COLUMBIA, Mo. – UNI wrestler Brody Teske opened dual competition with two top-20 wins.

No. 3 Missouri sealed the first dual of the UNI wrestling season with bonus points late in the match to win 25-16, and the Panthers fell to No. 10 Virginia Tech, 39-3. UNI, ranked 17th, is now 0-2 in duals, 0-1 in the Big 12 Conference.

UNI jumped out to an early lead over Missouri with two bonus point-wins and an upset over an opponent ranked in the top 15. UNI kept the lead until Missouri picked up bonus points in the 184-pound match.

At 125 pounds, Brody Teske notched his second fall of the year, pinning No. 18 Noah Surtin of Missouri. Kyle Biscoglia built up riding time in his 133-pound match to secure a 10-0 major decision over No. 27 Trey Crawford.

Cael Happel opened his collegiate dual career at 141 pounds with a top-15 win over No. 12 Allan Hart, a two-time NCAA qualifier seeded sixth at last year's national championships. Happel is ranked No. 29 in the Intermat rankings.

At 174 pounds, Pat Schoenfelder won the rubber match with No. 9 Peyton Mocco. This was the third meeting between the two. Mocco won at 157 pounds in 2018. Schoenfelder won the last meeting in 2019 at 165 pounds. Missouri grabbed wins at the final three weights.

Teske was the only Panther to get a win against Virginia Tech, with a 7-4 decision over All-American Sam Latona.

UNI wrestling will return home to host its first event of the season with the UNI Open. Competition is set to start in the UNI-Dome 9 a.m. Dec. 11.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – No. 3 Missouri wrestling (4-1, 4-0 Big 12) competed through two ranked duals at Hearnes Center Saturday, winning 25-16 against No. 17 Northern Iowa (0-2, 0-2 Big 12) and losing in overtime, 18-16, against No. 10 Virginia Tech (3-1, 0-0 ACC).

In the first matchup of the day, the Tigers battled back from a slow start with their first points coming from freshman Josh Edmond at 149 pounds. Coming out of the 13-0 deficit, Mizzou won six of its final seven matches, including wins by fall from freshman Keegan O'Toole and redshirt sophomore Jeremiah Kent.

Following the break between duals, Mizzou got off to a quick start with a pin from freshman Noah Surtin. Junior Allan Hart, freshmen Keegan O'Toole and Rocky Elam also logged wins. The dual came down 285 pounds as Mizzou dropped its final match 3-1 in overtime.

The match of the day came at 174 pounds with redshirt sophomore Peyton Mocco taking the Hokies' 2019 National Champion Mekhi Lewis to three overtime periods. Mocco erased a 4-2 after the first period with a takedown and an escape to even the score at five-all. He also fought through the first overtime period with Lewis unable to secure a takedown.

Top Tigers

  • O'Toole rallied for a takedown at the final buzzer against VT to cement his fifth bonus-point win of the season. With his pin against UNI, he is the only Mizzou wrestler with all bonus-point wins.
  • Rocky Elam moves to 5-0 on the year with two wins Saturday.
  • Noah Surtin rebounded from a loss by fall to pin the 12th ranked 125-pounder for the highest-ranked victory of his career

From the Bench

On Peyton Mocco and the team's fight:

"He kept himself in it and gave himself an opportunity," head coach Brian Smith said. "He found ways to compete. There were some good battles out there. We're not that far away from some of the kids that we lost to. It's a good battle for us, but we need to get better."

On the upcoming Collegiate Wrestling Duals:

"It'll give us another opportunity to get on the mat against a tough team."

Up Next

Missouri will travel to Niceville, Florida, for the revamped Collegiate Wrestling Duals from Journeyman Wrestling Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 20-21. The round robin style tournament will feature pool play before going into a placing dual. The Tigers will wrestle Binghamton and No. 6 North Carolina State in pool play.
