With teams that play tight M2M like Indiana did last night is when we seem to struggle. We struggle to drive, we struggle to screen well, and we struggle to get off clean shots. Would have liked to see a lot more of JoeT and Uhlis last night to break up some of the defense and get some easier looks.

Teams are going to notice our performance last night against tough man. That's the blueprint for giving us fits.

This shouldn't be new information for any opposing team that's been paying attention, as this has been the case for a number of years,.. That said, I think Indiana's man defense last night was the best we've come up against so far this year...

I don't think it's any real secret. Fortunately, most teams don't have the raw talent that Indiana has and it appeared they actually felt like playing hard against a ranked team for a change. They have a home game against the dumpster fire Rutgers next, but then go to Michigan, home against Illinois and then our rematch. We'll see how those go.

I have always felt Joe T needs to be the full-time point guard. I get that he can be reckless and play out of control sometimes (although I attribute some of that to him trying to do too much to earn more playing time), but what he gives you on the defensive end and his ability to take people off the dribble is something Iowa sorely needs.

Of course, the question becomes, then who sits? Well, I don't have a good answer for that. Personally, I think Connor should be coming off the bench, but that ain't happening. So probably the best answer is to have JBo come off the bench, but as a SG. Ulis needs to be the back up PG.

What I will say is this: more athletic teams are going to continue to give Iowa fits if they continue to trot out the same lineup. Illinois is probably going to destroy Iowa.

I think that is what people are missing a little bit. Indian played out of their minds on that end and it showed. Obviously we missed shots but that was the best defensive effort from a team against Iowa this year hands down.

Not to mention defense. Joe T and Ulis are an upgrade from the starting guards on the defensive end. I don't know if it would have won the game last night but certainly wish Fran would have gone to Joe T, Ulis, and Perkins more in the 2nd half.

Iowa will struggle with MSU's defense as well. If teams are allowed to be physical with Iowa's guards, they struggle. Garza even struggled with the physicality last night.

That was one thing I noticed last night also that they were letting both sides get away with a lot of grabbing and holding. Our style does not usually do well this those types of teams.

If Iowa is behind in the score, then I like JoeT because he is going to rattle cages and get into grill of the other team and make things happen, sometimes that includes his own turnovers. Iowa was playing with a lead for over half the Indiana game, I would like to have seen some Ulis at PG and let JBO play off the ball and share PG in some sets. As soon as Iowa got behind, it should have been JoeT time.

With CJF normally being a 3pt threat but out with injury, I don't think Fran had much choice but to play JBO big minutes and hope he would catch fire.. .which unfortunately never happened. Iowa's inside/outside game requires some threat of 3pt shot. Even though JBo's shots weren't falling, teams don't help off him.

Connor...yes he is a great passer, but he is a role player unless he can hit the 3pt shot consistently he is getting left open and his defender is helping elsewhere. I get that CMAC knows how to run the offense, but in the end, you need some shooters and playing CMAC means you one less shooter out there.

I'm curious if Ulis can hit the 3pt shot...if he can hit it when wide open better than CMAC, then I don't see why he can't get some of CMAC minutes.

In retrospect, it appears that Fran turned the wrong knobs and part of the loss is on him. He had some strange lineups and Iowa's defense was poor (giving up 49% shooting, 47% from 3) and the offense was also poor.
If he'd gone with a better defensive unit during the scoring drought, at least they would have kept the game closer to potentially get to end and hope for some lucky breaks to go Iowa's way vs playing down 10-12 pts with 2minutes before going all out on defense.

I feel like I am a publicist for Ulis, so have started to back off a little but the guy should be playing more. As much as I like Toussaint for his defense and toughness, he is just herky jerky and not a fluid point guard. He is young, I get it, but Ulis is heady, smooth and has more than enough athleticism. Not as fast as JT mind you but much more under control. I believe the better fit for our offense.

100 % on board and I'd be more on board if it were possible.

Until Ulis proves he can't play, I'd like to see if he really can, and in limited minutes he's been very solid IMO. I don't understand the risk or what we have to lose. Sorry, just don't.

I think Fran has completely mishandled Toussaint this year. Has been quick to pull him, lets him go cold on the bench and plays him a lot of times with the wrong grouping. As a result Toussaint is not developing, has lost confidence, and overall has regressed in some areas and not expanded on his strengths.

Oh yes, that raw talent that has amassed a 4-4 record in the B1G and 9-6 overall record.

I’m sure people feel this is an understandable loss at home for a supposedly top B1G team thought to be a #1 seed in the big dance.

You’re a ledge jumper. Michigan lost by 17 to Minnesota who is also 4-4 in conference in case you weren’t aware. Any team is going to struggle if they can’t make shots like Iowa in the second half against IU

Right, I am basing my view on limited minutes of course. But I also have seen quite a lot of JT, so to your point, let Ulis play at least a little more. Now I am sure Fran is also trying to shepherd Toussaint along as well and not wanting to rock his psychee, but he has to see the same things we are.

You don' think Indiana has talent? The last four years their recruiting class was ranked 2nd, 6th, 2nd and 3rd in the B1G. By comparison, Iowa was 11th, 11th, 12th, and 9th. The problem for Indiana has been to get all that talent motivated, playing hard and pulling in the same direction. McCaffery is much better at this than Miller.

Yeah, it sucks that we couldn't hold them off on Thursday. An even worse loss than the road loss at Nebraska last season in my estimation, but it's done and can't be changed now. We just have to pick up one on the road from one of the contenders just to get back to even.

And Minnesota is down 12 points to 2-6 in conference Maryland with 2:30 to go. At the Barn! :)
