we had this driver's ed teacher who was telling us about merging { and this is Ottumwa, early 1980's} and anyway he was saying to punch it, gun it. he was basically telling us to speed, break the speed limit, who cares get moving. of course we were driving on hwy 34 between ottumwa and albia, so I had no clue what he meant. no cars for 5 miles around.

so basically I moved to tx and I see what he meant now. go to Oklahoma city sometime, every time I'm there somebody merges badly and almost causes me to wreck. probably from a small town around there. ada or ponca city. ha ha

I agree completely. It's really something here in Texas... I'm fairly certain all you have to do to get a driver's license here is state your intent.

People who don't understand that it is their responsibility to get up to speed and merge in should stay off major roads.

the good news is usually there's a shoulder so if you go out there and there's a semi truck not letting you merge, usually you can just drive on the shoulder for miles after the merge lane ended. merge later. if there's not a fat chick dancing on the semi truck

Ah yes, Texans consider the shoulder simply another lane. They really do not consider it necessary to be merged before the merge lane ends, and will use the shoulder for a ridiculous distance, creating a three-wide in two lanes situation.

How about slowing down to turn left on a two lane highway, and having cars that were behind you fly past you on the shoulder to the right, never even thinking about easing off the gas the entire time.... Texans consider a car slowing in front of them merely an obstacle to get around, like life is a NASCAR race. The concept of slowing down to wait, and possibly even stopping, does not exist here.

I don't like the stoppers, but all these youngsters that don't bother to slip into a spot. Just come over and assume everyone will get out of their way....I want to kill them.

For pure comedy or rage, get onto I-80 west bound from the 1st Ave. ramp between the hours of 2 and 6. You will not be disappointed. With all of the tankers leaving the terminal, the hospital patients/visitors from small town Iowa, and the general volume of traffic on 80 it never fails to make me laugh or scream.

I agree, and people with an open lane to the left who refuse to get over so someone can merge should also be tossed off the road.

The German autobahn roads are road rage free, and have speed limits in places where it's reasonable, that people follow. It's amazing and feels so much safer than our interstates. Their roads are also much nicer than ours, but having no speed limit in long stretches of road really solves a lot of the issues experienced on the roads.
