Our buddy, Caffey, who I think has a covid year left, won again.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Seventh-year head coach Roger Chandler secured the 50th dual victory of his career, and No. 24 Michigan State wrestling took home a 20-16 senior night win over the No. 22 Indiana Hoosiers on Friday inside Jenison Field House. MSU utilized back-to-back bonus point victories from redshirt senior Layne Malczewski and graduate Cameron Caffey to clinch the match at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively.

Chandler became just the fourth head coach in Michigan State program history to reach the 50-win threshold, joining Spartan legends in Grady Peninger, Tom Minkel and Fendley Collins. Chandler also became the second-fastest head coach to reach that accomplishment, doing so in under seven seasons. MSU has experienced a resurgence in dual success under Chandler's guidance, going from 2-11 in the season prior to his assumption of the top job to improving the team's season win tally in each of the next three years. The Hoosier alum directed Michigan State's first winning season in 14 years during the 2018-19 campaign, going 10-8 overall.

Following the victorious result, Michigan State climbs to 9-6 overall with a 2-6 mark at the finish line of the Big Ten dual season. Friday's dual victory guaranteed that MSU would finish the season with a winning record for the second consecutive year. Indiana drops to 7-5 overall with a 3-4 ledger in the B1G, facing off against the Michigan Wolverines on Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor.

Before the first whistle, Spartan wrestling celebrated Caffey, Skyler Crespo, Rayvon Foley, Benny Gomez, Miles Hoey, Cameron Monzadeh, Peyton Omania and Ryan Vasbinder, as well as student manager Maddie Coon in a special senior night recognition. Both Caffey and Foley will finish inside the top 10 all-time in career victories at MSU with 117 and 114 wins, respectively. All nine individuals have left an indelible mark on the Spartan wrestling program, and their commitment has culminated in a combined 45 victories since the start of the 2017-18 season.

Friday night's dual began at 125 pounds, with Spartan junior Tristan Lujan taking the mat against Indiana junior Jacob Moran. Lujan got in on a single leg shot late in the first but failed to notch the opening takedown. The Selma, California, native Spartan took bottom to start the next period and escaped after 10 seconds, taking a 1-0 lead into the final stanza. Moran chose to start the third in neutral, and after neither wrestler mustered a score, Lujan scored the match-opening decision for MSU and his third individual win over Moran in less than two years. A nationally ranked bout at 133 followed, with 29th-ranked Hoosier freshman Henry Porter utilizing three takedowns and a tough third period showing to score a 10-5 decision against 17th-ranked Foley.

The Hoosiers won their second bout in a row at 141 pounds, as senior Cayden Rooks turned four takedowns into a 12-5 decision for Indiana over MSU redshirt junior Jordan Hamdan. Leading the dual by a 6-3 tally, 29th-ranked 149-pounder and Hoosier redshirt senior Graham Rooks notched five takedowns to score the first bonus point win of the evening, completing a 13-4 major decision over Omania that put Indiana out in front, 10-3. At the 157-pound weight class, Michigan State turned things around in the most highly anticipated bout of the evening between 12th-ranked junior Chase Saldate and 23rd-ranked Hoosier and Novi, Michigan, native Derek Gilcher.

Both wrestlers opened the first period with extensive hand fighting in the first period but neither managed to secure a score through the first three minutes. Gilcher took bottom to start the second, a decision he would come to regret after a pair of vicious Saldate mat returns paved the way for a two-minute ride by the Gilroy, California, native Spartan. After Saldate chose bottom to start the final frame, he tallied an escape in less than five seconds and landed a late takedown to finalize a 4-0 decision that cut Indiana's lead to 10-6.

The contest at 165 pounds between 21st-ranked MSU junior Caleb Fish and Indiana redshirt junior Nick South saw the Green & White pick up their second straight individual result. Fish scored a quick takedown followed by a hurried escape from South, making the score 2-1 in MSU's favor after the first. Fish started on bottom in the second and registered an escape less than 10 seconds into the frame. After South took bottom to start the third, Fish utilized an excellent ride and remained tough on top for long enough to secure the riding time point and finalize a 4-2 decision. Despite Indiana's return to the win column at 174 pounds, with No. 15 DJ Washington defeating freshman Ceasar Garza in a 4-0 decision, MSU remained within striking distance, trailing the dual 13-9.

No. 13 Malczewski took center stage against Clayton Fielden at 184 pounds, with the Macomb, Michigan, native Spartan wasting no time in a physical opening frame. After scoring the opening takedown a minute into the match, Malczewski sought opportunities to turn Fielden for back points to no avail, taking a 2-0 lead into the second period. Despite Fielden's attempt for a go-behind takedown, Malczewski miraculously managed to maintain control and roll to his right to finalize a pin at the 3:39 mark to put Michigan State ahead by a 15-13 score.

In order to clinch the senior night dual victory, MSU would need at least a technical fall in the 197-pound competition to ensure that Indiana would remain out of reach. No. 18 Caffey delivered just that. In a virtuosic display that was punctuated by eight takedowns and a four-point near fall at the very end, Caffey dismantled Hoosier junior Drayton Harris to secure an individual victory in his final match at Jenison Field House. One of the most dominant wrestlers in program history, the Carbondale, Illinois, native finished a 21-5 technical fall that afforded Michigan State an insurmountable 20-13 advantage. After 26th-ranked IU heavyweight Jacob Bullock got past Vasbinder in a 3-1 decision, the Spartans were able to complete the 20-16 win.

Following Friday night's result, Saldate became the second straight Spartan to finish the Big Ten dual season with an unblemished 8-0 individual record, joining Caffey's undefeated B1G effort from a season ago. Saldate owns a 21-4 overall record and has a 14-1 mark in dual match action, with his only loss coming against then-No. 1 and newly minted 165-pound Princeton star Quincy Monday during the Garden State Grapple. Saldate needs just five more wins to match his career-best mark of 26 set last year. Additionally, Fish extends his MSU-leading win tally to 22 overall after his win against the Hoosiers.

Malczewski's reputation as one of the most dominant individual wrestlers in the Big Ten continues to grow, as the Spartan logged his team-best 10th win by fall in the 2022-23 season. Malczewski's record climbs to 12-2 in dual matches with a 20-3 mark overall, making him the fourth Spartan to cross the 20-win threshold this season. Finally, Caffey saw continued success at 197 pounds, as the MSU graduate student improved to 17-3 overall and 12-3 in dual match competition with his tech fall over Harris. Caffey owns five technical falls this year, tying him with Foley for the team lead in the category.

MICHIGAN STATE QUOTES
Head Coach Roger Chandler

On the significance of earning his 50th career win…
"To be honest, I didn't know that was going to be my 50th. Truthfully, it's bittersweet. Just like I told my team in the locker room, guys like Cameron Caffey and Rayvon Foley have been here for six of my seven years as head coach. Those guys earned most of those wins. I look at the plaque, and my name may be on it as head coach, but these are their wins that they earned. I could not be prouder of our guys."

On the leadership of MSU wrestling's graduating class…
"We have built a really good culture within, and one of the things we talk about is leadership. These guys are mentoring our younger guys about leadership and things like that. We have true freshman that are leaders in our program because of the example our graduating guys have set. It's all about the example that those ahead of you set, so we are definitely in a good place as a program."

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – No. 3 Iowa State (15-2, 7-0 Big 12) won four of the final five bouts, as the Cyclones downed No. 14 Northern Iowa (7-4, 5-3 Big 12), 19-12. In front of a record-setting crowd at the McLeod Center, Iowa State downed the Panthers for the fourth-straight time.

Iowa State has now won 18 Big 12 duals in a row, its longest conference unbeaten streak in program history. It bests a streak of 17 duals (16-0-1) by the Cyclones from 1962-65.

After Ethan Perryman dropped a tough battle at 125 pounds, Zach Redding got ISU on the board with a win over No. 11 Kyle Biscoglia in sudden victory. Redding couldn't muster a takedown in regulation but used a reversal in the second period to counter a pair of Biscoglia escapes. The Cyclone managed a go-behind in the winner-take-all period to secure the upset, 4-2.

No. 8 Cael Happel used a takedown in the third period to defeat Casey Swiderski 4-3 at 141 pounds. Paniro Johnson notched a third-period takedown, as he beat Adam Allard 3-1. At 157 pounds, No. 20 Derek Holschlag defeated Jason Kraisser 4-1.

The run of Cyclone victories started with No. 2 David Carr at 165 pounds. Carr picked up the first bonus point victory of the match, as he beat No. 15 Austin Yant by 20-6 major decision. Carr recorded seven takedowns, including three in the third period, to seal the victory. The win was the 24th-straight victory for Carr, as he improved to 84-2 in his career. A big third period by MJ Gaitan led to a 9-5 victory over Lance Runyon at 174 pounds. Gaitan had a pair of takedowns, including one that turned into a four-point nearfall.

At 184 pounds, the rivalry between No. 2 Parker Keckeisen and No. 4 Marcus Coleman lived up to the hype. Coleman took an early lead on a first period takedown, but Keckeisen was able to even the match at 3-3 going to the second period. An escape and takedown in the second period for Keckeisen was enough for the 7-5 victory.

No. 4 Yonger Bastida earned a 12-6 decision at 197 pounds against Wyatt Voelker. Bastida had two takedowns in each of the first two periods and added a fifth takedown in the third period for good measure. At heavyweight, Sam Schuyler continued his winning ways to seal the Cyclone victory by beating No. 15 Tyrell Gordon 4-1. Schuyler had a first period takedown and an escape in the second before earning a point for riding time.

MADISON - A back-and-forth contest on Saturday afternoon went the way of the No. 9 Gophers, as they knocked off No. 19 Wisconsin by a score of 19-15.

With both teams splitting the ten bouts on the day, it was Minnesota's ability to find bonus-points that proved to be the deciding factor as the Maroon & Gold was able to find a pair of bonus-point wins in the dual.

Kicking off the dual at 149 pounds, Michael Blockhus secured a third-period fall over Aidan Medora to put six on the scoreboard for Minnesota. Blockhus was well in control throughout the match, securing seven takedowns and a pair of turns before hitting a cow-catcher midway through the final frame to pin Medora.

Wisconsin would take the next two matches to tie the dual before Bailee O'Reilly rolled to a methodical 14-4 major decision win over Josh Otto. The grad student put on a clinic in the neutral position with five takedowns in the match, and collected over three minutes of riding time in the victory.

The Gophers continued to roll at 184 pounds, where Sam Skillings would fill in for teammate Isaiah Salazar and defeat Wisconsin's Tyler Dow by 11-4 decision. Skillings controlled the match from start to finish, taking advantage of his reattacks to take down Dow five times throughout the match.

Wisconsin came out of the halftime break by rattling off three one-point victories to jump out front 15-13 and take their first lead of the dual, but Aaron Nagao would make his return to the lineup at 133 pounds and dominate former NCAA All-American Taylor LaMont, 5-1. After a scoreless first period, Nagao earned a reversal and a takedown in the second frame before putting on a tough ride in the period to add the riding time point and take the decision.

That culminated in a winner-take-all bout at 141 pounds, where Jake Bergeland would defeat Joseph Zargo by a narrow 1-0 decision to clinch the dual for Minnesota. It was a low-scoring affair, but a third-period escape proved to be the difference for Bergeland, as he defended well on the feet and did not allow Zargo to get to his offense.

The Gophers now close out the regular season with a 12-3 mark on the year, including a 5-3 record over Big Ten opponents, giving Minnesota their highest win total in a season since the 2018-19 campaign. After the loss, Wisconsin falls to 7-8 on the year with a 1-7 record against conference foes.

Looking ahead, the Maroon & Gold will enjoy a three-week hiatus from competition as they rest up and prepare for the Big Ten Championships, which take place on March 4-5 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

You're one, sharp cookie.

Repeating 5th grade, three times, was a wise investment by your parents.
It is nice that you are so clever. It did say the final score was 43 to 40. I also know that was a mistake. Please try to be clever in your response.

I just assumed(silly me)that a wrestling aficionado like yourself would know that score was impossible.

Oregon State deducted -2 team points for coach

CORVALLIS, Ore. – J.J. Dixon won a thrilling 12-3 major decision at heavyweight to highlight the Oregon State wrestling team's 20-10 victory over Wyoming Saturday at Gill Coliseum.

Dixon won his eighth bout of the season thanks to the major decision, which was his first of the year. He picked up a pair of four-point near falls over Terren Swartz. The first came in the second period, bringing the OSU crowd to its feet. His second came as time expired in the third, and coupled with riding time, gave him the 9-point victory.

Overall, the Beavers won seven bouts on the night, including the first five straight. Oregon State has won back-to-back matches versus the Cowboys after defeating Wyoming, 22-12, in Laramie last season.

OSU won its first five matchups for the second time this season, and first since a 45-3 win over Linfield on Nov. 13.

Oregon State got out to an early 6-0 lead thanks to back-to-back victories from Matthew Olguin and Mateo Olmos. Olguin, ranked 18th, started the night at 165 pounds with a 6-3 win over Cole Moody. Olmos, ranked 19th at 174, picked up an 8-3 victory over Hayden Lieb. Olguin has now won four straight while Olmos extended his win streak to five.

Trey Munoz pushed the Oregon State lead to 9-0 with a 6-3 decision over Quayin Short. Munoz won his 21st match of the year and the nation's No. 7 at 184 claimed his sixth consecutive bout. He is also now 10-0 in dual matches this season.

Jackson McKinney wrestled for the 11th time this season, and extended the OSU lead to 12-0 thanks to a 7-5 decision over Wyoming's Tyce Raddon at 197. McKinney is 5-1 in dual matches this season.

Dixon followed that with his major decision to up the lead to 16-0.

No. 19 Jason Shaner, after Wyoming picked up a major decision at 125, earned his 19th victory of the season with an 11-8 decision over Garrett Ricks. That win put OSU up, 19-4.

Riley Gurr effectively put the match out of Wyoming's reach with a 9-4 decision over Chase Zollman at 149. The Beavers were deducted two team points during the bout, giving OSU a 20-7 lead after the ninth matchup of the night.

Oregon State hits the road next Sunday when visiting Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. That match is set to get underway at 1 p.m. PT.
