Pico: It's going to be a war, Metcalf: I'll have an army waiting for him

I think Brent wins a very close match. I would not be the least bit surprised if Pico wins though.

Interesting comment by Pico on the threats Metcalf presents. Didn't seem to have a whole lot of respect for Brent's offensive arsenal. Basically said he pulls on the head and shoots a high crotch and that that's all he really needs to prepare for. Either Pico is underestimating Brent, or he's just confident that he'll beat him without much trouble. Maybe a little of both. In any case, Pico certainly does seem confident. I was a little surprised that he didn't show more deference to the 3x world team member. Then, again, you have to believe in your ability to beat the guy.

It was interesting that Pico idolized Brent growing up and watched a lot of his college matches.

Whatever the outcome, should be one heck of a match and one heck of a night.

These guys have wrestled many practice matches. I'm sure it would not have been set up if it wasn't going to be close match. I'm excited.

I may be getting old but I thought you spent the last year informing us that Pico is already better than Metcalf. I figured you would at least pick him to win.

This is going to be a good one. Pico is a lot closer than some people think. Anybody have a link?

Boy should be interesting. wanna talk about a couple hammers who can hand fight and shoot a left handed hi-crotch.Even if the match is close, thats not good news for Metcalfs longevity at 65 kilos. Pico only being 18(17?) his learning curve is going up exponentially

Bad news for a lot of people. He has beat Reece Humphrey and a recent world champ. Was beating senior level guys when he was 16.Also, heard he killed a bear when he was only 3. He spends a lot of time in Russia learning from them too. Love me some Metcalf, but Pico is a tough kid with a great attitude. Will be fun.

You are getting old. Never said that once, said and looked at common opponents that Pico had a good shot.

Going w Metcalf, until someone is able to beat him consistently. You know...because he just wins on conditioning, heavy hands and limited offensive skill set. The same stuff others have been saying for past decade and yet he's still the man.

I think Metcalf will be able to fight through/around Pico hand def. Friday night will be intense, I can't wait.

To quote Colonel Trautmann from Rambo- First Blood

Better have a whole lot of body bags!

I love that scene and it fits the war metaphor.

Re: To quote Colonel Trautmann from Rambo- First Blood

I don't think there's any doubt that Pico is close. He's proven that against legit senior-level competition internationally. He may be young, but there's no doubt his skill set is world-class. I haven't seen anyone predicting Metcalf in a cakewalk; I think most, if not all, Iowa fans realize that Pico is for real and a legit threat to beat Brent.

Of course, this one's just for show and some dough. It will count this fall. By the Olympic Trials next spring, these two are going to be very familiar with each other. I know they've worked out together but don't know exactly how much. If anyone knows, that info would be much appreciated.

There was a very entertaining rumor going around regarding one of the sparring sessions between Pico and Metcalf. As the alleged rumor goes, Metcalf got "chippy" with Pico during a session and started to turn it into more than a wrestling match. Pico responded in kind and knocked him out(Remember Pico is a World Level boxer and MMA prodigy).

I doubt there is any truth to this, but I think it would definitely have major influence on each other's psyche if true...........

If it's on the Mat it has to be true. That is a very pro-Iowa board and no one on there would ever make something up.

I use to think Metcalf was the toughest SOB alive - well back to Chuck Norris for me unless the Mat reports Pico knocked him out too.

Pico has a more limited offensive arsenal than Brent. If his head snaps aren't working he isn't going to score.

Please note: I not only point out it was an entertaining "rumor" but that I "doubt" there was any truth to it.

I simply found it funny and thought it may bring some levity, or at least entertaining conversation to the board.

It also, fits quite well into the "war" and "army" theme of the thread!

He is a stud but his learning curve isn't anything like a typical 18 year old. He has had a personal trainer for most of his life and is probably closer to 25 than 18 on his learning curve.

No problem MSU - you stated that in another post. I was commenting in general about the Mat - I do go read some of the bs on the board occasionally - it can be humorous and entertaining. You can find some interesting rumors on that board (even a few good ones on this one at times also).

This is plausible, anyone that's ever been in a wrestling room has seen guys get heated. I think everyone would say that Pico would be the favorite in an MMA matchup with Brent.

Believable story, no idea if it happened or not.

The Battle of the Heavy Hands.

BTW, I can't see Metcalf getting snapped down. Superman does NOT get snapped down, don't care if it's Pico.

I wouldnt take Brent in a fight either. Pico is a UFC champion dream for Dana. Just a matter of time. Deosnt mean that Brents not the better wrestler though..

MMA sure doesn't seem to be Brent's style at all, but I'd bet he'd be very tough in the octagon if he put his mind to it and trained MMA full-time. Not saying anything about Brent relative to Pico in MMA -- just that I think he has the toughness, work ethic, and talent to be a great MMA fighter. Considering how well Hendricks made the jump, I can't help but think Brent could be just as successful. Not that we'll ever see it.

+1. I agree completely. I think he would be an animal.

I linked it for you. Pico better have improved a ton since that match or he is getting TF'd
I agree, but I have little doubt that Pico is Improving. At 18 years old he isn't even at his prime yet. At 28, Metcalf is nearing the end of his. I still go Metcalf in this one, He is a great veteran wrestler who is still at the top of his game. I do think by the time Pico hits his 20's, Pico will have surpassed him. If Pico can beat Metcalf now, at 18 years old...Damn...I definitely see an Olympic medal for him in a few years.

I'd be very surprised if Pico beats Metcalf tomorrow night. I think the Ramos vs Cejudo bout will be far more competitive.
Overall, Team Iowa is the heavy favorite going in which I think was purposefully set up that way.

As much as anything, I'm curious to see if DSJ has gotten his mojo back. Would be great to see him perform to his ability in front of the Iowa faithful one last time.
