Heaven, Iowa
Iowa went to IU 7 days ago and won by 26.

PSU went to IU today and won by 5. I did not see the game. How did IU stay so close?

Where will Iowa have advantages in this game?

Who wins and why?

Will home field be all the difference?

I didn't see the game today either, but from what I have seen of PSU up to this point in previous games:

Home field might matter, although Iowa hasn't been phased much road crowds yet. Then again, they really haven't played on the road where the home fans actually show up either so you have to tilt the scale towards it making at least some difference in the game.

Penn State's defense isn't as good as Iowa's.

We have lost either 4 or 5 straight to PSU since Joe Pa was forced out.

PSU has athletes and will play a style that spreads us out and works on us in space for match ups. That’s not the type of game we like. Their QB can make plays with his arm and feet which is tough on our D historically.

I expect a challenging game. We have to get points early this time to get some momentum going. Don’t want to play from behind.

McSorely has weapons and you have to contain the QB. If you let him scramble and make a throw on the run we are screwed.

PSU defense is young but Athletic. Need to be balanced next week and win special teams.

Iowa gonna have to play 4 quarters of flawless football to get the W

We have to avoid the comparative numbers game. Teams are vastly different in their units and schemes. Teams have "bad days". Winning by "x" v. another team winning by "y" does not create a viable equation to figure "z".

That being said, I feel like Iowa was moved back all game when their O-line faced PSUs d-line. If not for Wadley making something out of nothing on a few occasions, that game is a Wisconsinesque offensive no show last year.

Very simply, if Iowa's O-line does its job well, we win. I don't believe our defense has to do much more than be themselves.

I totally disagree. They need to treat this like they did the OSU game last year when they forced Barrett to run constantly and pounded and pounded him. Wore him out, made him make mistakes. McSorley can run, but that is not what they want to do. If you're going to make them one dimensional, you make him keep on all zone reads and pound him, rush him hard on the outside on passing downs with Hesse hawking up the middle and beat on him.

True, but this PSU doesn't appear nearly as good as last year, and this Iowa team is certainly better then last, at least on offense, and the DL. Yes, we had the Kinnick magic going last year, but I like the vibe of this team. Hawks by 10 in unhappy valley........

They are missing linebackers and TE from last year, defense is vulnerable to He's. The missing experience on defense is more of a problem than being without Barkley.

Key is to not turn the ball over and get up early. I think we should win this game pretty easily. Our defense will travel. Penn State doesn’t really look dangerous on offense and they are a second-tier defense in the Big Ten IMO

If you watched the games today you'll gladly take playing PS on the road over Purdue. We will win at PS in my opinion but Purdue is going to be a tough out. Their QB is outstanding. He never seemed to take a sack. Very quick to see any sacks coming and just threw the ball away. I was very impressed with their whole team. I'm thinking it's either us or them in the B1G playoff. Michigan is going to be a tough out on the other side...Ohio State sucks and will lose at least one or two more games....

The trip to Penn State is a long, tiresome one. Seemed like 2 years ago they showed up with jet lag.

If we are rested and show up with our A game, I like our chances.

I forget; where do they fly in to? and then how long is the bus ride to the hotel?

and people bitch about having to fly into CR with a 20 min drive to IC

Indiana rushed for 224 v PSU. Only 67 v Iowa.

I really like the Hawks chances if they can run for 175- 200. Iowa's passing game is unpredictable in a good way (and sometimes in a bad way) - many different receivers and different routes.

Should be fun!

As I mentioned before we have not beaten PSU since Joe Pa and I’m not sure we’ve been all that close out there in the post Joe Pa era.

This looks to be the most beatable PSU team in this stretch but talking and doing are 2 different things. Need to get things going quickly in this game like we did at Minny & Indiana.

Remember that game at PSU where we got that huge lead and everybody left and then PSU had a massive comeback and they would not let fans back in? i think it went to OT and most of the stadium was empty!

Agree that containing McButtSorley is critical. Fortunately or DE’s have been doing that all year. Wonder if we might see more of the 4-2-5 as well

That's what people said about Indiana. And it's what people said about Ohio State last year. Iowa has a few athletes of its own and, based on the season so far, is a better football team than PSU. Given that, I like Iowa's chances.

PSU is gettable this year. Indiana had multiple chances to win that game yesterday but couldn't get out of their own way. They were running up the middle pretty well on the PSU defense. Just made too many mistakes....bad turnovers and dumb penalties.

Really excited for this game.

The key in my mind is for Stanley not to have a bonehead pick that the defense doesn’t even have to make a play on because it’s just gifted it to them. Turnovers might happen but they can’t be silly ones that make you go “what in the h*** was that”

Contain Mcsorley and put him on his ass a few times

Run the ball like we did vs Maryland.

Of course Penn State is not the offensive team it was with Barkley.. that being said Trace McWhatisname is a good competitor and athlete.. it would be nice to be able to keep trace on the side line watching.. Attack early, jump out to a lead then control the ball and play tough D up front and contain Trace Iowa turns Happy Valley into Sad Valley

We have to keep McSoreloser in the pocket and make him throw the ball when he doesn't want to. This is easier said than done.

Comes down to how we play mcsorely.

+/- 2 sacks
+/- 3 deflected passes
+/- 30 yards mcsorely rushing

Win 2/3 of the above and I like our chances.

I hope McSorley runs for a 100 yds. (and the RB none) and we flush him every pass play so he can't stand in the pocket and throw down field and we hit him 40 times. If we do that, we will win easily. I'm telling you right now, on passing downs they are going to flush him to Hesse in the middle if our DE's don't get to him. And I'll repeat what I said before, that they will have the unblocked DE (there always is one in zone read) attack the RB on all read options (like they did against OSU last year) forcing McSorley to run into our interior and pound him. It wouldn't surprise me if we didn't knock him out of the game at some point. His antics at the end of last year's game has made him even more 'unpopular' with our players. You should hear Kulick talk about him on their podcast.

I hope for good weather. It is a grass field and that I have bad memories of the Hawks trying to adjust to them the past 10 years or so. Iowa's D line is again the key to the game and they have been money all but one game this year. PSU's O line<Wiscy's line. I expect to see a lot of the package where Hesse goes inside and AJE is on the edge. Let AJE and Golston chase McSorley around. I really believe the Hawks can compete with any team in the B1G right now.

At this point in the season I do believe Iowa is a better and more complete team than Penn St. One thing Iowa needs to do is continue doing what they do well on defense. Play smart, keep everything infront of them, and contain McSorely. If Iowa is able to contain him in the pocket and make Penn St. beat them in the air, we have a good chance of winning. Secondly, limit mistakes. In Iowa's big game this year against Wisconsin they made some really uncharacteristic mistakes on offense and special teams. If Iowa can shore up these two things, I think they walk away with a win.

The frosh cbs have played well but going into the next two weeks, a healthy Hankins could come in handy.

Listened to the Penn state game on the way home. Sounded like Indiana got a lot of pressure on McSorely. I am guessing Indiana blitzed quite a bit like they did to us, but Penn States biggest plays were McSorley scrambling for first downs.

I would think we can get more pressure on him with our front 4 and maybe have a spy to prevent him from taking off.
