victory over the Bobcats, 27-6.

In the final dual of the Virginia Duals, the Sooners strolled past Navy (1-4), 28-12, after winning the first six matches.

Prata jumped ahead early with a takedown in the first period, and increased his early advantage to a 4-0 shutout win over Navy's Grant Treaster. Henson followed up by breaking a 3-3 tie with a riding time point at the end of the 133-pound bout.

Topping off an undefeated record at the Virginia Duals, Schwartz knocked off No. 14 Josh Koderhandt after pinning him in just 1:34 of the 165-pound bout. He finished 4-0 this weekend and increased his season record to 11-2, including four falls.

At 149, Mitch won by medical forfeit, followed by Jared Hill driving past Chase Caprella by a 14-1 major decision. Hill compiled three wins in his starting debut this weekend.

In his first collegiate start, Alejandro Herrera-Rondon snapped a 4-4 tie by taking down Val Park with seconds remaining in overtime. Heindselman concluded the contest with a three overtime thriller victory that came with a riding time point securing the 2-1 win.

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Jan. 14, 2023) – The Cowboys hosted their first home dual of the season on Saturday night welcoming No. 7 Missouri to the UniWyo for a Big 12 matchup. Wyoming won three matches on the night and True Freshman Jore Volk picked up a top 15 win, but Missouri took the dual 28-10.

"That was a great win for Jore and he really got the crowd into the dual. I think he's still trying to figure out some of the adjustments of the college level but he had some really great moments and he kept the pressure on that kid the entire time and it was a great way to start the dual." Head Wrestling Coach Mark Branch said, "I'm proud of our fight tonight and I think we were able to see that we have the potential to be a better team and these guys have potential to be better individuals."

The highlight of the night came at 125 Pounds where No. 27 Volk faced off against Missouri's No. 12 ranked Noah Surtin. Volk set the tone of the match with a takedown late in the first period and followed it with near fall points to take a 4-0 lead. From there Volk stayed in control of the match holding of Surtin's attacks and tacking on another take down and nearfall to cruise to a 11-1 major decision. For Volk, it is the first ranked win of his career as he improves to 13-6 on the season.

At 141 pounds, Job Greenwood put his offense on full display against Missouri's Kade Moore. Greenwood scored quick with a take down and four points of near fall in the first period and never looked back. He added two more takedowns and a reversal to down Moore 11-4 for his seventh win of the season.

Terren Swartz capped off the night on a high note for the Pokes in his heavyweight battle against Missouri's Ryan Boersma. Swartz had the move of the match in the first period hitting a big double leg on Boersma for a takedown and followed it up by riding out the rest of the period. From there the two grapplers traded escapes but Swartz shut down his opponent's attacks and grinded out a 3-1 victory for his first dual win of the season.

A trio of extra matches were contested after the completion of the dual and Garrett Ricks came away with a win at 125 pounds defeating Missouri's Preston Spray 5-3 with a last second take down.

Up next for the Cowboys will be a Big 12 road trip up north as they travel Fargo, North Dakota to face North Dakota State on Saturday Jan. 21 and follow that up with trip to Brookings, South Dakota to dual South Dakota State the next day, Sunday Jan. 22.

I’m a little surprised at Paddy Gallaghers mixed bag of results so far this year. I was a little disappointed when he went to Ohio st, I genuinely thought he would be a hammer for us. Not sure if he’s injured or not, but I wouldn’t say he’s performed up to expectations yet.
