"Our best players have not... been our best players," Yogi Ferentz

Well maybe not this quote - "Brad Banks led the Hawkeyes to the Rose Bowl in 2002-03."

Well technically he should have. For whatever reason the Orange bowl swooped in and took the Pac and B1G champions. I'm not sure why actually. Anyone else remember the reasoning behind that?

"That's the common bond in Iowa's two 11-win seasons under Ferentz. Those teams had the right quarterback. Brad Banks led the Hawkeyes to the Orange Bowl in 2002-03. Ricky Stanzi helped Iowa win the Orange Bowl in 2009-10.

Beathard might be a combination of both. He's averaging 228 passing yards per game and has scored three rushing TDs, and that timely slide helped Iowa beat Pittsburgh. "

If he is a combination of Banks and Stanzi we are looking at something very special. People will forget about OSU's quarterbacks by season end.

Iowa and Ohio State were co-champs of the Big Ten. Since Ohio State had the better overall record, they qualified for the Rose Bowl . They were also chosen for the national championship game. The Orange Bowl had first pick of teams not in the championship game and chose Iowa.

Ah, that makes sense. I figured that Ohio States invite to the MNC would push the co-champ into the Rose. I didn't realize that the Orange Bowl would be given first choice because of that.

In a world where Ohio State doesn't hog all the press, I would agree with you. Hopefully though he can be recognized as one of the B1G's best by the end of the year. He's only going to get better IMO. He saw a hard-hitting, well disciplined and coached defense last week. He wasn't always pretty, but he made the plays where they needed to be made. I'm betting that he is wishing he had that sure thing TD pass back though. That missed pass changed the entire game around.

"Defensive coordinator and strength coach Chris Doyle, recommended to Ferentz by Moore, started with Ferentz in 1999. Defensive back Reese Morgan joined in 2000. Ferentz's NFL connections from six seasons as an offensive line coach also can't be understated. Iowa quietly produced 25 NFL Draft picks since 2010, including three first-round tackles."

Odd they labeled Doyle as Defensive Coordinator and also called Reese Morgan a Defensive Back.

He is a little old to be playing DB and I don't remember him ever coaching the DB's either (maybe I am wrong here)

Very poorly edited article.

The pass didn't change the game. The blocked punt for a Pitt TD on the next play did. Had the pass been on the money, Iowa takes a 24-10 lead. Game over. Those two consecutive plays saw a 14-point swing, from a 24-10 Iowa lead to a 17-17 tie. But if the pass clicks, look at the ending we would have missed. CJ and these Hawkeyes are gamers. I like their chances against anyone on the schedule.

As for the pass itself: All CJ had to do was put a tad more air under it. I doubt he misses many more like that the rest of his career. Those babies are his bread and butter. But also remember that no one completes them all: not Johnny Unitas, not Tom Brady, nobody. CJ's just gettin' started.

Ohio State was in Fiesta Bowl/National Championship. Beings Ohio State was selected for that, it changed things up. The Rose Bowl then would have an at large selection, not a Big Ten team unless there was one available when they could choose. The Orange Bowl had first dibs, and they chose Iowa.

Beginning the next year, though, they changed the rules so that if a bowl lost a team to the NC game that bowl got to pick a team from their conference before anyone else could. The "Iowa" rule. Rose and B1G were not happy about an undefeated B10 team not going to the Rose Bowl. This led to undeserving Illinii team getting to the Rose a few years later. Not sure I'll ever get over our 8-0 2002 and 7-1 2004 B10 champs not going to the rose bowl, but Zook's runner-up 6-2 Illini making it.

In the BCS system at that time, the bowls rotated at-large picks. Neither Iowa nor USC won their conference outright that year. OSU was selected for the championship game (I believe the Fiesta Bowl that year?). The Orange Bowl picked second. The Rose Bowl got Washington State and OK.

Edit: This has been covered. Apologies for not reading the rest of the thread.

The Orange Bowl officially picked Iowa to replace Miami, which was big east champ they lost to NC game. Rose then picked OU (Iowa was off the board and rose didn't want two pic ten teams)

Orange also had some special exemption where they paid more that year to be allowed to get the first at large spot (USC) as I don't think it was actually their year to pick first.

This is correct.
