phil mickelson

Phil looks jacked. Growth hormone or roids? Looks like a different person.

No one here doubted Phil has had great success as a professional golfer...but he does have a rep for some classic collapses, too. Please don’t deny that. I am happy for him and his success today...winning at 50 is no small task..winning a “ major” at 50 is even more impressive. Those 6 majors Phil won were not choke jobs...but I bet There are 3 or 4 more that were.

I'm sorry......but that crowd was out of line.......not every week can be The Waste Management/Phoenix Open.....PGA needs MORE security, better crowd control....and maybe quit selling beer after 3PM on Sunday.....This cannot be something the PGA or professional golf wants to continue. This was a major golf tournament, not a beer hall Puch! There was nothing cute about this crowd on the last hole today.
JFC Joel. Then I guess you must think Arnold Palmer was a big choker too. Palmer won 1 more major than Phil but had at least as many meltdowns in majors. Again, JFC.

Give Phil his due. Maybe he should have won 8 or 10 majors, but winning this one at 50 puts him into a different league.

Agree....Fowler can't carry Phillip's jock strap.
Phil is really a talented golfer but he never had the work ethic that many of his contemporaies had but raw ability-wise, Phil,is one of the best....As great as his raw golf ability is, his golf head misfires all to often.
(Imagine a golfer with PM playing skill and length...and a work ethic of a ZJ?)
Just horrendous horrible takes from Joel.

You've kind of beat that dog to death. Maybe Phil doesn't need golf the same way others do. For a "work ethic" it would be hard to top Tiger but I'd take Phil's life over Tiger's any day.

The way Phil put his career on hold and battled with his wife to beat her cancer is revealing of his character and truly heroic. Been a fan ever since.

Golf Channel had a great “Live from the PGA” interview where he broke down the round hole by hole and talked about his transformation including diet. They‘re replaying it on the channel. Snippets here, but won’t let me link the videos.

I watched IOwa beat tOSU in Kinnick a few years ago...and watched that post-game crowd storm the field......Unbelievable...but the crowd sure as hell wasn't the highlight of that game.

He's giving lazy "Phil takes" from 20 years ago, that weren't even accurate then.

There's stuff you can rag on Phil for, but "work ethic" and not keeping himself in shape is absurd and ridiculous with what he's accomplished over the last 15 years.

Remember, Phil won 2 PGA tournaments just a couple years ago when he was in his late 40's. Now has probably the best age 40 plus record in PGA history. Again, just stupid, idiotic takes from Joel.

Boy, that ruins my day! I’m not a big Phil Fellator. The guys a talent and a helluva golfer. I have never said anything less. His win this weekend is a great story. Congrats to Phillip. He deserved the win...that is the best he has played in many years.
It's not about being a Phil Fellator, it's just about giving the guy his due.

You don't win consistently on the PGA tour (including 2 majors) through your 40's by being a lazy fat guy.

Again, you're giving a common take per Phil from circa 2003, and it's just an incredibly stupid take once you look at what he's accomplished in the last 10-15 years.

Does not change the fact that Phil has had some classic collapses.
Phil is not close to Arnold Palmer in importance to the game...only one or two others are...but yes...as great as Palmer was to the game, he will always be remembered for his double bogey on 18 to lose the Masters to Gary Player...and his collapse on the back 9 to lose the US Open to Casper in San Francisco...but Palmer will be remembered for hitching up his pants and bringing professional golf to the public and giving television a reason to telecast it every weekend....and for The Golf Channel. Palmer was a little more conscious of his professional image than most today and understood the importance of maintaining a clean untethered image.
BTW PJ...where have I not given Phillip his deserved credit? His career has been quite successful. However, there have been more than the occasional “Phil moments” and if you go back to the start...the comment that got this started was a reference by a TV commentator that Phil does have a history of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Someone thought it was an inappropriate comment...I happened to agree with the commentator. In today’s television, most things are fair game. As long as it is factual...

You may play like an old man, but try hitting the ball 366 yards at 50.
He was outdriving Brooks all day, albeit Brooks may not be 100% healthy.

Length off the tee has never been an issue for Lefty. Hitting it straight has been.

That course played like a U.S. Open course the last 2 days. Anybody on the leaderboard finish below par on Sunday?

Water, narrow fareways, bunkers, deep rough and trees are the only defense courses have against the bombers these days. The course was the real winner this past weekend.

Circa 2003? What are you talking about...actually Phil’s epic failure have happened since 2003...so wat are you saying here?
Again..Phil has has a great career...HoF no doubt..,but like most others...he has experienced some tremendous lows, too. And those deserve some attention, too. But that’s golf.

Even Phil called it "unnerving".

Yeah, can you IMAGINE a huge crowd swarming the players in the days of Bobby Jones?

First, it was Sam Snead & Ben Hogan, then it was
Arnold Palmer & Jack Nicklaus. Yet, the saga of
Tiger Woods is in the minds of golf fans today.
Lefty Phil helped us enjoy golf this past weekend
with his 6th Major win.

Great photo Ron...now provide the background and context to the pic. In the 1920-30s Golf was a wee bit more of a National game in Scotland than it is today in South Carolina.
Bobby Jones might be the greatest golfer ever...and Scotland regarded him as one of their own.
There is a pic somewhere of Palmer literally climbing thru the crowd on the 72nd hole of one of his British Open wins..it took him several minutes to make his way they the mob to the green..his shirt was stretched and pulled as he emerged...Jones and Palmer were truly loved Americans in Scotland...add Tom Watson to that list, too.

Most impressive to me was watching Phil be the one under control and the other guys hitting it everywhere on the course except the fairways and greens. The golf course was a frickin' monster yesterday.

I’d rather golf in a downpour than consistent 15-25 mph wind any day. The guys who got out early yesterday were fortunate, because the afternoon play was a bloodbath. Phil, Oosty and Koepka really played remarkably well given the conditions.

I like to play golf. I like to watch golf. I like to drink beer. I like to cheer on my team.

I haaaate golf bros.

So much this. Going to live golf has become semi-insufferable; drunk brahs still doing mashed potato and Baba booey.

And I’m all for having a good time and a cocktail or three.

The only place that shit doesn’t happen is Augusta.

So what would you consider a "collapse"? Everybody talks about the '09 Open but that's just dumb. He had a great shot at 13, eagled it, and tied with Glover. That one hole is the only thing that makes his bogies at 15 and 17 a "collapse". Barnes was one shot off the lead at the turn and bogied 11 and 12. Fisher was one shot off the lead at 13 and bogied 15 and 17 (sound familiar?). The only guy playing out his ass that day was Duval who cut the lead to one at 16 and then bogied 17...just like Phil. Did they ALL choke?

I didn’t expect him to hold on. Tom Watson and Fred Couples taught me to be skeptical. I’m glad he did, though. It’s great for golf.

The guy’s short game is just incredible. Many casual fans won’t realize just how good his second shot on 17 was.

Golfers wear jock straps? No wonder I suck. I've been doing it wrong all these years.

It was kind of fun when it was just the 16th at TPC Scottsdale. Now it's the stadium hole everywhere. When that drunk doofus ran down and put his arm around Phil on the walk up the 18th yesterday I just shook my head.

Yep. Exactly. Every player knows that's the deal at TPC and some really love it - like Bubba.

The PGA lost control of the crowd yesterday and should have seen it coming w/ Phil in contention.

The TV guys said it was the longest drive on 16 the entire week! By the 50-year-old guy! That is amazing.
Yeah crazy. Phil is just a different character, I believe they said his driver is a 7.5deg bent down to 6.5...which is crazy. Then goes to a 2 wood that is i think 12deg? Then had a 1iron in the bag till yesterday when the face cracked before the round. Not a lot of players throwing those clubs in the bag!

Ricky Fowler is a no talent marketing ass clown. Phil Mickelson has actual talent. His short game is one of the best in the business.

They definitely should have controlled that aspect of it. Touching players should never be allowed, but the enthusiasm of the crowd was wonderful to see.

And I don’t think Phil is complaining about the crowd stopping his ball a couple of times and trampling down the rough.

The point is, enthusiastic crowds on the golf course isn't a new thing.
