Our Defense

Josh isn't a good defensive player. Just big. Most likely will foul out against Ill. if he gets any minutes? Hopefully I'm wrong but....

Actually, Josh did a great job moving his feet and staying in front of his man, which is 90% of defense. He forced PU's big stars into some TOs and some ugly shots. IMHO, that's pretty damn good defense, especially for a kid who had never played a meaningful minute of basketball at Iowa until last night, and that came against what they say is the best damn team in the country.

Josh O struggles on rotations but that is to be expected he’s hardly played. He did a good job defending back to basket against players trying to power themselves inside. That is Kofis game to a T so Josh will be needed.

He looked waayyyy better than I thought he would. If he looked that good against those legitimate PU bigs he's definitely ready for an increased work load. He had some nice tough rebounds in there..very impressed with his performance and can tell he's been making nice progress...

Like others have said. Very encouraging performance.

He looked much more in control of himself than before.

I was pretty happy with his patience on offense too.

The couple times he had the ball he made good composed decisions on when to hold it and when to go at the basket.

I love the improvement we have seen on defense from the Hawks this year. I really think the overall mindset of this team has changed from past McCaffery squads. The 3/4 court press is what allowed us to stay in the game last night. Pure and simple. It disrupted Purdue's flow and affected their half-court offense even when they broke it.

I have to admit that I was highly skeptical off how the Hawks could replace over 100 playing minutes per game from last years line-up. With newcomers Rebraca, Sandfort & Mulvey only accounting for about 40-minutes per, the bulk of those minutes have been filled by inexperienced returnees. And essentially EVERY one of them has stepped up and shown that they can play.

Good job guys!

Wow. We just flexed our potential!

We’ve posited that this lineup maximized defense and rebounding while still having up,tempo high efficiency offense. JoeT and Perk are both getting steals at 4.6/100 possession (3.5/40m) and Ogundele leads team in rebounding /100 possession and 40 min/game. and we saw this last night. When you add the Murray’s overall excellence Defensiv metrics you have a superb defense unit , inside, outside and in the wings, however, this unit can also score at high efficiency levels.

For Iowa to get anywhere in March, they need to be at a place where O is getting more minutes than Rebraca.

Against teams that want to post bigs Josh will be more valuable.

Against teams that want to play 5 out and set a lot of screens Philip will be valuable.

I still think Keegan and Kris is our best 4 and 5 combo.

Not so sure about that. Patrick was outstanding in the second half ,

He didn't let Williams just bully him around the basket, which is what Williams wanted to do. He fouled 3 times in 16 minutes. That's just fine. If Iowa can get 15-20 decent minutes out of him against Coburn that would be fantastic.
