I own 5 computers myself, but only one is spec'd good - yet I bought it 7 years ago. Quad core Intel, 8 gig ram, etc. Best off the shelf you could buy in 2009, still works perfect. The other four are light duty in use and don't need nearly the specs.

I got hard drive space covered though. I rock 10TB at home, with 10 TB backup for it.

Closing in on 600 HD movies (7 to 15 gigs each), a decade of Iowa football in HD (15 to 20 gigs each) with a lot of prior years in SD too, many HD TV shows' entire catalogs, and 30 years of VHS, DVD, LP and CD etc ripped or dubbed over. All video perfectly edited to the frame, no commercials at all.

I don't like format changes, chasing 4k let alone 1080p, nor DVR's, nor paying for streaming services or iTunes etc. When mp3 and blue ray came out, I said I'm done chasing formats, and began building my network.

Still buy CD's for collection building, but that's it. DTV/OTA provides my video recording sources.

My MBP is a recent with with i7, with 8 GB RAM and 500 GB SSD. Yes, you'l have to drop the POS HP or Dell. Backlit KB, etc. are awesome. Form factor and speed work for me.

My backlit kbs are mechanical browns and reds. Logitech and Corsair strafe

Some cheap Asus laptop. 700GB HD, I think 8GB ram. It does Microsoft office, email, and the internet for HROT and pron. So I'm set.
