ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team earned pins from Cameron Amine and Mason Parris but could not overcome an early deficit in a 23-15 loss to No. 6 Ohio State on Friday evening (Jan. 27) in front of 7,900 fans at Crisler Center. It was the Wolverines' first home loss of the season and first in four years to the Buckeyes.
Amine, ranked sixth at 165 pounds, put an exclamation point on an overtime match with ninth-ranked Carson Kharchla. Still 1-1 after regulation and the two-minute sudden victory, Amine started down first in the tiebreaker and reversed the Buckeye to his back, earning a four count then the pin -- his first of the season -- at the 9:21 mark. It was Amine's second top-10 win in four matches.
Parris, who moved to No. 1 in the national heavyweight rankings this week, secured his 11th pin of the season in the third period against Hogan Swenski in the final bout. Parris scored seven takedowns in the bout, including three in the first period, and transitioned from a double leg to a leg turk to earn the fall at 6:07. Parris improved to 20-0 on the season with 14 bonus wins.
Will Lewan, ranked 10th at 157 pounds, also earned a ranked win with a 6-4 sudden-victory decision over 23rd-ranked Paddy Gallagher. He rallied from an initial deficit, scoring a first-period takedown on the edge after a lengthy video review and finished on a single leg and ensuing scramble to earn the winning takedown early in overtime.
Michigan dropped the first four matches and, for the second time in three duals, was doomed by close decisions in swing bouts with four matches decided by two points or less.
Jack Medley, ranked 20th at 125 pounds, fell 4-3 to 10th-ranked Malik Heinselman on a second-period takedown and was close on a couple chances of his own, including a dump attempt in the waning seconds of the third period. Dylan Ragusin and Cole Mattin lost at 133 and 141 pounds, respectively, on late takedowns, including an overtime score in a 3-1 sudden-victory decision by ninth-ranked Jesse Mendez in the former. Mattin scored on a first-period takedown and second-period reversal but fell to 18th-ranked Dylan D'Emilio, 7-5, on a late double leg.
Matt Finesilver, ranked eighth at 184 pounds, cut the deficit from his first meeting with fifth-ranked Kaleb Romero but couldn't score a takedown of his own in a 7-4 loss. Rylan Rogers bumped up a weight to make his collegiate dual debut in a 5-3 defeat to 21st-ranked Gavin Hoffman at 197 pounds.
Michigan (8-2, 3-2 Big Ten) will close out the weekend against Maryland at noon on Sunday (Jan. 29) at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.

Just watched the replay on BTN+. He was on bottom, got up to his feet and then spun away for the escape and twisted his knee. He was down for awhile and in a lot of pain. Finally walked back to center but collapsed again before the restart. Limped off the mat in tears. Didn’t look good. Hopefully nothing is torn.

Sure has. It was his “good” knee (unwrapped). He was basically in tears limping off. Seemed less about pain (as he walked off, he was definitley in a lot of pain initially) and more that he knows something is really wrong. Obviously not in his head so I’m speculating.

Swiderski was the hyped guy. I don't know how many spots the Big12 will get at 141, but he might not even qualify for Nattys. Unless there's another qualifying tournament in Gilbert? It's pretty obvious the kid needed to redshirt. Hard to understand what the Clone staff was thinking having him go this year?
Dresser ruin another kid?
Kevin just lucky ISU isn't in the B1G or his team would have been exposed long ago.

Swiderski was the hyped guy. I don't know how many spots the Big12 will get at 141, but he might not even qualify for Nattys. It's pretty obvious the kid needed to redshirt. Hard to understand what the Clone staff was thinking having him go this year?
Dresser ruin another kid?
Kevin just lucky ISU isn't in the B1G or his team would have been exposed long ago.
I think I saw Swiderski had a shoulder brace on a few weeks ago. Wondering if he is fighting through some serious shoulder injury? He did look really tough against Woods (who I think is going to win it all this year), so I’m surprised about some of his recent losses.

What happened to Duke? Never a power program, but used to be respectable . . .

No more Finesilvers?

Swid had a very good pre season summer results before he got to ISU, but he should have redshirted.
I think Dresser is feeling pressure and Coleman is gone after this year and Carr after 23/24, so he probably thought this season was his only chance at a top ten finish. Fact is...outside of Carr, no one under Dresser has done crap for their first/second season.
The bar is incredibly low at ISU, and it's not an attractive job.
In his 5th/6th year at ISU, Dresser has massive holes at 125/157/174 and had to plug in two, true freshman at 141/149....not sure why they can't develop kids? What a mess.
Edit...Maybe 149 was a greyshirt?

MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 11 University of Minnesota wrestling program continued their unbeaten home streak on Saturday afternoon, as they rolled to a 24-9 victory over Illinois.

Only favored in four of the bouts heading into the dual, Minnesota rolled to three upsets throughout the dual, including two over top-10 opponents, and ended up with seven wins out of the dual's ten matches.

The dual kicked off at 157 pounds, where Sebas Swiggum would fill in for the late-scratch Brayton Lee, putting up a commendable effort in an 11-6 loss against a ranked Michael Carr.

Cael Carlson put the Gophers on the board first at 165 pounds, stepping into the lineup to knock off No. 19 Danny Braunagel by 2-1 decision. The story of the match was Carlson's tough third-period ride, building riding time over one minute before Braunagel's escape to put himself out front for the win.

Bailee O'Reilly kept Minnesota rolling with a statement win at 174 pounds against tenth-ranked Edmond Ruth, putting a halt to Ruth's 20-match win streak. O'Reilly came out firing with an opening takedown and a tough ride to jump to an early advantage. Then, an escape and a locked hands exchange in favor of O'Reilly helped the Goodhue, Minn., native put it away.

Isaiah Salazar kept his win streak alive at 184 pounds with a 3-2 decision against Dylan Connell, with an opening-period takedown from Salazar proving to be a difference-maker in the bout.

After a narrow loss from Michial Foy to head into the break, Garrett Joles put the Gophers back on track in the second half with a 7-3 win over Matt Wroblewski, tallying two takedowns and a reversal in the win.

Patrick McKee looked dominant in his bout at 125 pounds as he dominated Maximo Renteria by way of 14-2 major decision. McKee opened the match with an eight-point flurry in the first frame, then secured two takedowns in the third to get into bonus territory.

Perhaps the most impressive win of the day came from Gopher 141-pounder, as he earned bonus points as well in a 12-2 upset victory over No. 9 Danny Pucino. Bergeland won the takedown battle and was offensive on top with a pivotal first-period turn and over four minutes of riding time.

Michael Blockhus closed out the dual with his own major decision, rattling off six takedowns in a 14-4 victory over the Fighting Illini's Jake Harrier.

The Gophers now jump to an impressive 11-2 mark on the season, with a 4-2 record in conference play. Illinois drops to an even 5-5 on the year after the loss, now sitting at 3-3 against Big Ten opponents.

The "U" will now look ahead to next Friday night as they play host to the No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes for their home finale at 8:00 p.m. CST live on Big Ten Network.

Swid already took a gap/grayshirt. How much time does he need?

He looked pretty good until he hurt his shoulder. He just doesn’t look like the same guy as prior to the injury. That’s the biggest thing, IMHO.

Minnesota looked really good today. Hopefully they are trending upward. The big 10 is more fun when Minnesota is respectable.

No he didn't.

Swid is a true freshman.

BTW...I doubt Clone fans are too disappointed in this season's results. They don't care if ISU wins, they're happy with achieving close losses.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – A third-period fall from Wyatt Sheets over No. 10 Austin Yant proved to be the difference in the Oklahoma State wrestling team's 19-17 victory over No. 15 Northern Iowa on Saturday night.

Coming out of intermission the Cowboys trailed Northern Iowa, 10-7, after the Panthers won three of the first five bouts. Tied at one in the third, Sheets countered a shot and stuck Yant on his back to swing the momentum to OSU's side and hand Yant his first loss of the season.

No. 6 Dustin Plott defeated No. 13 Lance Runyon, 7-3, and No. 18 Luke Surber claimed a decision of his own over true freshman Wyatt Voelker as OSU was able to hold on to the win and extend its win streak to six.

Carter Young was also able to collect a bonus-point win over a top-10 opponent with a 15-7 major decision over No. 8 Cael Happel at 141 pounds. Young jumped out to an early 12-1 lead in the first period with a pair of takedowns three turns. He would score three escapes from there over the next two periods to clinch the major. The win was Young's second over a top-10 wrestler this year and moved him to 3-0 in his career against Happel.

Soon after the Iowa meet. He missed a month and has been wearing a shoulder brace. He’s struggled since returning.

Thank you. You’re right and I was wrong. I thought he was in the 2021 gap year group with Johnson but he won MI state in 2022.
I was replying to his redshirt, not his injury

After Zach Blankenship gave up a major decision to Kyle Gollhoffer to open the dual, No. 2 Daton Fix responded with an 8-1 win over No. 11 Kyle Biscoglia to set up Young's upset.

Victor Voinovich and Kaden Gfeller each dropped close decisions to Panthers before intermission, while Gavin Stika fell by major decision to No. 2 Parker Keckeisen with Travis Wittlake out and Konner Doucet lost 3-2 on riding time to No. 13 Tyrell Gordon at heavyweight.

Oklahoma State Falls at No. 4 Iowa State, 18-11

AMES, Iowa – The Oklahoma State wrestling team moved to 9-2 on the season after an 18-11 loss at No. 4 Iowa State that came down to the final bout on Sunday in Hilton Coliseum.

The Cowboys and Cyclones were tied at 11 going into the 197-pound match after trading decisions through the first eight bouts. No. 18 Luke Surber stood toe to toe with No. 5 Yonger Bastida at 197 pounds for two periods, but after Bastida chose down and escaped to start the third, an injury timeout allowed him to retake bottom position and separate the score to put the Cyclones ahead.

At heavyweight, redshirt freshman Kyle Haas made his dual debut against No. 10 Sam Schuyler. Haas entered the match 10-3 on the season with eight falls, but was unable to get anything going against Schuyler as he dropped a 10-1 major decision, which clinched the dual for Iowa State.

The Cyclones struck first at 125 pounds with a 10-4 decision from Caleb Fuessley over Zach Blankenship. The Cowboys responded with back-to-back wins from Daton Fix and Carter Young to take the lead. Fix improved to 16-0 this season with a decision over Zach Redding, while Young knocked off No. 19 Casey Swiderski, 3-0, to cap off a stellar weekend.

At 149 pounds, No. 18 Victor Voinovich fell to No. 6 Paniro Johnson, 3-1, with a second-period near fall being the difference in the match. Kaden Gfeller immediately returned the lead to OSU with a 3-1 decision over No. 27 Jason Kraisser behind a third-period reversal and riding time point.

Iowa State would win two of the next three bouts to tie up the dual, but the Cowboys were able to hold No. 2 David Carr and No. 4 Marcus Coleman to decisions in their matches. No. 6 Dustin Plott improved to 15-1 this season with a 13-7 decision over No. 23 Julien Broderson.

Oklahoma State will look to bounce back on Friday against No. 3 Michigan as it heads to Arlington for Bout at the Ballpark at Globe Life Field. The Cowboys will then return home for another conference showdown with No. 9 Missouri.

#15 UNI 23, RV OKLAHOMA 12

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa ---
After a tough dual loss to No. 10 Oklahoma State on Saturday night, UNI wrestling bounced back for an impressive 23-12 win over the Oklahoma Sooners on Sunday afternoon inside the McLeod Center.

The Panthers are now 8-1 against Oklahoma under head coach Doug Schwab, and have won 6 consecutive duals against the Sooners. Schwab also tied former Panther coach Doug McCuskey (1931-52) with his 102nd dual win with UNI, tied for 3rd all-time in program history.

After narrowly dropping the open match at 125 pounds, Kyle Biscoglia got the Panthers on the board 2 minutes into his match at 133 pounds with a takedown and pin of No. 28 Wyatt Henson. The fall marks Biscoglia's fifth pin of the season.

Cael Happel fell short at 141 pounds after surrendering a stall warning points, plus the riding time point to No. 23 Mosha Schwartz in a 2-1 decision. Colin Realbuto bounced back after nearly giving up a nearfall takedown and rallied for a 7-6 decision victory over John Wiley, thanks to an impressive third period with a late takedown and reversal.

Derek Holschlag capped a two-win weekend as he scored a single leg takedown of Jared Hill in the first period, and added points for locked hands and riding time in a 4-1 decision. Coming off his first loss of the season on Saturday night, Austin Yant responded with a commanding third period against Alejandro Herrera-Rondon, picking up a pair of takedowns, plus points for locked hands caution, a stalling point and riding time in a 12-1 major decision.

After dropping the bout at 174 pounds, Parker Keckeisen picked the Panthers back up at 184 pounds by scoring three points in the second period against Keegan Moore with a takedown of his former UNI teammate, plus an extra point for a caution on Moore. Picking up the riding time point for the 4-1 decision win, Keckeisen improves to 2-0 against Moore in his career.

Noah Glaser jumped on Carson Berryhill at 194 pounds with a quick first period takeown and continued to dominate as the bout continued. With takedowns in each of the final two periods, plus a point for lock hands, an escape and over 3 minutes of riding time, Glaser cruised to a 9-1 major decision.

Tyrell Gordon nearly pulled off the victory against No. 16 Josh Heindselman at 285 pounds, tying the match at 2-2 after Heindselman's second stalling call with one second remaining in the third period. Heindselman however would get a quick takedown early into overtime to grab the 4-2 sudden victory decision.

Kalob Runyon meanwhile competed in one extra bout prior to the start of the dual, securing a 3-1 decision over Seth Seago at 197 pounds, thanks to an escape in the second period and a takedown with just under one minute left in the bout.

My God, how bad is Okie State?

It is seriously time for Smith to retire. Even Fix can't get bonus points.

And as an aside... Swiderski got beat again and as an added bonus, got a penalty and a team point taken away as he left the mat. The wheels are coming off for him as he apparently isn't dealing with losing too well!!! Some of us knew going to ISU wasn't a good idea.
