Good that the twins and Patrick are likely to play on teams overseas this summer. It really could help them develop their confidence and overall game, especially Kris. I kind of wish Fran had chosen his young guards to participate, instead of (or in addition to) Patrick and Keegan, who already have gotten a lot of time on the floor against top competition. If our new bigs can hold their own, next year could be a better year than most experts have predicted.

Did he choose them or did someone else? I could not find anything on the teams but I think the players are invited.

I only read the story on the home page. Seems like Fran must have had some input, or no reason Kris would have been invited.

I was hoping this would be the year they would be allowed to all take an overseas trip together. The last one I remember was Garza's freshman year. How often can they go?

Not sure that's true. I believe that they are invited. Could be the organization/coaches decided to take both twins. They are all on different teams, though.

Assuming they all have been vaccinated and there are high-level teams available to play internationally in Europe, that seems like an unusual decision. With the inexperienced guards and new bigs, this would have been a great year to get some extra playing time together against some decent competition.

They take these overseas trips every 4 years

This was the year they would have gone again; instead, out of precaution (and perhaps because of athletic dept finances), they are postponing this year's trip and will take the trip next year.

Tousaint and Ulis are both recovering from surgery which is why they aren't going. I even read that JBO may have to start practice as the PG because of this.

Does it seem like Iowa has had an unusual number of off season surgeries the last few years?

This is a great opportunity for those three. Keegan and Patrick are, and I think clearly so, the best two returning players. I'm in the school that thinks Kris could have played more but, given the record, its hard to disagree with the coaching decisions and you really can play too many guys in the regular rotation. Kris is probably going to be the first guy off the bench and probably play well.

The Hawks could drop from 3rd to 8th in the Big Ten and still be a 64 team NCAA pick. I think we'll be better than that.

I would bet most Iowa fans are unaware of this. What sort of surgery did they have?

Joe T and Ahron recovering from surgery. Still some uncertainty with the roster and foreign countries being open so makes sense not to plan a trip for Iowa. Keegan and Patrick were initially chosen, but coaches felt they needed another 6’8-6’9 player and Fran has another one that looks and plays like his All B10 Freshman! 😂🤣 Great opportunity for them to learn from 2 HOF coaches in Boeheim and Brown. Frank Martin isn’t bad either! 👍🏾

This opportunity is great for the 3 boys but also great for Iowa BBall.

Cannot foresee many game situations where at least 2 of the three Euro tourists are not on the floor. At this point they appear to be the core of the team. Other guys will get minutes and Joe may turn out to be indispensable but KPK look like the 3 guys that are going to be on the floor the most so the trip has a magnified benefit this season.

Thanks, didn't know about the surgeries. Anything serious?
It seems Fran was pretty mum on injuries last season. Toussaint was the topic of conversation, for lack of playing time during the season, and I'm guessing the ankle injury had something to do with it. The same with Ulis. I thought he deferred his shot too much. Maybe there was more to it than wanting to defer to others because he was a freshman.

Fran talked briefly about the injuries during a recent press conference, but didn't go into any real detail.

Kenyon, I'm excited for these Iowa kids getting to participate overseas this summer. I hope you can keep us filled in as to how it is going for them.

There are so many uncertainties about lockdowns in Europe right now I can see why they did not make a team trip. Personally we would like to go to Paris and/or Portugal to visit people we know. But there are just too many uncertainties right now to commit to anything
