MANHEIM, Pa. – The Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team (3-0, 0-0 B1G), ranked No. 2 in the latest InterMat Tournament Power Index (TPI), dominated Army West Point (0-1) in the home opener for head coach Cael Sanderson's squad. Penn State won eight of ten bouts to post the 32-7 victory.

The dual meet was wrestled in front of nearly 6,500 fans in a sold-out Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions have wrestled in front of 56 straight sellouts in Rec Hall and 62 of 64 including six of eight sellouts at the 16,000-seat Bryce Jordan Center). The dual also marked the first time Penn State wrestled in front of its home fans since Feb. 23, 2020, when Penn State beat American in Rec Hall.

The dual began at 125 where sophomore Baylor Shunk (Centre Hall, Pa.) made his Rec Hall debut at 125 and posted an 8-4 win over Army's Ryan Chauvin, putting Penn State up 3-0 early. Senior Roman Bravo-Young (Tucson, Ariz.), ranked No. 1 at 133, put on a takedown show, reeling off 13 takedowns on his way to a 26-11 technical fall over Dominic Carone at the 6:36 mark.

With No. 1 Nick Lee (Evansville, Ind.) given the night off, junior Brandon Meredith (Limerick, Pa.) moved up a weight to 141 and battled No. 29 Corey Shie tough before losing 5-2. Sophomore Beau Bartlett (Tempe, Ariz.), ranked No. 27 at 149, used a takedown late in extra time to post a thrilling 3-1 (SV) win over No. 20 P.J. Ogunsanya. Sophomore Terrell Barraclough (Kaysville, Utah) made his season debut at 157 and dropped a 9-0 major to No. 32 Markus Hartman. Hartman's win cut Penn State's lead to 11-7 at the break.

Junior Creighton Edsell (Wyalusing, pa.), ranked No. 32 at 165, used a late takedown to post a hard-fought 4-3 win over Army's Christian Hunt to begin the second half. Sophomore Carter Starocci (Erie, Pa.), ranked No. 1 at 174, was dominant once again, rolling to a 23-5 technical fall over Clayton Fielden at the 6:56 mark.

Junior Aaron Brooks (Hagerstown, Md.), ranked No. 1 at 184, picked up nine takedowns in a dominating 21-7 major decision over No. 28 Brad Laughlin to put Penn State up 23-7. Junior Max Dean (Lowell, Mich.), ranked No. 4 at 197, made his Rec Hall debut as a Nittany Lion and thrilled the sold-out Rec Hall crowd, posting a 17-1 tech fall at the 3:13 mark. Sophomore Greg Kerkvliet (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), ranked No. 5 at 285, capped off the outing by amassing over 5:00 in riding time in a lopsided 14-3 major over Army West Point's Brandon Phillips. Kerkvliet's win finished off Penn State's 32-7 victory

The Nittany Lions rolled up a 41-4 margin in takedowns. Penn State picked up eight bonus points off three tech falls (Bravo-Young, Starocci, Dean) and two majors (Brooks, Kerkvliet).

Penn State is now 3-0 overall while Army falls to 0-1. The Nittany Lions return to action in two weeks when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to battle the Penn Quakers on Friday, Dec. 3. The dual begins at 7 p.m. in The Palestra. Two days later, Penn State hosts Lehigh in Rec Hall on Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m.

MINNEAPOLIS – The Oklahoma State wrestling team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 23-10 victory on the road at No. 11 Minnesota that saw six Cowboys defeat ranked Golden Gophers.

"I thought we looked good at several weight classes," head coach John Smith said. "Our theme this week was to get better, but we didn't get better at some weight classes. We didn't have much killer instinct in us and didn't want to finish some matches off. It's early and hopefully we will improve from this match as we move onto Drexel next weekend."

The sixth-ranked Cowboys got off to a quick start when sophomore Trevor Mastrogiovanni upset No. 5 Patrick McKee, who was an All-American last season. Mastrogiovanni held a 4-3 after the first period, and separated the score in the second with an escape and pair of takedowns to extend his lead to 9-4. He finished off a 10-6 decision to put the Cowboys up 3-0.

"He had a really good effort," Smith said. "There was a lot of confidence in his performance and those takedowns were big and critical. He picked him up when he was in on legs and he did a nice job finishing his shots, which made a difference in the outcome."

Daton Fix moved to 2-0 on the season with an 18-7 major decision over No. 33 Jake Gliva. Dustin Plott, Dakota Geer and AJ Ferrari each moved their record to 2-0, as well, with wins today.

Ranked 15th in the nation, Plott took down No. 23 Jared Krattiger with a convincing 6-1 decision. At 184, Geer clinched the victory for OSU with a takedown in sudden victory. Geer and No. 21 Isaiah Salazar, who was 4-0 on the season, ended regulation at a 1-1 tie before Geer sealed his second victory of the season in the first sudden victory period. Ferrari got off to a fast start in his match with Michial Foy as he led 4-1 after one period. He doubled his lead in the second period and used a takedown with three seconds remaining to collect his second major decision in as many matches.

No. 22 Kaden Gfeller and No. 6 Travis Wittlake earned their first wins of the season after dropping bouts to top-10 opponents at Stanford. Down 2-0 after the first period, Gfeller took control of the match in the second period with an escape, takedown and four-point turn. He finished off No. 26 Michael Blockhus by a score of 10-3, while Wittlake defeated No. 21 Andrew Sparks, 8-3.

The Cowboys took seven of 10 matches in the duals with the losses coming at 141, 157 and heavyweight. At 141, true freshman Carter Young dropped his dual debut to Jake Bergeland by a score of 6-4, while Wyatt Sheets dropped his match with No. 5 Brayton Lee, 15-9. Luke Surber had the daunting task of facing top-ranked heavyweight and Olympic champion, Gable Steveson, who collected a 20-7 major decision.

Oklahoma State will return to Stillwater and prepare for its home opener with Drexel on Sunday, November 28. The Cowboys will host the Dragons at 2 p.m., which can be seen on Big 12 Now on ESPN+

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 8 Ohio State (2-0) traveled to Blacksburg, Virginia, Friday to face No. 10 Virginia Tech (0-1) at Cassell Coliseum and the Top 10 battle did not disappoint. The Buckeyes earned the 17-13 win that was not decided until the final bout between heavyweights Tate Orndorff of Ohio State and the Hokies’ Nathan Trexler.

How it Happened

The match started at 125 between No. 14 Malik Heinselman from Ohio State and No. 12 Sam Latona of VT. Neither was able to score until Heinselman earned an escape to start the second period for the 1-0 lead. Latona tied it at 1-all with an escape to start the third. Heinselman earned the first takedown of the night with 40 seconds left and then added another after a Latona escape to win by decision 5-2.

Dylan Koontz was next up for the Buckeyes at 133 vs. No. 4 Korbin Meyers. Meyers led 2-1 after the first period but Koontz tied at 2-all with an escape in the second before another Meyers takedown made it 4-2 heading into the third. Meyers went on to earn a 10-2 win by major decision to give the Hokies a 4-3 lead.

At 141, Dylan D’Emilio took on Collin Gerardi of Virginia Tech. Despite an action-packed first period, there were no points awarded heading into the second period. D’Emilio was in control for the entire second to collect two minutes of riding time. D’Emilio escaped to start the third and scored a late takedown to win by decision 4-0 after the riding time point was added.

In one of the two featured Top 10 matchups of the match, No. 2 Sammy Sasso of Ohio State and No. 9 Bryce Andonian of Virginia Tech battled at 149. Sasso scored first with a takedown and added two more around two Andonian escapes and a late Virginia Tech reversal to make it 6-4 after the first. Sasso escaped to start the second for a 7-4 lead to start the third period. Andonian escaped to start the third then was awarded a takedown before an Andonian reversal made it 9-7. Sasso secured the match with an escape and a point for riding time to make the final 11-7 and a win by decision.

Starting in the down position to start the third, Kharchla earned an escape and a point for riding time to win by decision, 5-2.

Lewis grabbed the escape point and then a takedown to win the match by decision, 6-4.

The lead doubled to 4-0 heading into the third period after Jordan was called twice for stalling. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia wrestling team (2-1) dropped a tight dual to Campbell (3-1) by a score of 21-15 at the Aquatic & Fitness Center on Saturday (Nov. 20) as the Camels pulled away with wins at the final two weight classes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a back-and-forth battle on Saturday with the teams effectively trading scores to find themselves deadlocked at 15 after eight weight classes. Virginia got bonus-point victories from Brian Courtney at 133 and Justin McCoy at 165 pounds – Courtney won by major decision while McCoy picked up a tech fall early in the second period.

A pin by Campbell’s Austin Murphy at 174 pounds made up the difference and put Campbell on top heading into 184 pounds. Michael Battista would then pull of the upset with a 6-5 decision at 184 pounds over No. 16 Caleb Hopkins to knot the match at 15. Battista pulled even with Campbell after a review awarded him a stall point before he got an escape right before the buzzer to take the win.

Campbell would then get decisions at the final two weight classes to claim the dual.

NOTES ON THE DUAL
• Virginia is now 6-1-0 all-time against Campbell in the series between the two teams.
• Brian Courtney (133), Jon Errico (157) and Justin McCoy (165) all improved to 3-0 in dual action this season.
• Scott Kiyono (149) and Krystian Kinsey (174) both saw their first dual action of the year.

FROM HEAD COACH STEVE GARLAND
“We lost a really tight dual today that went down to heavyweight, but you have to give Campbell credit because every time we did something good, they responded. It was back-and-forth, but they won the close ones and found a way to get gritty when they needed to. We have to learn from that and that’s what we’re going to work on.”

UP NEXT FOR THE HOOS
Virginia will return to action next weekend when members of the squad travel to compete at the Mat Town Open hosted by Lock Haven on Sunday (Nov. 28).

THACA, N.Y. - In his first dual from the head coach's seat, Mike Grey '11 and the Cornell wrestling program defeated Stanford, 30-9, on Saturday night. The Friedman Wrestling Center was buzzing all evening as fans came out in droves for the much anticipated return of long-time Cornell head coach, Rob Koll. The Big Red won eight of 10 total matches, including three with bonus points.

"The Friedman was as loud as I've ever heard it tonight," Grey said. "When Julian Ramirez won it was as loud as when Kyle Dake defeated Alex Krom back in 2009. The fans showed out and made it tough for Stanford. It was a raucous environment and that's how we like it. Our guys fought and won the fifty-fifty positions tonight. I attribute that to our training and our desire to send a message in this match."

Saturday marked the Friedman dual debuts of freshmen Greg Diakomihalis, Cole Handlovic and Julian Ramirez, as well as sophomores Colton Yapoujian, Chris Foca, Jacob Cardenas and Lewis Fernandes. Yapoujian appeared in a pair of duals for the Big Red during the 2019-20 season, but never wrestled under the lights in Friedman.

Greg Diakomihalis wrestled a tight match with Logan Ashton at 125 pounds in the first bout of the night. Both wrestlers traded escapes before Ashton scored the winning takedown in the third period.

Making his return to the Cornell lineup up a weight from where wrestling fans last saw him two seasons ago, sophomore Vito Arujau wasted no time firing off shot after shot against #32 Jackson DiSario. Arujau found a takedown a minute into the first period and never let up, taking down DiSario four times and reversing him twice over the course of the match in addition to having nearly four minutes of riding time.

Handlovic impressed at 141 pounds in his Big Red dual debut, defeating Jason Miranda by decision, 4-0. A lengthy scramble led to the first takedown for Handlovic and a big mat return helped him mount an early riding time advantage. Miranda put a hard ride on Handlovic's legs in the second period to erase the riding time, but a reversal at the end of the second gave Handlovic a 4-0 lead.

Junior Yianni Diakomihalis didn't disappoint in the most anticipated match-up of the night, defeating #8 Jaden Abas by a score of 3-1. Abas, an All-American at 149 pounds in 2021, got hit for stalling multiple times throughout the match as Diakomihalis was the primary aggressor throughout. An escape and a technical point for grabbing shoelaces gave Diakomihalis the advantage in the end.

Yapoujian used a late reversal in short time to defeat Charlie Darracott at 157 pounds, 4-3. A first period takedown gave Yapoujian a 2-0 cushion, but a pair of escapes by Darracott erased that lead heading into the third. Darracott put a tough ride on Yapoujian in the third, securing himself a riding time point, but Yapoujian's late reversal spoiled Darracott's upset attempt. Needing to ride out the final 15 seconds, Yapoujian was able to return Darracott to the mat.

In what will be one of the upsets of the year, freshman Julian Ramirez sent the Friedman Wrestling Center into a frenzy with a win over No. 1-ranked Shane Griffith at 165 pounds. As the defending NCAA Champion, Griffith entered Saturday with just one loss on his collegiate resume. Ramirez came out of the gates quick and scrambled for the early takedown. On bottom to start the second, Ramirez escaped and tried to throw Griffith who ended up off the edge of the mat. Griffith started the third on bottom and escaped to bring the score to 3-2 before the Stanford corner challenged a call of 'no takedown' near its corner. After review, the refs upheld the call on the mat, securing the upset for Ramirez.

"Ramirez is a big time performer," Grey said. "He has to continue to have the same performances week-in-and-week-out, but when the lights are on he's going to wrestle. We know he has the talent and we believe he can do those things."

Foca took an early 6-2 lead over #30 Tyler Eischens with a takedown, two near fall and a reversal. Eischens scored a reversal of his own and escaped twice to bring the score of 6-4 heading into the third where he put a tough ride on Foca. Foca defended well on bottom and didn't allow Eischens any chance at a turn, grinding out the 6-4 victory.

Junior Jonathan Loew continued his strong start to the season at 184 pounds, earning a fall in 1:37 against Colbey Harlan. Loew worked for it and eventually found the assassin that him and senior Ben Darmstadt have worked on in the room together.

Cardenas capped off a great night of wrestling with an 18-3 tech fall over #26 Nick Stemmet at 197 pounds. The Kearny, N.J. native didn't let up for a second in the bout, scoring four takedowns in the match and adding two sets of back points. Cardenas added an escape and 2:27 of riding time to earn his first dual win.

Stanford took the final bout of the evening by injury default.

Up Next: Cornell will wrestle at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, Dec. 3-4 before heading to Florida for the Journeymen National Duals on Dec. 20.

Another ranked match came between top names in the 125 weight. No. 4 Brandon Courtney earned a decision over No. 20 Joey Prata. The two were tied leading into the late stages of the third period but a two-point takedown by Woodley gave him a 5-3 win.

Surprised at Young losing! He likely is a bit small for the weight!

That and his road to fame has been freestyle.

Yep and while he's a stud young wrestler who will get better as the season progresses, it's example #98798798 why people put WAY too much stock in offseason freestyle results when predicting near term folkstyle success.

IMO, there are not 98,798,798 examples of why freestyle and folkstyle successes don't relate. A few yes, but ultimately wrestling is wrestling. That 15-12 win he had over Seth Gross was a great match to watch!

Obviously getting off bottom, mat wrestling and finishing his shots were a problem for Carter. That's not uncommon for D-1 college true freshman jumping into the big show for the first time. Remember Murin and Nathan Burak trying to finish shots as freshman?

He looked fine at the end of the match…just had to finish shots. I don’t know if I would have started him right out of the gate over going to opens and getting more than a few months in the room.
