Pat McCaffery top 50 now

Wieskamp will be top 20 by the end of next year.

I am no expert on recruiting rankings, so I'm curious what makes you believe he'll surpass 30 other kids currently ranked ahead of him by next year?

Also, since we have two Top 50 players coming in the next two years, does that mean we can petition the NCAA to just hand us our Final Four trophy now? Whaaaat? What do you mean it doesn't work that way? That's what they tell us happens in Cyclone land. Oh, wait, I forgot, Iowa State is different because Prohm stresses defense--a secret most coaches in the country haven't caught on to yet as far as it's connection to winning. Uh oh, someone needs to get the memo to Fran.

*(For those of you not understanding the sarcasm, it's in response to several of our Cyclone "guests" who every time a positive post about a current or future Hawkeye is made have tried to hijack it with inane drivel about how much the Cyclones rule and the Hawkeyes drool. I'm just beating them to the punch so they can bugger off. Hopefully. Fingers crossed. Go away Cyclone trolls!!!!)

Possibly a result of his play at the Swish and Dish tourny?

Another Barnstormer, Patrick McCaffery, also turned some heads with his play. Not long after helping Iowa City West to a Class 4A state championship, the 6-foot-8 forward showed the same skill and ability that’s led both Rivals and Scout to label him a four-star prospect.

“McCaffery can do a little bit of everything on the basketball court,” wrote Brian Snow, a national recruiting analyst from Scout. “He is a very good passer who can run an offense, he shot the ball well, and despite not being strong, he is more than willing to mix it up on the glass and grab rebounds.

“Add in some blocked shots, and McCaffery showed the total package as a player all weekend long, and proved to be one of the more intriguing prospects in the 2019 class.”

Rankings of course fluctuate over the course of a high school kids career. Biggest change I've noticed, most explainable, is pundits don't like not seeing players. Injuries and missing AAU games can lose ground big time. For example Pemsl was a Rivals top 150 guy and pushing 4*, getting close, when he was hurt and eventually, out of the top 150 he went.

Connor dropped. I think it had to do with playing baseball and AAU basketball at the same time.

I don't know if I'd predict Wieskamp breaking into the top 20 in any service. I think last I look he was #43? Probably wrong. Thing is both he and Patrick have been in AAU a long time and are already well known.

The more likely thing is they get hurt and drop a lot, or another possibility is new "finds" take place and they get bumped a bit.

Doesn't matter, they are fine players and will be great Hawkeyes.

I'm sure someone could run some statistics on this, but it feels like players who commit early don't move up much in the final rankings.

Has Patrick actually committed yet? Seems everyone says he has but he states he hasnt. Perhpas things changed in the past few months

he hasn't. he will get more attention than Connor so it will be interesting to see if he considers other schools. I think the only threat would be if a school like UNC, KU, Duke, etc offered.

I'm sure things could change, but I recall seeing in a recent interview Patrick said no other schools were even trying to recruit him (likely because they think it's a waste of time).

Patrick McCaffery consider other schools? Does anyone really think Patrick would consider playing for another school. There is zero threat unless Fran is no longer the Iowa coach in 2019-2020.

Yes, I do. One of the things Patrick is going to take into consideration is how things go for Connor. If things go horrible for Connor, Patrick may very well look into other options.

I always take the earlier recruit rankings with a huge grain of salt. JR Angle comes to mind. If Patrick continues to play well, hopefully he'll stay up there. Lots of things can happen between now and then

I feel good about the love and support Hawkeye Nation's given Pat and his family in the past to beat out a Kansas. On another note, If Pat's rank holds as well as Wieskamp's, they'd be the top 2 rated players Iowa's landed since 2000 according to 247. In fact, with Cook, Connor and Garza we'll have 5 of the top 9 since 2000. JaBo and Moss were 4* ESPN, if considering that, 7 of top 11. It's looking better on paper at least!

This is I think the biggest obstacle to signing Patrick. I have no doubt that he wants to play for his dad, and with Connor. I just have this feeling that mama bear is keeping a close eye on how things go for Connor. Its understandable as parents that she and Fran will be very protective of Patrick given what Pats been through in his young life, and that Connor will be a test case for how well all parties can deal with the coaches son playing on the team.

How bad can it be...? He's not John Lickliter.
I'd think with 10 years on this site, you've seen plenty of instances of how players can get skewered here, any time they have a bad game, they play more than someone else's favorite etc.. This is especially true when it comes to the coaches offspring. How many posts have there already been about things like Connor will get preferential treatment because he's the coaches kid? Connor's game won't translate to Division one basketball. He won't be this, or he won't be that. If you were Patrick's parents, would you not evaluate closely, how things go for Connor next year?

No doubt. First poor game the guy had the long knives would be out. Look at the comments on Uhl or Williams or Ellingson or whoever. Hopefully most of the fan base would be supportive. And I'm not talking about criticism that is fair, but the comments about a player not being B1G caliber I'm sure will come up.

I think the best thing going for Connor/Patrick at this point is that we only lose 1 major contributor and are brining in 3 players. There aren't a ton of minutes to go around, so unless Fran is relying on Connor for big minutes (which is doubtful), his impact likely won't be huge either way (unless positive and earned).

While there certainly will be the nutjob faction out in force after every loss (and possibly every turnover or miss), I think our fans tend to be "softer" on freshmen, especially if they aren't in the top 6-7 of the rotation. With our core returning, I don't expect to see Connor in the top 7 in terms of minutes per game, and if it is, most likely it will be based on being earned through solid contributions.

I'd agree whole heartedly, if Connor plays major minutes next year, it will be because he's earned them. If thats the case, then he'll help solidify the one major weakness of this team going forward, quality depth in the backcourt. I'll choose to be hopeful.

Honestly, why would they give a $hit whats said on the internet?

Its beyond irrelevant.

It happens everywhere and it doesnt affect ANYTHING.

Ferentz kids got plenty if criticism, didnt matter one bit.
Your probably right of course, but I'm curious why Patrick hasn't committed yet. Originally his folks weren't going to let him commit until his freshman year. That was 6 months ago, and things have been very quite on that front, considering he's a highly ranked player with no other major offers.

rest assured the trolls will be out in full force with Connor. It will only take 1 game. Anything said on HR Basketball Fourm or the Lounge will have zero to do with where both boys play...IMO. Its all about their teammates & those close to them. Some posters will try to stur the pot...some already are.

he just finished his soph year...considering he has had almost zero contact from other schools that should pretty much lay it to rest. I love it...keep him guessing.

Who knows but this stuff on here doesnt matter enough to make a difference.

Agree

What a set of players coming through the Iowa ranks....Wieskamp, McCaffery, Green, Carton, Locure. There's some talent, next years state tournament will be fun to watch

I'll admit I was pleased to see T Kakert post on the swish and dish on the front page. I'm assuming that if Connor is still taking in part in these after season events that he serious about his basketball future at Iowa. Givin all the thoughts about baseball, and what decisions he might make, I think thats encouraging.

i hope they are not reading these message boards because then they would not see as many "knives."

what worries me is Twitter and Hawk fans and non-Hawk fans going after them

Are folks aware of the case of Cullen Neal? He transferred from New Mexico to Ole Miss with social media being part of the equation in the decision.

http://www.cbssports.com/college-ba...xico-cullen-neal-is-much-happier-at-ole-miss/

Fans got a hold of his phone number and left crazy messages. Message boards were filled with hate. It all led to a now infamous press conference during which Craig Neal was asked, last February, if the constant criticism was affecting his son.

"I'll just put it this way: when you have to change your phone number and you have to shut down your Twitter account and you have to change your Facebook account, it's sad," Craig Neal answered. "It's not fair that you get threats and you get death threats, and it's not right. So does it affect him? I think that kind of answers your question."

Clarify what you mean "If things go horrible for Connor." If he hates playing for his dad? The team sucks? The Iowa fans are mean to him and troll him on Twitter?

If Patrick was to consider one of the blue bloods, it would be because of the intrigue of playing for a blue blood. Very unlikely it would be because of something negative related to his dad, older brother, or Iowa.

As it is, I would say there is a 99.999999999% chance Patrick McCaffery wears Hawkeye black and gold in college and never gives a serious passing thought to playing for another school. Fran McCaffery would have to get fired or resign to take another job for Patrick to give serious consideration to another school (and of course if Fran was not head coach he undoubtedly would). But let's be real: Fran isn't leaving for another school any time soon, and short of him punching a kid in the face or telling a modern version of Connie Chung that "If rape is inevitable, relax and enjoy it." he'll be prowling the sidelines inside Carver Hawkeye Arena for the 2019-2020 season and beyond.
