Penn State Writers Expect a Loss

I don't expect a loss from Penn State but I do expect us to be in position to win and pull it out. Sounds like the weather should be downright awful so I'm not sure who has the advantage. Hope to be pleasantly surprised by a Hawk team that gets a big win, but not sure.

After reading the Pennlive reporters picks, I suddenly feel much better about Penn State's chances.

agreed...they all picked PSU to beat MSU and destroy Indiana.

honestly, I have zero confidence in PSU.....but Vegas starting us off as a 6pt favorite is telling. who wouldn't jump on Iowa at +6 with how each teams have played lately? that's why I think PSU will win. everyone is jumping on Iowa. Vegas always wins.

oh yeah...we're at home too. that always helps.

I see Penn State as a team with a high powered offense that has had far too many self-induced drive ending miscues. If they get the little things cleaned up, they will be a difficult team to beat this weekend.

Well, Vegas has been very wrong about Iowa all year long. Just check the spreads and you'll see that Iowa has beaten most of them (with the exception being the Wisconsin game) and in many cases by a lot.

I've watched a bit of PSU this year and you are a very different team without Saquon Barkley. The comeback win against App State, the too close for comfort win against Indiana, and the loss to Michigan State at home (whom I don't think is a very good team) certainly raises an eyebrow for me. I have a lot of confidence in Iowa in this game and if you want to win some money bet against your team.

This year's PSU sounds like the type of team we typically feast on ... error prone and unable to consistently "earn" points by sustaining long drives. Their offense will have to avoid misstakes, which sounds like a tall order. If our "bad" offense (not the offense we saw at Minny and Indy) shows up with turnovers, 3 and outs, etc., then it could be a rough day. If the "good" offense, we should win comfortably.

I'll speak more on this from Iowa's perspective in another post, but Penn State is somehow both more vulnerable than last year, as we figured since they're missing Barkley, but also because their defense has been surprisingly porous in almost every game this year, and yet they are also more explosive than last year in terms of hitting big plays and being able to put points up in a hurry, especially in the 4th qtr once they go 2 minute offense at the start of the 4th......A lot of it has to do with McSorely, yes, but also the emergence of a few other guys for them. They're definitely a feast or famine team, but their famines, so far, have not caused them to starve themselves into bad losses.

Let's change that on Saturday.

it's hard to disagree with any of this....hence, i think the Vegas line is surprising. I thought we'd be more of a 2-3pt fav.

I'm sure it's not inconceivable to you to see PSU winning by 6+

Vegas is hoping everyone feels like you....if you want easy money, bet on Iowa.

Remember, Vegas spreads have to do with betting and their expectations of betters actions. Maybe they need more money bet on the Hawks.

PSU is a really good team. The Hawks are a really good team. Neither team, nor their fan bases, should "expect" to win. But, however it goes, one teams fans base is going to be a dumpster fire.

Nope. Don't bet on Iowa. Bet heavily on Penn State. The bigger the favorite, the funner it is when they lose. :D

yeah, I don't know. from an outsider's perspective (non Iowa/PSU fan)....you simply watch these 2 teams play the last couple weeks, who in the right mind wouldn't be optimistic on Iowa covering at +6?...if not winning outright? but hey...what do i know? it's just a theory.

i definitely don't expect PSU to win lol

Optimistic is good. Hey, you can even expect to win!

But, if the Hawks lose, the "fans" on this board are going to lose their sh*t.

Big game for both teams. Fully expect PSU to take a good lead until Iowa's defense makes adjustments and calms down. The rest depends on Stanley making plays (or not), and BF's play calling in the red zone. If Iowa can play without bad turnovers, they will have a chance to win it.

McSorely has totally owned us the last two years

This is where I'm at. Iowa has to prove it can defend well against a guy who can run/pass and who also has skilled weapons around him. Yes, Sanders is not Barkley, but he is good. I'm semi-concerned that PSU will go with the young WR's and dump the veterans who have been dropping passes (they have 21 drops through 7 games).

Indiana had PSU in serious trouble until McSorley just started making plays running for first downs. I would like to think Iowa's defense is way more capable than Indiana, but Hawks have to actually go out and do it.

Just need one guy to keep him upright and a second to deliver the blow. All legal like of course.

One of my favorite forum occurrences is when Iowa has a game that’s supposed to a loss per Vegas. And plenty of fans will predict it that way. And then it happens and the same people freak out afterwards. We suck! No wins the rest of the year! Ferentz laughs all the way to the bank! Fire all of Iowa City!

My favorite is, "This one's on the coaches", like somehow, the coaches aren't responsible for other games or something like that.

Indiana was pretty helpful with their "refuse to win" play.

PSU has 21 drops?? The Hawks have had their troubles catching ball in recent years (not so much this year), but have they ever had 21 drops? Gad.

Hoping the Hawks keep it close, but ultimately I think too much mcsorely does them in.

And yet the Hawkeyes were one play—the final play away from winning last year’s game.

It takes more than one great player to beat Iowa. No Saquon. We will see.

This feels like Iowa- Michigan 2002.

Iowa 34-9.
While I agree that the lead up to this game has a similar feel...
Weather for that 02 game - chilly, but not rainy (maybe it rained earlier in the day?)
Weather for this Saturday - downright yucky (low 40s and raining)
I'd love to see a blowout, but I don't think we get one on a soggy field with a wet ball.

I've never. NEVER. Seen Hawkeye fans this confident about a:

1) Road game
2) In front of 110,000 hostile fans
3) To a team that has had our number of late
4) While we're an underdog
5) Oh and the weather is crappy

The Hawkeye fan outlook on this one makes little sense to me. I see the reasons for the optimism and I want to believe it, but my gosh the posters here are going to absolutely lose their sh1t if Iowa loses.

I'm with you in that I understand the signs are encouraging as Iowa has looked solid post wiscy and psu hasn't looked stellar , particularly the msu game.

But it's at psu's house against the best qb in the league who is a skilled runner, which the Hawks regularly struggle with figuring out.

Optimism is reasonable. Expecting a win is not.

I think most Iowa fans are cautiously optimistic about the team's chances in Beaver this year based on what they've seen. Past experience has taught us that expecting to win at PSU is a fool's thought. I do believe the team and our coaches will have the team ready to go with a solid gameplan in hand. The rest is just execution.

If Iowa loses, I certainly won't lose my sh!t as you said, I'll tip my hat to the Nittany Lions and move on, there's no shame in losing on the road in Happy Valley. And there's still a lot of football games to come afterwards.
