MADISON, Wis. - No. 13 Wisconsin took down No. 24 Purdue 28-9 at the UW Field House on Friday. Garrett Model and Joseph Zargo headlined the B1G dual with two major upsets.

The Badgers started off slow, losing their first two matches and putting themselves in a 6-0 hole, but then went on to win seven of the next eight bouts, including a pin by Dean Hamiti and tech falls by Austin Gomez and Braxton Amos.

The first major upset the Badgers saw was No. 26 Joseph Zargo, who won on a 7-4 decision at 141 pounds, taking down No. 15 Parker Filius. Zargo controlled the match with three takedowns.

Just two matches later No. 18 Garrett Model secured a takedown in the final 15 seconds, beating No. 3 Kendall Coleman at 157. Model was down 3-2 and rallied for the upset victory and brought the crowd to their feet.

Tyler Dow and Trent Hillger also won their respective bouts tonight, both by decision.

Of note, three of Wisconsin's starters against Purdue all hail from the same hometown of Stoughton, Wis. Joining Badgers veterans Model and Dow, Nicolar Rivera earned his first Big Ten dual start at 133 pounds, narrowly losing a 7-3 decision against Dustin Norris in a hard-fought bout.

Full results are below. Wisconsin returns to the UW Field House on Sunday at 2 p.m. to wrestle No. 2 Iowa. The Big Ten dual will be broadcast nationally live on Big Ten Network with Shane Sparks and Jim Gibbons on the call. Fans are also encouraged to bring packages of new socks for the Sock Toss during intermission to help support Wisconsin's community partners in need with new socks.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team won at the bookends, including a Mason Parris decision over top-ranked heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet, but fell to No. 1 Penn State, 30-8, on Friday night (Jan. 20) at the Nittany Lions' Bryce Jordan Center. It was the Wolverines' first dual loss of the season.
Parris, ranked second at heavyweight, avenged three last-season losses to Kerkvliet with a 3-1 decision in the first meeting between the two the year. Tied with an escape and stall warning apiece midway through the third period, Parris spun behind a double-leg half shot to collect the go-ahead takedown and rode out the match to stay unbeaten on the season. He improved 18-0 with his seventh-ranked win -- and third top-10 win -- this season.
Michigan also earned bonus points with Jack Medley's 19-3 technical fall over Gary Steen in the dual's opening bout at 125 pounds. Medley, who debuted at No. 22 in this week's national rankings, scored on five takedowns -- three in the first period -- and eight back points to end the bout at 5:38. He has won each of his last five dual matches this semester.
Penn State claimed eight straight matches in the middle to pull away, including back-to-back overtime decisions at 157 and 165 pounds.
Will Lewan, ranked 10th at 157 pounds, appeared inches away from finishing on a sudden-victory single-leg shot and an extended ensuing scramble against 17th-ranked Levi Haines before allowing a reattack single for the deciding takedown moments later in a 3-1 defeat.
Cameron Amine, ranked fifth at 165 pounds, suffered his first dual loss of the season to 16th-ranked Alex Facundo, 5-5 on 14 seconds of riding time in the tiebreaker. Amine trailed late in regulation after a first-period PSU takedown but scored on a rear-standing takedown from a late flurry -- on a coaches' challenge from the Michigan corner. Action restarted with 20 seconds left and Facundo escaped to force overtime.
Michigan also dropped decisions at 133 and 141 pounds. Dylan Ragusin, ranked 12th nationally at the former weight class, scored the first takedown against top-ranked Roman Bravo Young with a counter takedown on the edge in the last 10 seconds in the first period but fell, 4-2, as the Nittany Lion -- the two-time defending NCAA champion -- earned a takedown of his own in the second and rode out the third. Cole Mattin, ranked 23rd at 141 pounds, dropped a 7-2 decision to fourth-ranked Beau Bartlett on takedowns and riding-time advantage.
Michigan (7-1, 2-1 Big Ten) will close out the weekend with a 2 p.m. contest at No. 25 Rutgers on Sunday (Jan. 22) at Jersey Mike's Arena in Piscataway, N.J. The dual will be streamed live on B1G+.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 7 Ohio State (9-1, 3-0) turned in a dominate effort Friday in College Park, Maryland by downing the No. 23 Terrapins (8-2, 0-2) 38-6 to improve 3-0 in Big Ten Conference competition.

The Buckeyes started off quick with a Sammy Sasso win at 149 by major decision and never looked back, winning nine of the 10 bouts on the evening.

How it Happened

149 | No. 3 Sammy Sasso (OSU) def. No. 18 Ethen Miller (UMD) | MD, 12-1

Sasso scored a hard-fought takedown about halfway into the first period for a 2-0 lead after one. Starting at the down position, Sasso added a point with an escape for a 3-0 lead. Another takedown made it 5-0 Sasso after two periods. Miller escaped to start the third before another Sasso takedown followed by a four-point near fall for a win by major decision, 12-1.

157 | No. 22 Paddy Gallagher (OSU) def. Kevin Schork (UMD) | TF, 22-5

Gallagher was quick out of the gates with a quick takedown followed by a Schork escape. Another Gallagher escape made it 4-1. A two-point near fall added to the Ohio State advantage (6-1). The lead increased to 22-5 after two periods for the win by technical fall.

165 | No. 8 Carson Kharchla (OSU) def. John Martin Best (UMD) | D, 7-2

Kharchla, who has been out since early December, returned to dual competition to lead after the first period 2-0. An escape made it 3-0 Kharchla to open the second. Another takedown made it 5-0 to end the second. Kharchla finished off the match to win by decision, 7-2.

174 | Isaac Wilcox (OSU) def. Dominic Solis (UMD) | SV, 3-1

Wrestling up a weight class, Ohio State’s Wilcox fell behind 1-0 after an escape to open the second period following a scoreless first. Wilcox tied the bout at 1-all with a third-period escape. RIDER TAKES TIGHT MATCH OVER PRINCETON FOR MAC-IVY RIVALRY TROPHY

Rider eked out a 19-18 win on the fourth criteria Saturday night in Jadwin Gym to take home the MAC-Ivy Rivalry trophy.

The teams split the 10 matches 5-5, nixing criteria A, and with no falls, forfeits, defaults and disqualifications, criteria B was out. Total points, criteria C, came out even as well, at 66-66, moving the decision on to criteria D, near-fall points. Rider had 18 of those, with Rider's Quinn Kinner accounting for 14 of those in his tech-fall win at 149.

Princeton got wins from Quincy Monday (165), Nate Dugan (184), Travis Stefanik (285), Patrick Glory (133) and Ty Whalen (157) and had a team-score lead as large as six as late as 15-9 after Glory's win. Rider then won two of the last three matches, both by bonus points, taking an 18-15 lead into Whalen's meet-ending match at 157. Whalen won 6-4, but the points were just enough to keep the tally of total points scored - criteria C - even at 66-66, moving the match on to criteria D. All of the evening's near-fall points came across three matches, with Monday scoring eight in the meet's opener at 165 before all 18 of Rider's near-fall points came over the Broncs' final two wins, at 141 with four from McKenzie Bell and then at 149 with Kinner's 14.

Monday's match, which ended up being a 17-2 technical-fall win over Hunter Mays, was scoreless after a period, but an 11-point second period broke it open for Monday on a takedown and the eight near-fall points. Two more takedowns followed in the third period as a penalty point and the riding-time point clinched the tech fall.

The win kept Monday unbeaten on the season at 13-0, including 10-0 at 165. All nine of those wins have come over the past month, beginning with a 6-0 run at the Midlands Championships and his non-exhibition collegiate debut at the weight.

"He's been solid. He's great," Princeton head coach Chris Ayres said of Monday. "He went to Midlands, sort of like an experimental run. I knew he was going to win (there). He's that good. That weight is tough (and) he wants the toughest guys."

Rider got on the board with a 3-1 win from Michael Wilson at 174 over Kole Mulhauser that saw all of its points scored in the third period, including the decisive reversal for Wilson.

Nate Dugan followed for Princeton at 184, getting a 19-6 major-decision win over Quinn Collins that saw Dugan roll up eight takedowns.

A matchup between two InterMat top-20 wrestlers followed at 197, with Rider's No. 10-ranked Ethan Laird getting an 8-3 win over No. 20 Luke Stout. Laird had an early takedown, but his lead was only at 2-1 before a big third period that saw Laird earn a pair of takedowns to open up the match.

The alternating wins continued, with Stefanik getting a 6-4 win over David Szuba at heavyweight. Stefanik had a takedown in each of the first two periods while Szuba had his lone takedown of the match in the first, and the rest of the wrestlers' points came on escapes.

"He's competing at a high level," Ayres said. "He's ranked now (No. 33 in the first NCAA coaches rankings of the season). That's a big deal."

After the midpoint of the meet, Rider's Tyler Klinsky had a 6-4 sudden-victory win over Nick Kayal at 125, getting a takedown in the extra time after each wrestler had a takedown in the first period and traded points on escapes with two apiece.

Glory, wrestling at 133 for the second time on the weekend after doing so for the first time in his collegiate career Friday night at Columbia, had three takedowns across the first two periods on the way to a 9-4 win over Richie Koehler to give Princeton a 15-9 lead.

Glory stayed perfect on the season with the win, moving to 10-0 overall and 2-0 at 133.

Rider then became the first team on the day to win back-to-back matches, taking the pivotal two at 141 and 149. Bell had a big second period in his 11-1 major-decision win over Sean Pierson, getting eight points on a reversal, a takedown and a four-point near-fall, and Kinner started with an eight-point first period on a takedown and six points on near-falls on the way to an 18-0 tech-fall win that ended with less than a minute to go in the third.

After a scoreless first period at 157, Whalen had a 4-2 lead after the second period, getting his points on a takedown, an escape and a penalty point before getting what turned out to be the decisive takedown in the third in a 6-4 win.

"Ty was great. A lot of pressure, pretty good crowd," Ayres said of Whalen. "He beat a New Jersey kid. He took care of business. That was good."

PROVIDENCE, R.I. and CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Cornell wrestling team kicked off the 2023 Ivy League season on Saturday with a pair of convincing road wins, toppling Brown 35-6 and Harvard 27-12 to improve to 7-2 on the season. Six different Big Red grapplers won two matches apiece on the day.

Cornell feasted on bonus points as it ran its conference win streak to seven. Cornell claimed two majors, three tech falls and three falls as part of its 15-5 day without wrestling three of its nine ranked grapplers.

Vince Cornella (141), Yianni Diakomihalis (149), Julian Ramirez (165), Evan Canoyer (174), Jonathan Loew (184) and Jacob Cardenas (197) each won both of their matches, with Canoyer picking up his first two collegiate wins and Loew earning a pair of pins in his return from injury. Diakomihalis (tech fall, major decision) and Cardenas (two tech falls) earned bonus points in both of their wins.

Both duals saw the score tied at 3-3 after 133 pounds, but Cornella put the Big Red in the lead both times and the visitor extended its long win streaks over both Brown and Harvard. Cornell has now won 25 straight against the Bears and 21 in a row vs. the Crimson.

Against Brown, Cornella's major decision victory set up a run where Cornell won seven of the final eight matches with five coming with bonus points attached. Both Ramirez and Loew earned first period falls sandwiched around Canoyer's first win, a 3-2 decision over Drew Clearie. Two additional wins, Brett Ungar to start the dual at 125 and Brendan Furman to close it at 285, finished a takedown from additional bonus points with 6-0 shutouts.

The Bears made it interesting with a fall by Trevor Tarsi at 157 to get within 10-9 midway through the dual. Ramirez got Cornell back on track with a testy decision, followed by Canoyer's win and then bonus point victories by Loew and Cardenas to clinch the team victory.
