Perkins 3 Point Shot

Can Tony take his 3 point shot to a level where he is a consistent threat? I think he can based on his High School career. I believe that, if he is able to have a consistent long range shot, he could be a high level player for the Hawks and have a great career.

I realize that being a decent shooter in HS does not mean it will translate to D1...but I would be interested in discussion after people view that video link.

I don’t know about this last recruiting class, Perry. I hope I’m totally wrong. But I just wonder if this is going to be one of those faceless groups in 3 years! You know the ones who came in, stayed a year or two, and then bailed out. I won’t name specific kids... I don’t like doing that ... Hawks Gods, please make me wrong! 🥃🙏🥃

He needs minutes to showcase what he can do. IMO, Perkins appears to have the drive to be a winner. He will find a way, whether that is getting a steal, hitting a three, scraping for a board or getting a block to will his team to victory. He’s one of those players who will elevate the play of his teammates from the way he plays.

I'm going to go on record as saying, less the Murray twins, the recruiting Ckass of 2020 will be a big "blah".

Hopefully I am wrong. But I highly doubt it.

What? One of the lowest rated pair of these recruits (the Murrays) already has played substantial minutes and was on the All-B1G Freshmen team. The others played behind seasoned vets. They all contributed, with Kris M and Big O much less so because of who they were playing behind. I think if anything the future is very bright for this class. They have overachieved to date if anything.

He should've been on the court 15 mins a game! Aggressive defender, scrappy hustler. Can score by driving or shooting, really like his game and what he will bring and would've brought to the team last year.

Here’s my opinion which combined with about $5. will get you a coffee at Starbucks.
It probably was difficult to decide who and when to play the Freshman. They had abilities the starting 5 didn’t have but when you’re starters are ranked # 8 or above in the nation for nearly the whole season you fall back on playing the experience you have with your starters and blend in your freshman when you’re comfortably in the lead in a game. Pre -B1G the freshman played a fair amount( not enough IMO) but in the B1G no lead was ever comfortable , so Fran danced with the guys that he knew. Now there became one player he couldn’t ignore ( Keegan) , in a position of need. Particularly after Jack was done. I understand his thinking and can’t find fault with it but come the tourney with so many players playing hurt if he’d lost a few more games in the B1G but had gotten the Freshman more experience there’s a chance they’d have fared better in the tournament playing them more instead of playing guys that were hurt. Maybe not though, unfortunately we’ll have to wait until next season where if we win the B1G we’ll all be saying ah what might have been. Well that’s all I got until next season. I’m all in as these guys gave it all they had.

Perkins and the rest of the class, except Big O, are easily Fran's most athletic class. Perkins could be a good all-round scorer, but I am not yet sure about the consistency of his outside shot. He seems to have a very consistent release in the video, but it isn't very high and he takes a while to sort of wind up before the release. His athleticism and driving ability allowed him to get open shots in HS that might not be nearly as open. I think Tony has a lot of upside on both ends.

I am almost more intrigued by Ulis, who we didn't get to see as much. He seemed to be holding back to play under control, so I am not sure how quick/athletic he is, or how well he can shoot. At the end of games, he always seemed to have some assists in just a few minutes of play, but seldom took shots. This entire class has tremendous upside IMO, but for it to be a complete class, Big O has to transform his body and gain a lot of quickness. I love the Murray twins upside, which has been a total surprise to me.

I am with you on Ulis.....I did watch some of his HS and a little AAU video...He is just a heady player, very smart, and plays under control. I think his athleticism is average for a B10 PG and I think his shot is pretty good, I just think he is very judicious about when he takes it. I am guessing that during his play this year when he came off of the bench for limited minutes he spent his time trying to attend to his responsibilities as a PG on both ends of the court and deferred to the vets when it came to shooting. I think Fran would call him a "no mistake" guy. I think that he is a very different player than Joe T....almost opposites in terms of being under control, size for a PG, etc.....mostly in terms of style of play. That said, I think having the two of them is a great combo at PG..

He reminds me of BJ to a degree. He's good at many things and plays under control as you stated. He's athletic but not a dominant athlete.

My opinion...... ad $5 and it still won't get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks. I think the class has some really good pieces and I like their potential. The weight room will decide how good they are next year.

Keegan- I would say will be the best player on the team next year. He has the athletic ability and decision making that will really show up the more he is depended on.

BIG O- If he can get in better basketball shape and provide 15 minutes a game next year, that would be a win for Iowa. I see him more helping on the Defensive side with 3-4 fouls a game to give as the biggest help. Iowa needs another big man for a year or two that can start ahead of him. He needs time obviously to anyone, but I can see a role for him that would be pretty key on the defensive end.

Ulis-Perkins- If one of them can somewhat breakout next year, that's a win also. Either one. We need some quickness on defense up front to keep drives from happening.

PMAC- Find the weight room and his potential is really high for Iowa's style of play. He could be the slasher we are all looking for. His time will depend on his ability to defend the 3 or 4 position on the other team. He HAS to gain some good weight.

Kris M.- I don't think we know what he is capable of yet, but I think he could really help with outside shooting and also with rebounding. I see him is that guy who hits a few big shots a game and hustles get loose balls. I also think he is a very capable passer. He may be a really good reserve next year. I think his defense will decide how many minutes he gets.

Does anyone outside of the program really know if Perkins is a good shooter or not? I'm not going to judge his shooting ability based on his limited minutes.

Do you think Sandfort has a role next season?

That's the twenty-four dollar question, isn't it? Other then those that have actually watched many Iowa practices, from outside of the team parameters, no one knows how good our freshmen are, except for Keegan and Patrick. Fran basically kept a lid on Perkins, Ulis, and Kris.
The whole team concept was about Luka and when our young players were inserted into the game they played defense, passed the ball around and occasionally drove to the basket, limiting our bench to just bodies.
I guess we all have to wait until November to get a look see for ourselves.
Hope springs eternal...

We may not score as much as this past season, but someone has to fill the 41 point hole (56 points if Joe W leaves) that Luka, JBo and Nunge have left. In other words, there are plenty of minutes and lots of shots available to those willing and able to take them. Hopefully the young guys are ready and McCaffery finds them some help.

Not holding my breath...while other Big Ten Teams are reloading using the Portal or a Grad Transfer, Iowa is methodically waiting to pick up another nothing burger.
Fran may know talent at the high school level but he refuses to ad talent to his team if it means one of his prized recruits get pushed to the bench.
If this statement is out of bounds, that please correct me if you have evidence to the contrary. I've seen none in the last 11 years...

Well, I've seen him play one time on tv during the last years state tournament, my opinion means little to nothing. That said, I can see why he is so highly thought of, but I think it would do him ALOT of good to red shirt this year. He could use the extra weight room time and getting some good time in the gym with D1 basketball players. I would hate to see him sit on the bench for an entire year, play sparingly and burn a year with getting very little additional experience. I don't think he should be in a hurry to get on the court at this point.

Again correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Payton already taller and heavier the Weezy? Lot's of players have become stronger during an off season of weight lifting and Payton didn't look like a wimp to me by any means.

It’s not out of bounds. He is fiercely loyal to his players, meaning the ones he spends a lot of time developing relationships with. I can see Fran using the portal as a gap filler but not so much as a complete roster overhaul like some teams. For better or worse, that’s his strategy.

It doesn't take much to drive through an empty lane
Instead of worrying about the three point shot, why can't Iowa identify at least a little bit with a dribble drive to the hoop game? Goodness knows it works for other teams against us.,

It doesn't take much to drive through an empty lane
That was one thing that I was happy about when Ahron and Tony were on the court, along with the rest of the freshmen they were not hesitant to drive for a layup even if they were fouled or had their shot blocked.
Now if only we can get this next years team to at least try to take charges. It's apart of the game and can effect the out come as much as a block or steal.
Evidently, it is one defensive strategy that Fran and his coaching staff refuse to teach....

Iowa bball fan here. I’m confused. What is this dibble drive you speak of?

Being loyal to your players is fine, but at the expense of not improving your team ?

If Tony develops a consistent 3-point shot by the beginning of next season - and assuming Joe W. leaves and everyone's healthy - I could see Tony starting along with CJ on the wings.

Tony is great at taking it to the rim, and over time, his 3 pt shot will come and maybe more often. Based on Fran's philosophy of all the players being able to hit the 3, it's only a matter of time. I'm impressed by his play and he'll be a major contributor, I'm sure.

I do. He can score and he's a very heady player. He will get some minutes. Not a huge number but he's too good not to.
Can he do anything off the bounce or is he a spot up shooter? I realize there will be a big adjustment period but Fran needs some aggressive scorers who can create their own shots. It has taken JW 3 years to turn the corner in this department. I hope he is more like JW than Ellingson or Fleming.

He's a player. Off the dribble, moving without the ball, or rip and drive, he has that game. Quick, decisive shooter at the HS level that I hope translates to college.

Not a lot of defense on the highlight videos though so I have no idea how his lateral movement is on defense. :)

Anyone not excited about Perkins, Ulis and the Murrays doesn't know how to spot talent.

I spot talent nicely. I am just saying that an Iowa team with this class as it's lead dogs isn't going to be a top tier B1G team. They'll be a 6-9 seed at best. Bookmark this post.

And it's hard to fault a coach for that.
