Cool story. The owners of the house bought the house 30 years ago, and the previous owner threw it in as part of the deal. When they went to sell the house, they decided to sell the large painting. Only then was it discovered it had been stolen during WW2. The previous owner of the house had been in the Swiss Army, and had emigrated to the US in 1947.
Lots and lots of artwork remains unaccounted from during the war. It isn't surprising that this painting found it's way out of Europe via Switzerland. They weren't too picky during the war.

Switzerland was neutral during the war, wasn't it? So I would doubt a Swiss soldier would have had opportunity to steal the painting. So, someone else, Nazi probably. And the size of it, makes one wonder how it got, not only taken, but shipped across the ocean.

Gold, artwork, and anything of value the Nazis had plundered poured across the border into Switzerland. As I said, the Swiss weren't picky.

Yeah, the Swiss got away with being neutral by dealing with the Nazis. I would think there was a lot of stuff looted by the Nazis that got taken home by the Allies at the end of the war. Plus the stuff taken home by GIs from the Axis countries.

The Swiss were often shoulder to shoulder with the Nazis when it came to banking, money, valuables and forging documents/ passports. The Swiss were “neutral” but they weren’t.

Long ago I met a guy who claimed his dad was a pilot who was instructed to quietly ferry a load of recovered artwork back to the US by a higher-up officer. That officer went down over the Atlantic on a separate plane and nobody knew what to do with the art his dad brought back so that crew divided it up. He said they had a bunch stashed away but we’re afraid to bring it out and obviously couldn’t sell it.

Couldn't it have been transported rolled up? It wouldn't need to be shipped in a 7 foot frame.

What is your theory?

No specific theory but if you ever have the chance take a walk through the British Museum in London. Truly one of the greatest if not the greatest museum in the world. Could be argued that everything there would have been lost if not for the British. Also doesn't change the fact that the British basically showed up and decided we like that and we are taking it with us. For every culture they encountered.

A painting in a museum doesn't mean they aquired it in any sort of fashion that is different than this painting landing in Connecticut

Ukrane's looked upon Nazi's as liberator's when Nazis invaded Russia back in 1941.....Ukranes HATE Russians....always have....hence this is the seed of the modern day problems between the two nations. The Nazis might have given the Ukranes the art as a reward for their initial capitulation.
Turns out Russians snd Ukrainians still hate each other.
