The article says the hawks run on first down 65% of the time but have the worst avg per those rushes in the Big at 2.98 yards per play. Running into a brick wall kind of thing.

While the article notes Petras doing well throwing on first downs as shown below. Maybe Kirk should go early 1960's Hayden Fry with SMU and throw the ball about 80% of the time like he did at MIch back then.

"An article this week in The Athletic pointed out that Iowa runs the ball on first down 65% of the time yet easily ranks last in the Big Ten with 2.98 yards per carry on first down. At the same time, Petras is 30-for-42 passing (71%) for 383 yards on first down.

So instead of run, run, pass, punt.......it should be pass, run, run, punt???

F*** it, I'm down for something different.

And on jet sweeps "That aforementioned Athletic article showed that Iowa is averaging 10.5 yards per carry and 9.8 yards per pass when using jet motion (seven runs, six passes).". Nice averages

Petras' worst flaw is inconsistency which is terrible thing for a qb. He can be really great for 2 or 3 drives and then really avg to bad. Hard for a team to score and even move the ball a lot of the time

When it’s 3rd and long and you complete a 2 yd out pattern or a dump off to a tailback for 1 yard, completion percentage matters not. Our 3rd down conversation percentage is absolute garbage.

It's all bad.

Stats do indicate BF ought to be throwing more on 1st down. However, I don't think they are counting the times Petras is getting sacked on 1st down attempting to pass--those show up as 1st down run. Petras must lead the world in getting sacked on 1st down play action.

By the time 3rd down rolls around, it is usually 3rd and long and the opponent pins their ears back and Iowa fans are shocked when they get a conversion.
