No. 4 Ohio State is back at the Covelli Center Nov. 18 vs. Columbia. Match time is 7 p.m. with B1G+ providing the live stream.

The last time Virginia Tech came to Columbus to wrestle in Covelli Center, they upset the home team. That didn't happen this time.

Despite fielding a set of ranked combatants who came to Columbus ready to upend the No. 4 Buckeyes, the No. 14 Hokies couldn't get the job done. Ohio State won 6 of 10 bouts on the card, earning the 18-13 win via a series of close, hard-fought decisions.
The night got off to a rocky start at 149 pounds as No. 27 Caleb Henson pulled off a massive upset of No. 2 Sammy Sasso. The veteran Sasso scored early in the match and held a 3-0 lead after two periods, but Henson was able to force overtime with a late takedown and a rideout, ultimately winning the bout with another takedown in Sudden Victory.
Henson's victory sparked a strong performance from unranked Clayton Ulrey in the next bout against No. 22 Paddy Gallagher at 157. Ulrey had all the offense early, scoring a pair of takedowns in quick succession and adding a third early in the second; escapes and a reversal kept Gallagher in the match midway through the battle.
Gallagher landed the move of the night when he scored a takedown and a 4-point near fall that was the nearest thing to a fall anyone managed all night. The back points broke the match open, and Gallagher would cruise to victory, providing a glimpse of the greatness Ohio State fans home to see from the young hammer.
No. 6 Carson Kharchla was in control most of his match but let No. 29 Connor Brady hang around, ultimately earning a 3-1 decision at 165. The same could be said of No. 4 Kaleb Romero's bout at 184 in which he was the clear aggressor over No. 9 Hunter Bolen, but couldn't put the match away until the final whistle. Romero scored very early in the match, but couldn't finish another takedown, holding Bolen off with a 4-2 decision.
Between Kharchla's and Romero’s matches, No. 6 Ethan Smith came a hair's breadth from upsetting No. 2 Mekhi Lewis. Smith wrestled an excellent match, but a single Lewis takedown in the first period made the difference in the final score.
Gavin Hoffman, Tate Orndorff and Malik Heinselman each won low-scoring decisions to effectively seal the victory for Ohio State heading into the final two matches of the night.
At 133, reigning NCAA and Big Ten Wrestler of the Week Jesse Mendez squared up against No. 19 Sam Latona, the 2021 ACC Champion and an NCAA All American. Mendez wrestled an aggressive match early with lots of action, but gave up a takedown to Latona in the second that decided the match. It was Mendez' first collegiate loss, but one from which he can learn and improve in the weeks ahead.
The night's final match featured another true freshman, Nic Bouzakis. Unlike Mendez, Bouzakis is expected to take a redshirt season, but used one of his NCAA-allowed five matches to fill in for Dylan D'Emilo/Jordan Decatur, both of whom were banged up at the Michigan State Open last weekend.
Bouzakis looked game early, despite having moved up a weight class from 133 to 141. He drew first blood in the match with an early takedown, and added on a reversal later in the period. From there, though, it was all Virginia Tech's Tom Crook. Crook would ultimately score 14 points in the match, with enough fo a cushion to earn the only bonus points of the night. It made no difference in the outcome of the dual, but was undoubtedly a disappointing result for the No. 1 overall recruit in the Class of 2022.

It was a throwback night for Rutgers wrestling at the College Avenue Gymnasium, but the newness in the lineup shined as the Scarlet Knights thumped Clarion for a 29-4 win Friday evening in New Brunswick.

Four wrestlers making their dual-meet debut for No. 21 Rutgers picked up their first career victories, which helped coach Scott Goodale clinch the 200th of his career. The milestone came in the opener of Goodale’s 16th season and in the venue where the coach first started building the Scarlet Knights into a perennial Top 25 program.

Goodale, the winningest coach in program history, knows this year’s lineup could be one of its deepest ever. There are questions up and down the lineup about who will start where, how experience will mesh with talented rookies, who will take redshirts and while none of those long-term questions were answered on opening night, several newcomers made sure they were ready for their first dual meet in a Rutgers singlet.

Especially true freshman Brian Soldano.

The three-time state champion from High Point showed exactly why he arrived at Rutgers as one of its top-ranked recruits ever. After giving up the first takedown, Soldano worked his way to a major decision and secured his first ranked victory with a 15-5 major decision against Will Feldkamp, who entered ranked No. 21 and was Clarion’s only returning NCAA qualifier.

Below are three more observations from Friday’s match.

1. The Dean of College Ave

We’re a long way away from finding out who will be the starter at 125 pounds, but redshirt freshman Dean Peterson, a former state champion from St. John Vianney, got the first start of the season over sophomore Dylan Shawver. Peterson worked his way to a 6-1 decision against Joey Fischer, a result which did nothing to separate the two battling for the starting role. Last season, Shawver also defeated Fischer by decision when Rutgers met Clarion. It’s even possible Shawver gets the start tomorrow when Rutgers takes on Sacred Heart and No. 6 Arizona State in its showcase at Liberty High School in Bethlehem, Pa.

2. Newbies, not shoobies

The four newcomers in the lineup looked impressive. The list included Peterson, Soldano as well as graduate transfer Joe Heilmann and redshirt freshman Tony White. Heilmann (133) and White (149) appear to be locked in as the starters at their weight classes but what happens at 125 and 184 will continue to be two of the biggest storylines for the lineup. Soldano can wrestle five times without burning a redshirt as part of the NCAA’s new freshman eligibility rule so expect to see the High Point standout a lot in the first semester before Goodale has to make a decision about who ultimately ends up in redshirt — Soldano or sophomore John Poznanski, who earned All-American honors as a true freshman in 2020.

3. Oh no, oh yes! Connor O’Neill steals one

The bout of the night came at 165 pounds where Connor O’Neill got a takedown in the final 10 seconds to pick up an 8-7 win over Eli Brinsky. O’Neill, who is down a weight from a season ago, went back and forth with Brinsky and looked to be in trouble in the third period but worked his way back to erase the riding time point and eventually got a pair of takedowns in the final minute to come from behind and win.

Site: Fayetteville, N.C. (Fort Bragg)
Event: Battle at Bragg
Score: #5 Michigan 26, Campbell 6
Records: U-M (1-0), CU (2-2)
Next U-M Event: Sunday, Nov. 13 -- at North Carolina (Chapel Hill, N.C.), 3 p.m.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed eight bouts to earn a decisive 26-6 win in its dual-meet opener over Campbell at the Battle at Bragg event on Veterans Day Friday evening (Nov. 11) at Pope Army Field at Fort Bragg.

Three Wolverines earned their first collegiate dual win while another two made also their dual-meet debuts. Michigan opened the dual with one such win -- and perhaps the most exciting match of the evening -- with Kurt McHenry's 4-3 buzzer-beating decision over No. 24-ranked Anthony Molton at 125 pounds. Molton took the lead with an inside trip midway through the third period, but McHenry escaped and, on a restart with just six seconds left in the bout, he shot in on a low single off the whistle and finished with just three seconds remaining on the clock.

Dylan Ragusin, ranked fifth at 133 pounds, built up an early lead and hung on for a 9-7 decision over Domenic Zaccone in his season debut. Ragusin gave up the first takedown but answered with a single leg in the first and a go behind in the second -- and period rideouts on both -- to move in front. Zaccone added two takedowns in the third, but Ragusin used his 1:11 riding-time advantage to seal the win.

Cole Mattin, ranked 14th at 141 pounds, picked up his third ranked win of the season with a dominant 9-0 major decision against 21st-ranked Shannon Hanna. He scored takedowns off of scrambles in the first and third periods and added two near-fall points off a leg turk in the latter. He accumulated 3:05 ride time and improved to 5-0 on the season.

Chance Lamer, ranked 22nd, earned an 11-6 decision over Callum Sitek in his season and dual-meet debut at 149 pounds. Lamer scored two takedowns and a reversal and rode for 1:05 in a bout that featured a 15-minute rain delay after Army officials had to move a military plane in order to close the hangar door after wind was blowing rain onto the mat.

Will Lewan, ranked third at 157 pounds, earned a workmanlike 4-2 decision over Troy Nation at in his season debut at 157 pounds. Lewan finished on a single-leg shot at the first-period buzzer and added a reversal early in the second.

Campbell scored its first win with a decision at 165 pounds before Michigan bounced back with back-to-back wins at 174 and 184 pounds. Joseph Walker finished on a re-attack double about 30 minutes into overtime in a 3-1 decision against Cole Rees for his first collegiate dual-meet victory at the former weight. Matt Finesilver, ranked 14th nationally, rolled to a 10-2 major decision over 19th-ranked Caleb Hopkins at the latter. Finesilver scored four takedowns, including a pair in the third period, and rode for 3:08 to claim his first Michigan dual win.

Mason Parris, ranked third at heavyweight, closed out the dual with a 7-5 decision over 13th-ranked Taye Ghadiali -- his second win over a ranked opponent this season. Parris scored on takedowns in the first and third and nearly rode out the second but gave up a late counter takedown out of a scramble to narrow the final margin. He earned 2:55 in riding time and improved 6-0 on the season.

The Wolverines (1-0) will wrap the Tar Heel State road trip against North Carolina on Sunday (Nov. 13) in Chapel Hill. The dual, dubbed Doubles on the Diamond, is slated for a 3 p.m. start on UNC's baseball field, Bryson Field At Boshamer Stadium.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – No. 1 Penn State (1-0, 0-0 B1G) rolled over visiting Lock Haven 44-3 in the dual meet opener for both teams Friday night in State College. Three Penn State freshmen made their Nittany Lion debuts in sold out Rec Hall as Penn State dominated the visiting Bald Eagles. Over 6,500 fans filled Rec Hall in the 62nd straight shut-out in the building.

The dual began at 125 where redshirt freshman Gary Steen made his Penn State debut against No. 13 Anthony Noto of Lock Haven. Steen battled the ranked Bald Eagle tough before dropping a 14-4 major. No. 1 Roman Bravo-Young returned to the Rec Hall mat and rolled through Gable Strickland at 133. Bravo-Young posted a 23-8 technical fall, finishing off the bout at the 6:55 mark to put Penn State on top 5-4.

Beau Bartlett, ranked No. 16 at his regular weight of 141, dominated his way to a 10-0 major over Lock Haven's Ty Linsenbigler. Redshirt freshman Shayne Van Ness, ranked No. 27 at 149, made his Nittany Lion debut in fine fashion by pinning Lock Haven's Connor Eck. Van Ness got the debut fall at the 6:32 mark. Junior Terrell Barraclough closed out the first half with a thrilling win at 157. He used a reversal and a third period rideout to post a 3-1 win over No. 28 Ashton Eyler. Lock Haven was deducted one team point for unsportsmanlike (bench) during the match as well and Penn State led 18-3 at intermission.

Redshirt freshman Alex Facundo, ranked No. 23 at 165, made his Penn State debut to start the second half and put on a takedown clinic. The Nittany Lion freshman rolled up 12 takedowns on his way to a 27-12 technical fall at the 5:35 mark, putting Penn State up 23-3.

No. 1 Carter Starocci stormed through Tyler Stoltzfus 19-5 at 174, giving the Nittany Lions a 27-3 lead. Penn State finished off the dual with a tech fall and two pins. No. 1 Aaron Brooks picked up ten takedowns and beat Colin Fegley 24-9 at 184, getting the tech fall at the 6:32 mark. No. 1 Max Dean pinned Brad Morrison in the first period at 197. Dean got the fall at the 2:03 mark to put Penn State up 38-3. Junior Greg Kerkvliet, ranked No. 2 at 285, closed out the dual with another first period fall. He pinned Ethan Miller at 1:21 to give Penn State the 44-3 dual victory.

The Nittany Lions rolled up 52 takedowns to just six for Lock Haven (nine of LHU's 10 wrestlers did not notch a takedown). Penn State picked up 17 bonus points off three pins (Van Ness, Dean, Kerkvliet), three tech falls (Bravo-Young, Facundo, Brooks) and two majors (Bartlett, Starocci).

Penn State will send a large contingent of wrestlers to Binghamton on Sunday, Nov. 13, for the Bearcat Open. The Nittany Lions return to action on Sunday, Nov. 20, at the Army Black Night Open in West Point, N.Y.

DUAL MEET BOUT-BY-BOUT:

125: Redshirt freshman Gary Steen made his Penn State debut at 125, taking on No. 13 Anthony Noto. Noto fought off an early Steen shot and notched the bout's first takedown to take a quick 2-0 lead. Steen quickly escaped and cut the lead to 2-1 after just :19. The two wrestlers continued on the Lion logo through the 1:00 mark when Steen nearly countered a Noto shot for his first takedown. Steen got in deep on a single and looked to lift Noto for the takedown, but the Bald Eagle countered for a takedown and a 4-1 lead after one. Noto chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 5-1 lead. He then worked his way through another takedown and led 7-2 after a Steen escape. Noto added another takedown with :35 left and led 9-2 with over 1:00 in riding time after two periods. Steen chose down to start the third period and quickly escaped to a 9-3 score. Noto shot low at the 1:10 mark and took Steen down to lead 11-4 after a Steen escape. Noto finished off the bout with another takedown and posted the 14-4 major with 2:07 in riding time.

133: Roman Bravo-Young, ranked No. 1 at 133, took on Lock Haven's Gable Strickland. Bravo-Young took the Bald Eagle down quickly and led 2-1. He then began to tack on the takedowns, added two more quickly and led 6-3 with 1:09 on the clock. Strickland gained control of Bravo-Young's ankle with under a minute on the clock, but the Lion forced a stalemate and then worked Strickland down to the mat for a fourth takedown with :18 left. He finished on top and led 8-3 with 1:11 in riding time after one. Bravo-Young chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 9-3 lead. Bravo-Young hit a high single for a fifth takedown shortly after to lead 11-4. Bravo-Young added a sixth takedown with :35 left, cut Strickland loose and jumped over a low Bald Eagle shot for another takedown with :12 left and led 15-5 with 1:26 in time after two periods. Strickland chose down to start the third and Bravo-Young cut him loose, took him down and cut him once more quickly to lead 17-17 with 1:20 on the clock. The Nittany Lion grad student rolled through two more takedowns. He turned Strickland for two back points on the last to end the bout at the 6:55 mark with a 23-8 technical fall.

141: Beau Bartlett, ranked No. 16 at 141, met Ty Linsenbigler. Bartlett took a handful of low shots that Linsenbigler stepped back from as the first period hit its midway point. The Lion continued to force the Bald Eagle to the outside circle through the 1:00 mark. Bartlett's pressure paid off as he bulled through a takedown to lead 2-0 with :35 on the clock. The Nittany Lion finished the period on top and carried that lead into the second stanza. Bartlett chose down to start the second period and muscled his way through a reversal to lead 4-0 with 1:40 on the clock. Bartlett forced a stall warning and then muscled him to his back for two nearfall points and a 6-0 lead. Bartlett picked up a stall point and finished on top to lead 7-0 after two. Linsenbigler chose neutral to start the third period. Bartlett worked his way into a scramble at the 1:20 mark and spent the next :50 pushing for a takedown, which he got, to lead 9-0. He finished the match on top and, with 2:24 in riding time, rolled to a 10-0 major.

149: Redshirt freshman Shayne Van Ness, ranked No. 27 at 149, met Lock Haven's Connor Eck. Van Ness came out firing, taking Eck down for a quick 2-0 lead. Van Ness put together a strong ride, controlling Eck for the next two minutes to build up a sizeable riding time edge while trying to turn the Bald Eagle for back points. Van Ness cut Eck loose late and quickly took him down for another takedown to lead 4-1 with 2:32 in time after one. Van Ness chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 5-1 lead. He then bulled through a high double for a 7-1 lead and forced a first stall warning as well. Eck escaped only to be taken down quickly by Van Ness. The Lion freshman then turned the Bald Eagle for a near fall, picking up four points to lead 13-2 with 3:48 in time after two. Eck chose neutral to start the third period, but Van Ness quickly took him down to lead 15-2 off the whistle. The Lion then went to work on top. He picked up another stall point to lead 16-2 and then wrapped up a cradle. He finished off his Nittany Lion debut with a pin at the 6:32 mark.

157: Terrell Barraclough met No. 28 Ashton Eyler at 157. Barraclough battled the ranked Eagle evenly for the first half of the period and then worked his way in on a single leg, forcing a scramble. Eyler was able to work his way out of trouble and the bout continued in neutral through the 1:00 mark. Barraclough took another high shot and worked his way into a takedown with just :05 on the clock. But the call was challenged by Lock Haven and overturned. The Bald Eagle bench, however, was called for unsportsmanlike and a team point was taken from the team score. With the bout tied 0-0, Barraclough took down to start the second and steadily worked his way into a reversal and a 2-1 lead. The Lion nearly finished the second period with a takedown, but time ran out on the scramble, and he settled for the one point lead after two. Eyler chose down to start the third period and Barraclough rode strong on top, building his riding time point over 1:00.

165: Redshirt freshman Alex Facundo, ranked No. 23 at 165, met Aiden Gaugler. Facundo quickly took control of the Bald Eagle's left ankle and scrambled his way to a takedown and a 2-0 lead at the 2:31 mark. He cut Gaugler loose to a 2-1 score then snapped into a low shot for another takedown and a 4-1 margin. Facundo cut Gaugler loose once more, countered a slight shot and then worked his way around for a third takedown to lead 6-3 after cutting the Eagle loose once more. Facundo added two more quick takedowns to lead 10-4 with :36 left in the opening period. Facundo added a sixth takedown before the clock hit 0:00 and led 12-6 after one. Facundo chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 13-6 lead. He worked the outside circle for a seventh takedown and led 15-6. The Lion freshman picked up another takedown and cut, leading 17-8 at the :50 mark. He blew through a high double to lead 19-9 and finished the period with two takedowns in the final :18 to lead 23-10 after two. Gaugler chose down to start the third, Facundo cut him, took him down, cut him once more and finished off the match with a takedown, posting the 27-12 tech fall at the 5:35 mark.

174: Carter Starocci, ranked No. 1 at 174, met Tyler Stoltzfus. Starocci came out firing notching a quick takedown to lead 2-1. He took a 3-1 lead off a Haven penalty and then lifted the Eagle off the mat to up his lead to 5-2 at the 1:55 mark. Starocci blew through a high double to up his lead to 7-2 as he worked his time edge up towards 1:00. Starocci cut Stoltzfus loose and then lifted him off the mat for another takedown and a 9-3 lead. Stoltzfus escaped at the :35 mark and Starocci finished the period with a takedown to lead 11-4 with 1:19 in time after one. Starocci chose down to start the second and picked up a point on an illegal hold before escaping to a 13-4 lead. He then pushed Stoltzfus to the mat for another takedown and a 15-4 lead. Starocci, fast on his feet, used another high double for another takedown to lead 17-5 with :30 left in the period. He finished the middle stanza on top and carried that lead, and 1:56 in time, into the third period. Stoltzfus chose top to start the third period. Stoltzfus was able to ride Starocci long enough to work his time edge off and forced Starocci into a stall warning. Starocci finished with a flurry, reversing the Bald Eagle to post the dominant 19-5 major decision.

184: Aaron Brooks, ranked No. 1 at 184, took on Colin Fegley. Brooks took Fegley down twice win the opening minute to lead 4-2 early. He added a third takedown with 1:50 on the clock and then built up over 1:00 of riding time, while picking up a stall warning, as the clock moved below 1:00. Brooks cut Fegley loose and quickly turned a low single into another takedown and an 8-3 lead. He finished the period on top to carry that lead into the second period with 2:13 in riding time. Brooks chose down to start the second stanza. He escaped :20 into the period and then used a fast low single to take Fegley down and led 11-4. He picked up a stall point and another takedown to up his lead to 14-5 after cutting Fegley loose at :45. Brooks added a takedown with :12 left in the period, finished on top and led 16-5 after two with 2:45 in time. Fegley chose down to start the third period and Brooks cut him loose. He then added two quick takedowns and led 20-7 with clinched riding time. Brooks took Fegley down once, cut him, then finished off the 24-9 tech fall with a final takedown at the 6:32 mark.

197: Max Dean, ranked No. 1 at 197, battled Brad Morrison. Dean took Morison down quickly to open up a 2-0 lead and then went to work on top, looking to turn the Bald Eagle for back points or more. Dean spent over 1:30 working to turn Morrison and got him over to his back at the 1:05 mark. He adjusted and got the fall at the 2:03 mark.

285: Greg Kerkvliet, ranked No. 2 at 285, faced off against Ethan Miller. Kerkvliet took Miller down twice in the opening minute, working up a 4-1 lead. After the second takedown, the Nittany Lion spent a few seconds working Miller to his back and finished of the dual meet with a pin at the 1:21 mark.

Yeah...I can get Iowa season tickets a hell of alot easier. Here, we put our name on a list, collect points and then wait years for people to die to get a call. I guess that's what you deal with when you have the best collegiate wrestling program on the planet and like to use a cozy little arena. No worries though, the PSU and Iowa matcb will sell out to around 16,000 or so at BJC..

Wittlake up two weights at 184 is interesting. Okie St has a pretty solid lineup. The dual with Iowa is gonna be close

If you truly are the best, why not move it to an actual arena and sell it out? So apparently the people arent very bright over there or you are not the best

I'll bet you 10K that IOWA would sell more tickets to an open practice held at Carver if they ever wanted to do it!

lots of good kids for sure. will they stay healthy though? they've been snakebit pretty bad recently.

i still think fix and young should switch. i think daton wins 141 and young could place at 133 which is a better weight for him.

Iowa Stave vs Cal Baptist (Iowa's opponent tomorrow)

Johnson picks up the major decision at 149 pounds with a big third period! He wins, 12-2. ISU 4, CBU 0. KRAISSER GETS THE FALL! ISU 10, CBU 0

Not sure about Fix at 141. Dude is 5’4”, I think he’d have issues with some of the length up a weight. I imagine if he wasn’t there Young would be at 133.

true, but i think he's way more talented. matthews isn't exactly long at 141. definitely not his ideal weight, but nobody close to rby's level either.

CBU will be the preeminent Cali team within 4 years. (Makes me sad that Troy f'd up Fresno State's 2nd chance.)

Given the state of California college wrestling, it might be an easy ask. I think the biggest hurdle is their tuition cost vs the other three, two state schools and Stanford which has a lot of financial aid.

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team won both matches in its season-opening doubleheader at No. 14 Lehigh and Bucknell on Saturday.

The No. 11 Cowboys began the day with a tough road test against the Mountain Hawks taking the dual, 25-6, before driving two hours to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania where they defeated Bucknell, 30-6.

"I think anytime you're coming into a dual meet and you know it's pretty even, you know it's going to take a great effort on the road to win," Smith said after the win over Lehigh. "You have to win those close matches, that's how you win dual meets. For us, we did a good job in third periods, which is big."

Two Cowboys made their dual debuts against Lehigh both picking up decisions in their bouts. Victor Voinovich fell behind 8-0 early in the first period after getting thrown to his back by Manzona Bryant IV. Voinovich responded with an escape before crawling back into the match with multiple takedowns over the remainder of the first and second period. Late in the third period, trailing 13-11, Voinovich hit Bryant with an inside trip to send the match to sudden victory before adding another takedown to win the match. Konner Doucet used a third period ride to earn the riding time point and clinch his match against No. 26 Nathan Taylor.

Including Doucet and Voinovich, the Cowboys rattled off wins in five straight matches after the dual began with No. 8 Michael Beard defeating No. 28 Luke Surber, 10-7, at 197 pounds. Kaden Gfeller took the mat against No. 9 Josh Humphreys and nearly pinned the Lehigh star, but a late reversal and riding time point won the match for Humphreys. The Cowboys closed the dual with wins at 165, 174 and 184 pounds as All-Americans Wyatt Sheets, Dustin Plott and Travis Wittlake all won by decision.

In the second match of the day, Trevor Mastrogiovanni put OSU up early against Bucknell, pinning Grayson McLellan in 1:17. The Cowboys ended up taking eight of the 10 bouts, only dropping decisions at 141 pounds and 157 pounds to the two ranked wrestlers in Bucknell's lineup.

Daton Fix, Voinovich, Sheets, Plott, Wittlake and Doucet all improved to 2-0 on the season with wins against Bucknell. Surber picked up his first win at 197 pounds with a 13-5 major decision over Mason McCready.

Oklahoma State returns to action for its home opener on Friday, Nov. 18, in Gallagher-Iba Arena to host Wyoming in its first conference matchup of the season.
