House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has demanded that acting defense secretary Christopher C. Miller immediately halt efforts to install Michael Ellis, a former GOP operative, as the lead lawyer for the National Security Administration.
In a letter to Miller sent late Sunday, Pelosi questioned the timing of the move to place Ellis as the NSA’s general counsel, within 72 hours of the Biden-Harris administration taking over, as an attempt to “burrow” a Trump loyalist into a highly sensitive intelligence position.
Pelosi also accused Ellis of having been selected over much more qualified candidates and of having been involved in “disqualifying” activities, including shielding information about Trump’s July 2019 call with the president of Ukraine.
“The NSA General Counsel, which involves supervising many intelligence community attorneys and interacting with intelligence agencies, is a highly sensitive career position for which candidates are selected, based on merit and free from political influence,” Pelosi wrote.
“If Mr. Ellis did go through the traditional civil service hiring process, I request a detailed account of that process, to understand how someone with his credentials was chosen over other qualified candidates,” she continued.
