In a different thread I posed the question of why D's did not change the tax laws in 2021 or 2022 when they held control of the Executive and Legislative branches of government. I took one semester of government in high school. This video is everything I know about the legislative process.

I am looking for insights on why D's did not increase taxes in 2021 or 2022. From watching this video it seems they could have raised taxes if they had prioritized it. What am I missing?

They didn't have a clear majority. They had Sinema and Manchin trying to appease the conservative voters they needed. Sinema specifically opposed any increase in either individual or corporate taxes.

You're wondering why taxes weren't hiked during a pandemic recovery period, when we could easily have slid into an economic freefall?

Just exactly what kind of idiot are you?

The Dems were looking at raising top individual rates and the corporate tax in 2021. Sinema was an absolute no so they backed off. Unlike their counterparts, Dems can count votes and know when to call it a day.

Well there used to be debates to change votes, but apparently there are no open minds anymore

Got it! Thank you for helping me with my understanding. Ultimately, was looking to understand why the D's didn't increase taxes. The answer is they wanted to, but Sinema was a spoiler.

I appreciate the insight!

So, along the same lines, I understand the purpose of filibuster. What is the purpose of Reconciliation in the legislative process. Why is it needed and how is it different than other legislation?
