I've heard the hype surrounding Chip Kelly winning the award. But he hasn't been a coordinator since 2007. Plus with all that talent they have, it shouldn't be too hard to do well.

Meanwhile Phil Parker has single handily gotten Iowa to ten wins. He's had to win with an offense that is lucky to score double digits. Iowa had the number five rated defense, but honestly they were better than Michigan, Ohio State, Washington or Georgia. I mean if you put the QB Iowa had in any of those teams offense and the offensive coordinator in place. You can't tell me those defenses hold up.

So if Phil works his magic again, he should get the award. I just hope Kirk hired a coordinator on the other side that is at least competent. Otherwise I can see Phil looking for other opportunities. He's an Ohio guy and a Michigan State graduate. I don't know much about Johnathan Smith's defensive coordinator, I know Ohio State has a good one. But what if the Cincy job came open?

Does anyone believe Phil is a potential replacement for Kirk down the line?

I don't think they ever give it to the same guy in back to back years. There are too many good assistant coaches for that to happen. Phils been the DC for 13 years and never won it, and they've been a top ten defense many of those years. To answer your second question, NO, I don't think Phil has much interest in being the HC at Iowa or anywhere else. He's not a CEO type guy. The guy doing all the interviews, dealing with the media etc... Thats not Phil. He likes being that leader in the trenches, (another reason that he stays on the field, and not in the press box like many DC's) not dealing with NIL, media etc.. Plus he's probably not much younger then Kirk. This is also his 26th year at Iowa. I think he heads out with Kirk, but if he stays, I don't see him being the HC even if they offer..

I don't know why people can't understand what's right in front of them. Phil has said forever that he never wants to be a head coach, for the reasons kceasthawk noted. Simple as that. Phil's not in it for the money or the prestige. He's in it for the kids and the competition.

But I will tell ya there is an Iowa assistant who has a shot at the Broyles Award this year: Tim Lester.

Breathe life into the worst offense in the country in your first year, play a QB who knows what the hell he's doing, score some points and rack up some first downs to keep your top-ranked D rested . . . yup, Lester could be your guy.

All true, and if the offense still stumbles and we have to win kicking field goals and "punting is winning" maybe Levar Woods gets the nod as special teams guru. I like your idea better though....

Hmmm.... How often does a coordinator without a top 5 or 10 unit win one of these things?? I'm thinking I have almost as good of odds of dating Taylor Swift as Lester has of winning this award.

I do- read my post on it … even to get 5 years or so out of him would be awesome… but like many say he’s probably done when Kirk is done but I would hope not as I don’t know his exact age and how long he wants to keep coaching but I would love to have him as the next best head coach
