Paul Mulcahy

I don't know if this is the case with Mulcahy, but sometimes we forget that they do have to be taking classes. Mulcahy graduated from Rutgers this spring and maybe it's as simple as Rutgers doesn't have the graduate degree program that he wants to pursue.

Not all athletes are there just for athletics.

It's possible. 🤷‍♂️

He had a bad second half last year, after being really good. He isn't that athletic, but he knows a lot of tricks. Seems strange that he is transferring, because he isn't likely to be going to a top team.

You tell 'em, Ferret Face!!

And I agree with you. I'd take Mulcahy--tough kid. He can leave the headband in Piscataway though.

Any relation to Father Mulcahy?

@MrsScrew what is going on here?
There is a lot to unpack, and you can say the perfect storm hit Rutgers right after the season. Mawot Mag, Cliff Omoruyi, Cam Spencer, and Paul Mulcahy were approached with NIL deals. Spencer and Mulcahy stated they would return to Rutgers for their last season. Meanwhile, recently departed assistant coach Karl Hobbs (to Ga. Tech) reached back to Rutgers and tried to muddy the waters.

First, Hobbs got a commitment (his recruit) to de-commit from Rutgers just before signing day with the idea of the recruit following him to Ga. Tech. Also, Hobbs tried to convince Mag to join him at Ga. Tech. Rutgers matched the NIL offer for Mag. Next came word Omoruyi had been tampered with even though he was still in the draft. Omoruyi hadn't officially withdrawn from the draft, but Rutgers knew he was offered several NIL deals to transfer. Once Oromuyi withdrew from the draft, Rutgers put together a bigger NIL deal to retain Omoruyi.

Once the transfer (undergrad) portal closed, Rutgers thought its roster was set. Cam Spencer's brother (Northwestern/pro ball overseas) acted as a middleman through his agent and let Cam know the transfer market for grads was paying even more than the undergrad market. Fans weren't as upset with Cam for leaving as much as not allowing Rutgers a chance to match. Cam's leaving hurts, but fans understood he doesn't have as much sweat equity invested into Rutgers as Omoruyi, Mag, or Mulcahy, so they were cutting him slack.

This leads to Mulcahy leaving. Mulcahy attended Rutgers' sponsored events and practiced at the facilities until a few hours before announcing his decision to transfer. When Mulcahy saw Cam receive $200K, it opened his eyes. It made his decision easier, too, since he was unhappy with Pikiell moving him to SF for next season. Mulcahy wants to remain the starting PG.

Schools we know that have contacted Paul are ND, Indiana, Pitt, Gonzaga, and Illinois. ND is the only one we know that has offered Paul a deal in that neighborhood of $200K. If you saw some of Paul's social media posts, he has become very religious, and it's fitting that ND is the school out front.

Gonzaga is a Jesuit school, so why not them?

Thanks for the info you have provided.

Quick update:
Hearing Gonzaga and ND are the front-runners

Gonzaga was initially out because of distance, but that may not be the case now.

Also, hearing Mulcahy is having second thoughts about transferring, but Rutgers may have closed the door on his return. IMO, Pikiell doesn't seem like the type to be bitter, but who knows?

I don't know what's true anymore.

as mentioned here, he had a pretty bad second half of the season. My understanding is there were some personal things going on in his life that distracted him. He tried for the NBA...didn't make it.
leading us to:
1. he realized that he was going to be replaced by some of the talent coming in this year or
2. our (that's a collective NCAA fan "our") nemesis, NIL, came into play and he's being offered big $ to go somewhere else.

Both Paul & Cam waiting until the portal closed sucks for RU. Cam is heading to UConn and Paul is yet to be picked up, although rumors have ND, Kentucky, and a couple of others looking at him.

@cubuffsdoug made some excellent points in his post

he did seem to find religion this past season, his first comments post games were always bible quotes and thanks to God before he would start answering questions.

One of the nicer things he did at the end of the season: he took his NIL money and gave restaurant gift cards to all of the security guards, band members, and student MBB managers.

I’m liking Mulcahy a lot better after reading those last two paragraphs.

200K for an 8 pt a game player. And he's not putting any team "over the top." Nice player but nowhere near an impact player. I guess however it only takes one school to think you're worth it.
