What about Dembele? I also think Big O, will end up as more then just a "decent get".....If we are talking solely recruiting rankings - Fran hasn't landed a highly ranked, out-of-state recruit with zero ties to the program since Garza. And that was back in 2017.
Owen Freeman was a decent get. But Fran really needs to start stacking out-of-state recruiting wins. This kid would be a huge start.
Not close to national level type guys. He’s been bridesmaid a bunch thoughWhat about Dembele? I also think Big O, will end up as more then just a "decent get".....
Let's hope so. The last "Big O" was far less than a "decent get"What about Dembele? I also think Big O, will end up as more then just a "decent get".....
Just for fun here are the recruiting rankings of the 4 commits from last year's class from the 4 major recruiting sites:That's fine, I too am hopeful that Owen will turn out really well.
But in terms of rankings - neither Owen Freeman nor Dembele were top 150 guys.
I know rankings aren't everything. I know recruiting "experts" aren't always right. I know Fran has found a ton of diamonds in the rough.
But lets be honest with ourselves: you would have rather have 5 recruits in the top 100 than 5 guys who aren't in the top 100. Our last crop of recruits were solid - but we need more in the coming years if we want to take the next step (sweet sixteen).
I think Angel Reese will entice him to LSU.
I've thought all along that Freeman would be McCaffery's next diamond in the rough. I will be surprised if he doesn't wind up on some All-B1G teams eventually and maybe sooner rather than later. He has the body, the skillset and the determination to excel. So each of these recruits were a top-150 ranked kid in at least 1 service. Oddly enough, Freeman had the best offers and IMO was the biggest recruiting win and he was the lowest composite ranked recruit.

Yeah the recruiting has definitely gotten better. By all metrics, last years class was Fran's best yet. Hopefully that amounts to positive things on the court.Cook, Nunge, Garza were Fran at his best when recruiting out of state and kids without previous ties to Hawkeye program. This last class with the big out East was a pretty good pickup (i.e. not the type of athlete avalilable instate) and I think the jury is out on the two Illinois kids.
Perkins was a good pickup. Bowen also. That is the type of out of state recruiting I'd like to see out of Fran.
I think Fran has done better recruiting this past 5 years than he did the previous 5. There was a really poor recruiting period of a few years that included Dom Uhl, Wagner, Ellingson, Hutton, Dailey, Flemming in which nearly every out of state recruit was a bust.
Barnes has a helluva recruiting pitch. I can't recall the kid's name, but he ended up choosing Tennessee over Iowa last year. Here's quotes from Compton on his top five.
Iowa: “The Iowa Hawkeyes aren’t new when it comes to producing NBA level players year in and year out. Their NBA background includes lots of forwards who have succeeded at that next level which is important because that’s where I want to go. Also with the way Coach (Courtney) Eldridge continuously compares me and thinks I can be those guys who have came through the university is something I honestly see myself in that position as well.”
LSU: “The Tigers have been ever present since they offered me July of last year. There’s always been a coach in contact. If it isn’t, Coach (Ronnie) Hamilton is giving me a call or Coach (Cody) Toppert is sending me some game film. I felt like someone has always keep that contact with me and reassured me that I am wanted at LSU and they make that known pretty frequently. I just think it’s so important how the coaches constantly check in with me a lot. Also the blood runs deep when it comes to LSU Basketball they’re familiar with having pros in the program.”
San Diego State: “With the Aztecs coming off an amazing season, it just starts with Coach (JayDee) Luster being that guy from day one who kept it real with me and how he sees me fitting in at SDSU. Or even how they will help with my development and training is huge. You need to be somewhere they really want you and want to help you get better. From the start of the summer head, Coach (Brian) Dutcher being at every game he can possibly be at and always keeping in contact with my mother or even my coaches is different. That isn’t something you see out of a lot of head coaches it shows how much they really care for you.”
Tennessee: “The Volunteers are such a well structured and coached program. Over the years I have always taken notice to their success and culture they have been building up, and in college that’s what matters a lot. That’s something that not every program has and Coach (Rick) Barnes and his staff have over there at UT. Also the love that the entire state shows for the school is just amazing that’s a great environment to be around, especially for college and being away from home."
UNLV: “The university closest to me of course. They were the 4th school to offer me and (Kevin) Kruger and his entire staff have stayed on me since. Even if it’s a Strive For Greatness game my 16s year up until the Peach Jam championship, someone has always been there and been in contact with me. They always say I can come watch practice and I’m welcome over there whenever. They’re constantly calling and checking and even though I’m down the road but that’s really important to me.”
Nunge had ties to Iowa with living here growing up and for a week was neighbors with the McCaffrey'sCook, Nunge, Garza were Fran at his best when recruiting out of state and kids without previous ties to Hawkeye program. Too many people just depend on the stars the recruit has. We've all see cases where a highly ranked recruit just doesn't perform at the level his stars predicted. McCaffery is a little like Ferentz. He tends to get the most out of the kids he recruits and three star recruits, like the Murrays, excel under his tutelage.Yeah the recruiting has definitely gotten better. By all metrics, last years class was Fran's best yet. Hopefully that amounts to positive things on the court.
I think some folks here and on other sites just see how close Fran got to a couple high 4 and 5 stars and then got beat out by Duke, Tennessee, etc and for some reason that has soured everyone in thinking the recruiting has been bad. Iowa realistically won't have the same caliber of recruiting classes as Michigan St., Ohio St., Indiana, and Maryland (especially in the NIL era), but Iowa of late has been out-recruiting or at least on par with Wisconsin, Minnesota and Purdue and is well ahead of the Minnesota/PSU/Nebraska/Northwestern tier. Basically, Fran has been recruiting at a realistic and respectable level the past few years and I'm hopeful that it'll pay off soon.
Yeah, that class was disastrous, it set us back a couple years. Every other class has been solid to very good. An argument could be made almost too good with the number of guys who have left early for the NBA, but I realize thats a good problem reflective of a good program. I think the current crop of freshmen has potential to be one of his best classes overall.Cook, Nunge, Garza were Fran at his best when recruiting out of state and kids without previous ties to Hawkeye program. I've seen him listed anywhere from 6' 7" to 6' 9". If he is 6' 7", could Fran be looking at him as a SF instead of PF?
He has no jump shot. You really can't play on the perimeter in today's game without a jumper. He's much more closer to just an undersized C than he is a 3. He's got a massive wingspan which is why he is able to play a lot bigger than he actually is. I've read that his wingspan is over 7 feet.I've seen him listed anywhere from 6' 7" to 6' 9". I had read his range was limited. Could be a good finisher on our fast break. He has no jump shot. You really can't play on the perimeter in today's game without a jumper. He would be amazing in transition. He seems to have decent ball handling, so he'd be able to attack slow footed big man off the dribble.I had read his range was limited. Could be a good finisher on our fast break.
Overall, our b-ball recruiting has been VERY pedestrian over the years and is why we’ve been averaging 15 losses per year over the past ten years. We have to stop beating MAC teams for players and beat out teams with a pulse if we want to be anything else but a MAC level program, which we are. That's fine, I too am hopeful that Owen will turn out really well.

Great. We do not have a very good history against UNLV.BTW, Compton is no longer visiting Tennessee. LSU is also crystal balled to be picking up a top-50 big man recruit. So it may be Iowa vs SDSU & UNLV. Visiting next weekend per Twitter reports.
Yes I still remember the thread where the board was moaning that we got a set of 2 star twins. Fran has shown he doesn’t need the 4 or 5 stars. But you definitely need to find a star every 2-3 years.Overall, our b-ball recruiting has been VERY pedestrian over the years and is why we’ve been averaging 15 losses per year over the past ten years. I was curious, so I looked it up.That just flat out is not true.
Fran has had Iowa in the top half of the B1G, so you are understating his accomplishments. The real knock against Fran is how lousy Iowa has played in the Dance.Overall, our b-ball recruiting has been VERY pedestrian over the years and is why we’ve been averaging 15 losses per year over the past ten years. Pretty pathetic program and it starts with recruiting….especially too many slow white guys. This isn’t a freakin’ swim team!!!!!I was curious, so I looked it up.
Over the past 10 years, we've averaged 12.6 losses per year.
If you go back 16 years, to include Fran's earliest seasons and the Lickliter era, the number climbs to 14.625 losses per year.
FYI.
