Padilla Hype Train

giphy.gif

The High School Film matches what was on display from Padilla Saturday night @ NW. He can throw on the run and in the first :30 of the HS Film he steps up into the pocket and keeps his eyes downfield. I am excited about this game versus Minnesota, Padilla will get a week of reps with the starters. I am not a coach by trade but I trust my eyes and I like the offensive potential for the Hawks with #8 taking snaps.

Stop it !!! This kind of stuff makes my head ache. Showing some clip from high school years ago is beyond idiotic.

You just illustrated one of the biggest problem with Message Board football Einstein's - that between High School and the their Senior year in college football players mature physically, mentally and experience. Don't label a guy great or sucky based on 1 year...or even worse 1 game.

I saw enough of Padilla to realize he can be productive. He's not going to be superman....but if he can move the chains and give Defense a break for stretches, that will be one improvement already.

I think it will be very interesting to see how Padilla reacts when the Gophers throw a look at him he hasn't seen or sends a blitz from somewhere they may not have shown. The upside looks good so it will be a great test for him. I hope he performs great and takes the job or makes it hard to replace him. It will be interesting to see what changes in play calling Brian makes.

Not trying to rip Petras, and that's not what this post is for... but I just watched some of his Swarm19 film, and just the first 5 highlights of it, his pocket allowed him A MINIMUM of 3.5 seconds to throw. He makes a great throw each time. It appears (in this video) he'd never really had to face any adversity or issues with his O-line, and the competition may have been decent in Cali, but it appears pretty weak in these highlights. Watching the rest, there were 2 or 3 more throws that were quality where he rolled out but even his technique was not that great, he had time on the only time he rolled out to set his feet and throw. His arm is certainly a weapon and he can air it out maybe even more so than Alex, but he's got all the time in the world there. That's not the current situation now and he's not been able to use any other of his attributes (his legs or pocket awareness) to avoid sacks, or get out of the pocket and extend plays. Also at one point in the highlight a defender literally beats his guy, runs into spencer and just sort of shoves him with two hands 50% without tackling him, then kind of just watches him throw it downfield.. doesn't even try to tackle him. Phil would eat that kid alive. o_O Overall after seeing Spencer play now, and watching this (small small sample size) he doesn't appear to be making leaps and bounds in his development or fundamentals because he looks very similar with a much worse o line on a different offense.

One last thing is they EXCLUSIVELY used spencer in a shotgun. not once did he line up under center... HMMM...

going back to Alex's his pocket collapses several times around 2.5-3 seconds, and he's able to make the read, throw a tight spiral with a quick release and even extend plays and make the throw on the run. I'm not a coach and never will be lol, but certainly seems like Alex's been through more adversity in his HS career and is used to having some pressure in his face where Petras hadn't. In a vacuum, I'd take Alex all day. But the different systems, different levels of comp, it's just fun and interesting to compare things.

Correct. We all need to take a break from the hype. Let things play out. There were some on here who wanted Petras to start over Stanley in 2019 as Petras' tape on throwing the deep ball was "unreal" or whatever other descriptor there is. The reality is it's different when everyone on the field is a great athlete. Some QB's can adjust to everything that goes on to be a productive player, others don't. Just like other positions.

Padilla was encouraging in his first meaningful playing time. Let's see what happens when the opponent has a chance to plan for him. He does some things that I really liked, the ability to throw the ball accurately over the LB's and in front of the safeties looked really good. He makes a decision and lets go of the ball. All good. If he starts making plays off a scramble, hide the kids Iowa would really have something.

Lol, I knew I'd get one of these, and I don't necessarily disagree with it. But I never said he's "great" or Spencer is "Sucky" it's just using the available film and dissecting fundamentals of his game. Look at Spencer's film and you see shades of the same player we are seeing at Iowa now. Certainly, there have been changes and improvements in the last few years under a new system/new coaches, and I think Spencer has done some good things. But the way our offense is functioning now, and how it's stalled out over several weeks, why not try and hype up our new QB and dissect some old film to give our fans something to talk about/get excited about? We all as Iowa fans should know as well as anyone that everything can come crashing back down as quickly as it hyped up, but it's a game and we should try to enjoy it as much as we can WHILE we can.

It's all in good fun. and I don't claim to be an einstein. just a dude who loves the Hawks and likes to talk about it with fellow Hawk fans :)

Not a bad take - but it's a choice each fan can make on their own. Padilla played the 14th ranked defense in the B1G right after Petras played 2 of the top 3 in the B1G over the last two weeks, then tried to play injured. There are tons of variables. I for one would like to get excited for this sold-out game before I attend this weekend that I'll be attending, and Padilla, whether he played a terrible defense or not, played fairly well, but he is certainly not in a system that allows him to carries us to the promised land. Victories are a culmination of several things and right now I think we all can agree if the O Line doesn't significantly improve we are in deep doo doo. That's on them and KF/BF and the offensive staff to work out.

Logically fallacy:

You: “Don’t label a guy great or sucky based on 1 year…or even worse 1 game.”

Also You: “I saw enough of Padilla to realize he can be productive. He’s not going to be Superman.”

VERDICT: you are labeling a guy after 1 game.

This. The "It's not the QB" people aren't even taking a wait and see approach to Alex in most cases. A lot of them are just writing him off.

FWIW before anyone comments on it, I understand the O-line is a huge problem. It isn't the only problem however. QB has played a big part in our struggles. And whether the stats or PFF or your drunk uncle agree or not, Alex had one of the best days for an Iowa QB this year.

Minnesota is 3rd in the conference in Total D, 3rd against the run and 5th against the pass. (Iowa is 4,2 &6.)

Looking at their roster the DL is dominated by Freshman and Sophomores. They're young up front but seem to be getting it done in the trenches...our OL better show up. BTW, we're last in the conference in sacks given up...Ouch.

Look, we have to acknowledge that what we were doing was not working. Something had to change, and like it or not, the QB position is probably the most important and easiest major change to make. It seemed to work against NW when it was given a chance. Time will tell if it does going forward. I just hope the Ferentz squad really gets behind it.

I like some things I saw from Padilla but let's not forget that the offense scored 17 points against a bad Northwestern defense. Minnesota's defense is much better and they have some DEs that could give you some trouble.

Peteas' high school video looked like he was Marino.
This kid seems money, and Georgia wanted him, but let him play a full game before the Deuce chants start.

Couldn't agree with you more. Idiotic is right.

As for Padilla, the reality is he wasn't good enough to beat out Petras the past two seasons. so while I'm all for him getting a shot now, I'm pumping the breaks on the over-the-top exuberance of him after playing less than one full game against a very bad opponent and we scored just 17 points.

Padilla getting the start is a step in the right direction. Now they have to use that to help some of what ails the O. Different sets and get him moving more to take advantage of the fact that he's not planted in the ground. A different qb with the same play calling and going into turtle mode when up by a score has a lower chance of success.

It took longer than it should have, but at least he's getting his shot to see what he can do. Hopefully the play calling will reflect the added mobility that he brings. And, although it's probably asking too much for a KF team, that they don't go into turtle mode if they get up by 10 points.

Or there will be a 10mph wind out of the North and the offense won’t have any effective pass attempts beyond 10 yards for two full quarters. (ie Colorado St and Penn St).

What I saw from Padilla that Petras hasn't shown is the confidence to make a throw within a window barely open and the feet constantly moving wether standing in the pocket or looking to extend the play. I also don't think we can say he's a savior based on putting up 17 points against the worst defense in the big 10. Missed that easy screen pass along with a few others. This team isn't making the playoffs and needs a miracle to win the west. Let's just hope he gains some confidence and we see a true competition for next year and we'll see if Father and Son truly will look to innovate and change the same out of date offense kirk has attempted to run for 20 years.

I like this.
