Patrick McCaffery looked like 'legitimate top-25 player' at NBPA Top 100 Camp

Patrick McCaffery wrapped up his work at the National Basketball Players Association Top 100 Camp this past Saturday night.

He then took a 7 a.m. Sunday flight from Virginia to Charlotte, N.C., then from Charlotte to Cedar Rapids.

Now, he gets a few days at home before hopping on another long plane ride to Los Angeles for the Adidas Uprising Nations Training Camp.

Planes and camps. Airports and gyms.

That’s what summer looks like for the country’s best college basketball prospects. And so far, so good for McCaffery, who left his most prestigious showcase to date satisfied with his efforts.

"I fit in, for sure," McCaffery told Hawk Central. "I probably didn't play as well as I wanted to because I didn't get as many touches, or I wasn't able to do as much as I could have, probably. But I still think I had some really good games."

McCaffery averaged 5.9 points on 50 percent shooting (17-for-34) and 27 percent (4-for-15) from 3-point range in seven games with his team, the Knicks, which was coached by Iowa alum Ricky Davis. McCaffery’s first contest was his best, with 13 points, a pair of rebounds and an assist. He injured his right elbow on a dunk in his penultimate game, when he scored 11 points, and sat out his team’s final game Saturday night.

Eric Bossi, a national basketball analyst for Rivals, was on hand at the Top 100 Camp. He said McCaffery proved he belonged.

"Athletically and skill-wise and just overall ability, he looked more than at home and in his element," Bossi said. "Traditionally, the rising juniors at that camp struggle a little bit just because they’re younger and not as experienced at these things. But he did a good job. He ran the floor, he filled lanes, had a few really nice dunks, weaving through traffic. Certainly proved he’s a guy that if you leave him alone outside, he can make you pay for that.

"He looks like a legitimate top-25 player in the country at this point.”

Great news. If he had a different last name Hawk fans would be drooling over the idea that he is Iowa bound. The only thing I can figure out is some just take it for granted. Back to back years of elite prospects scheduled to join the young proven Hawkeyes have me as excited as when Lute was guiding the Hawks.

I wouldn't gauge an entire fan base on a slide of message board posters. Vast majority of Hawkeye fans are very excited for the next few years of hoops. Patrick has an upside/skill set that is really unique. It doesn't guarantee he'll be great, but his height, mobility and all-around skill give him the chance to be a very good player. The good part is he likely won't be needed to be the focal point of the team right away as a freshman. At that point, Iowa will will have Bohannon, Moss, Pemsl Baer, Cook (probably), Nunge, Garza, Wieskamp, etc. already on the roster.

+ A bunch.

I think Baer is gone when Patrick gets here, but I agree he won't need to be the focal point and likely won't be pressed into starting duty before he's ready for it.

J Bo, Moss, Joe, Cook, and Garza would be a tough line-up to crack. Conner, Nunge, Pemsl, and Kriener will also be demanding court time. Our depth has the potential to be our biggest asset if things don't change.

Well done sir, one of my favorite all time Sixers!

I remember him when he was in the ABA too, Denver Nuggets, back right before the merger when they had David Thompson and Dan Issel, Larry Brown coaching. I can still hear the McNichols Arena horn going off whenever my Kentucky Colonels played there, listening to the game out of WHAS 840 AM here in Iowa.

Great defender, like all time great. Great team player. Did ALL the dirty work type.

Say a rich man's Ryan Bowen.

One of my favorite nicknames when I was a youngster

Yep pretty safe to say Iowa will be getting a good one. I thought it was pretty funny the only call he got at the NBA camp was from Speraw while his roommates was ringing off the hook.

Yeah, I don't think any opposing coaches are buying this look around thing. They don't want Patrick McCaffery anywhere close to their other recruits.

Lets just hope Ricky didnt teach any of his team how to get a triple double.

Iowa alum....yeah, I would be suprised if he has more than a semester worth of classes passed.

I was surprised to hear Ricky Davis was an Iowa alum, I assumed he needed about 100 more semester hours.
