BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Ending the match with a heavyweight pin by redshirt senior Brad Wilton, the Michigan State wrestling team took home a 29-12 victory over Gardner-Webb on Saturday night, scoring bonus points in all six of its winning bouts at Paul Porter Arena.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 3-0 in duals this season, while the Runnin' Bulldogs moved to 1-3 overall in dual matches.

In the first bout of the night, graduate student Julian Saldana had a late lead before Aedyn Concepcion rallied to get the 7-4 winning decision at 125, but redshirt senior Rayvon Foley countered with his first major decision in dual action this season, 13-5, over the 133-pound Todd Carter from Gardner-Webb.

Graduate student Matt Santos also took a lead into the third period of his 141 bout, but was defeated in a 5-4 decision against Trevon Majette. Picking up his first dual win of the season, 149-pound redshirt sophomore Peyton Omania claimed the victory via injury default over Brandon Bright, while sophomore Chase Saldate followed with a 13-0 major decision in the 157 battle with Taylor Parks.

Gardner Webb cut the MSU lead in the 165 and 174 bouts, as R.J. Mosley's early lead helped him hold off sophomore Caleb Fish in a 11-9 decision, and GWU 174-pounder Evan Schenk added a 5-3 decision over redshirt junior Nathan Jimenez to trim it to 14-12 Spartans in the team scoring.

The Spartans responded with three-straight bonus-point victories in the final three showdowns, as 184-pound redshirt junior Layne Malczewski used two second-period near-falls in a 15-0 technical fall against fellow 2021 NCAA qualifier Jha'Quan Anderson. Redshirt senior Cameron Caffey then recorded an 11-2 major decision over 195-pounder Anthony Perrine, using a behind-the-back headlock to score six of those points, while Wilton got the fall at 6:35 to close out Peyton McComas in the 285 matchup.

Michigan State returns to the mat on Saturday, Dec. 18 with a tri-meet at Olivet. The Green and White will face Baldwin Wallace at 5:30 p.m., before wrestling the host Comets at 7 p.m.

Head Coach Roger Chandler Quotable
"In order for us to win that this level, it doesn't matter who you're wrestling, those bonus points are a big part of what we do. I talk about it quite a bit within our program. Obviously, those six guys were able to come up with bonus points that were a key factor in getting the team win."

"I think it's huge for Rayvon personally to put up bonus points after being frustrated the past couple matches. One of Rayvon's strengths is his conditioning and his ability to keep attacking throughout the entire match and put up points. Credit to his opponent, the guy competed hard the entire time and Rayvon found a way. Even after being taken down, Rayvon kept his senses, and that's what championship-level wrestlers do. They put the negative things behind them really quickly and they move forward. That's what he did tonight."

"I'm really proud of Brad in so many ways. It's not ideal for him to be wrestling heavyweights, but he's doing it for the team and I think he's figured out how to wrestle these big guys who have quite a bit of weight on him. He hand-fought and competed with that guy the entire way. It was back and forth up until the very end of the match and he's a guy who's always looking for the fall. He's a very dangerous wrestler if he ends up in his best position, and that's what happened."

"Layne is maturing as one of the highest competitors in the country every week. He's just being cool and calm. He used to be immature in previous years, and he's just being calm and relaxed out there. I know when he's coming up, good things are going to happen. I couldn't be more pleased, he lights a fire under our team."

197: HM Cameron Caffey (MSU) maj. dec. Anthony Perrine (GWU), 11-2
Caffey fended off a leg hold by Perrine to end the first period scoreless, and then had the second-period escape that set up a behind-the-back headlock for a takedown and near-fall before Perrine escaped. Another near-fall by Caffey to start the third was countered by Perrine escaping again, but Caffey was able to end the period with an 11-2 major decision.

Zach Schrader wins in sudden death, Maryland wrestling beats Navy, 18-16

No. 32 Zach Schrader found himself in a familiar situation in sudden death against No. 33 Riley Smith. If he beat Smith, he would complete another comeback victory for Maryland wrestling.

With loud chants for Schrader echoing around the Xfinity Pavilion, the two were waiting for their moment to go in for the kill. But after a stall warning against Smith brought the two back to the center of the mat, Schrader finished off Smith with a takedown as the Maryland bench jumped in the air.

Schrader motioned to the crowd and celebrated the Terps’ third-straight dual victory, 18-16, over Navy — their first win against the Midshipmen since 2012.

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Maryland wrestling upper weights won four matches in a row and lifted the Terps to an 18-16 win over in-state rival Navy, 18-16. After trailing 16-6 to the Midshipmen, Dominic Solis, Kyle Cochran, Jaron Smith, and Zach Schrader all won their matches by decision to lift the Terps (3-2) to their third comeback win of the season.

Down 16-15 in the team score, Schrader battled with Navy's Riley Smith as the pair went into sudden victory. Schrader was the more aggressive of the two, and the mindset paid off as the heavyweight took the Midshipmen down, winning 3-1, and sending his teammates and XFINITY Center Pavilion crowd into a frenzy for the second straight week.

Last week, on December 4, Schrader clinched victories over Drexel and Duke for the Terps. The transfer from California-Baptist has proven to be one of the Terps' most reliable and highly-ranked wrestlers.

Maryland got on the board in the third match of the day when 141-pounder Danny Bertoni secured a 7-3 decision. 149-pounder Michael North entered the third period tied 2-2 but using the top position, he managed to ride out his opponent for the entire frame and earn a one-point riding score to pick up the win. Solis, Cochran, and Smith followed with victories, setting up Schrader for the dramatic victory.

The quartet of Solis, Cochran, Smith, and Schradeer are now 29-9 and outscoring opponents 300-148.

This was the Terps first win against Navy since January 20, 2012, when Maryland won in Alumni Hall 23-12. The current streak marks the program's first three-match winning streak since November 2017.

Heinselman was the problem. He should have had all that energy for that ot match he won. Rather then take it out on Ferrari and not be taken down by him. He started that as Iowa is always the problem. lol
