Our time to break some oars again at Kinnick on Saturday

Week 2: at Iowa State, mission accomplished 27-17 in Ames
Week 11: vs. Minnesota, next up for Iowa!

Time to get our 2nd trophy win of 2021. Minnesota brings in their best defense possibly, since 1977.

Ironically, Iowa won the reboot of the Iowa-ISU series that year (1977). Also, the Hawks won the reboot this year in Ames.

Minnesota enters Saturday's game with the No. 8 total defense in the country, allowing just 298.9 yards per game. That's on pace to the be the best mark the program has had since 1977 when it allowed 292.8 yards per game. Not including the season opener, Minnesota has held six of its eight opponents this season below what their season total offense average was entering the contest. In addition, the Gophers have held seven of their last eight opponents below their rushing average entering the game, including four opponents more than 50 yards below their average. The Gophers are holding opponents to 18.3 points per game. The unit is looking to post a scoring defense below 20 points per game for the season for the first time since 1999 (16.3). The last time before that was 1977 (15.5).

Back in 1977, yep, those Hawkeyes took care of business against Minnesota 18-6. It was the first time I personally witnessing the Hawkeyes win Floyd of Rosedale in Kinnick Stadium. Iowa had won the previous year in Minneapolis, in their original campus stadium outside.

Minnesota is 3-0 on the road this year, shutting out Colorado, 30-0, in Boulder on Sept. 18, winning at Purdue, 20-13, on Oct. 2 and beating Northwestern in Evanston, 41-14, on Oct. 30. It's the fourth time since 1961 that Minnesota has won its first three road games of a season, also winning its first three in 2019 and its first four in 2003 and 1999. The Golden Gophers are 12-3 in their last 15 games away from home, including bowl games, beginning with a 37-15 victory at Wisconsin on Nov. 24, 2018. During that stretch, only Ohio State (16-2) has a better mark away from home among Big Ten teams.

Ohio State, Bowling Green and last week, Illinois, fondly broke the oars of the Gophers in Minneapolis. No one has done it on the road yet to the Gophers.

No time like Saturday’s Black Out Game, for the Hawkeyes to accomplished it.

Iowa seeking 7 in a row over Minnesota 🤔

There look?

Looking forward to seeing these again in 2021. That 2019 game was special.

We celebrated Veterans Day this week. Like many of us, my father served, and he was a huge Hawks fan during his life. This year was always a special one for him.
