The high school basketball season is still young, but how is Patrick doing so far?

I saw he's in IC West's rotation and that team isn't lacking in talent on their roster.

- Does he look as good as advertised?
- Is he starting or coming off the bench?
- What position? SF of do they play a 4 guard lineup?

Iowa City West has played one amazingly good team (Apple Valley, MN) and three unranked, pretty average Iowa teams. Patrick had a high of five or six points against Waterloo West. Being only a freshman, he is working his way up the rotation and is in that 5-10 group after their four D1 kids. West hasn't played any good Iowa teams yet, but will after the holidays after January 12 when they meet Linn-Mar, Wahlert (twice), Cedar Falls and maybe a few others like Kennedy or Bettendorf.
They have another big out-of-state game against Maple Grove in the Timberwolves Classic in January. IC West has four starters 6-5 or above, so 6-5 Patrick plays at a wing. You can check Quik Stats Iowa for West's schedule, roster and individual statistics.

Patrick is 5th on the team in scoring thus far, averaging 4.3 points per game through 4 games. He's tied for third on the team with four offensive rebounds and tied for fourth on the team with 9 defensive rebounds. He also leads the team with 8 blocks. Rivals lists him as 6'6. Any idea how tall he could grow?

Connor leads the team averaging 17.5 points per game and 21 total assists.

I have never seen Patrick play live but I envision him being a more athletic version of Uthoff. Perhaps he ends up in the 6'8 range? A good ball handler and an above average athlete who can play the 2 or 3? Is that accurate?

Uthoff is a ridiculously coordinated and talented athlete for a player his size. His lone weakness right now is he doesn't have the confidence or quite the physicality to take it near the rim as much as he should. Two years ago I said JU was the best NBA prospect on the team and 2 of those players were drafted. I'm skeptical when someone thinks PMac is projected to be a more athetic Uthoff. You don't necessarily need to be an outstanding athlete to score a lot (paging Jimmer Fredette), but you do in order to play defense as effectively as JU.

Uthoff is coordinated now, but he's also a 5th year senior. When I saw him as a high school senior, he definitely wasn't.

Assuming Iowa City West is in the State Tourney this year, I can't wait to see them!

I guess I poorly worded that. I agree that Uthoff is extremely talented and coordinated. He is athletic, but how athletic is another question. He can play in the NBA, but he is far from a superstar. Most mock drafts have him in the second round, if at all. See nbadraft.net.

I still think Pat displays great athletic ability for his age (probably ahead of where Uthoff was in high school). He has a similar frame in that he is long and lean. I am not sure of his shooting skills at this stage as I have only seen video of Patrick. Can anyone give a more detailed description of those who have seen him play?

Try this:

Go to the Podcast with the Barnstormers coaches on August 20th. You'll get more than you asked for. Also the Podcasts before the exhibition game loss (Adam Haluska) and Jess Settles talking about the PTL and newcomers are worth a listen.

Edit to add, the discussion on Patrick is toward the end, but I wouldn't suggest skipping ahead.

Patrick is a better shooter with better perimeter skills than Uthoff at this stage. I would not classify Patrick as being more athletic, maybe comparable. Uthoff was very athletic and coordinated by the time he was a jr/sr in high school.

Haven't seen Patrick yet, but I will. I saw Uthoff several times in high school, and he was an exceptional shooter, even as a sophomore. Didn't play on a team nearly as loaded as West Iowa City.

Ok, someone get this on the internet, "Patrick McCaffery better than Jarrod Uthoff and he's only in 9th grade." I think I got the gist of this right?
