Back Home in Iowa
I was reading some articles on my phone regarding potential replacements for Tim Beckman at Illinois and PJ Fleck was mentioned. However, at the end of the article, a little tidbit was mentioned that Fleck was holding out for the Iowa job if Coach Ferentz was let go after this year. I tried to find the same article on line so that I could post a link but to avail. Has anyone heard this before? It sounds like he is a tremendous recruiter and only 34.

Don't know anything about him wanting the Iowa job....no connection. but, the guy that will be interesting to watch is bob Stitt the new Montana coach. Watched their game yesterday against NDSU and offensively they are fun to watch and he is a gambler....runs a very Oregon...esk type of uptempo offense.

Again, will need to see this over the whole season...but if he is successful after a couple years I'd imagine someone is going to call...

That is, literally, the stupidest thing that I've ever seen posted anywhere.

You've never had dreams or goals in life? You sound like a real loser.
Dreams and goals are great, but keep it to yourself. I repeat, saying you are holding out for the Iowa job is disrespectful to Kirk Ferentz, and makes Fleck sound like an ass, ( if he really said that).

That guy is as energetic as they come. I would promise that we would have several alternative uniforms with him.

He is recruiting well and certainly seems to be on the rise.

Said to whom? It was reported 3rd party by a regional/national sports writer. He certainly didn't interview Fleck prior to writing the article. He probably heard "through the grapevine" from a person or persons that are allegedly close to him.

You've never told your wife/girlfriend/friend, in a private conversation, that you hope to be at Point X in your career a few years from now?

I stand by my previous statement: You're a loser.

The Greenstein article is linked below, with the one line about Iowa. I don't buy it. Division 1 jobs are hard enough to come by, you can't wait and hope for an individual one. Iowa is a second tier job, a nice job, but not something to hold out for.

But word is Fleck would favor a fresh start at Iowa if the school parts ways with Kirk Ferentz.

Not sure if you guys remember this but wasnt he the guy who was at Western Michigan when we kicked their butts a couple years ago? and coined the "Row the boat" thing, and was miffed about something Ferentz said to him as they shook hands at midfield?

First two things yes, not sure about the last. He's definitely a clown. He can recruit, though. Kinda of a Tim Brewster-type, IMO.

"You know you didn’t play very well when the opposing head coach, who I respect and admire, just looks at you and goes, “Just one of those games.” That’s our thought about what he says. Kirk Ferentz just said it’s just one of those games. I guess it was."

"I was impressed with Iowa. It doesn’t surprise me in what a Kirk Ferentz team is like, he’s one of the classiest men in college football. He’s also one of the best coaches in college football. He’s an offensive line guy, he’s tough, and he sets the tone for his team."

"Iowa believes in its system, believes in its culture, believes in the football way of life at Iowa. You can tell everyone does," Fleck said.

That sucks. Why do people want to constantly change one of the best uniforms in sports?

If you want a different uniform every year, go cheer for the Clowns.

Those hideous Pittsburgh Steelers knockoffs? Cmon, man. Iowa has the worst unis this side of Maryland.

Maybe he likes the thought of being at Iowa because Iowa has shown with their last two coaches that you can have a long career in one place and maybe he wants to be in the Big Ten. It was obvious from his comments when they played Iowa that he really admires Kirk. He is a great recruiter, young, energetic and I think if he continues to build Western Michigan than there is no reason he shouldn't be considered for the next coach.

Another reason he would be good at Iowa is that he played and coached at Northern Illinois so he has ties to Illinois for recruiting which is important to Iowa and strong ties to Michigan obviously. He was a good receiver in college and played for a short time in the NFL. He has coached at Ohio State, Rutgers, Northern Illinois and now Western Michigan, and in the NFL. I can't imagine though that he won't get a job before Iowa's opens unless for some reason Iowa just tanks this year.

Is this gonna be a recurring thing where our fans are gonna keep lobbying this coach and that coach each week as "hey this guy seems legit *nudge nudge, wink wink*" until the day Kirk is gone and the new coach is finally chosen?

I'd say the one thing that this guy has going for him is that he is not Pat Fitzgerald or Bret Bielema. If that's all that mattered then SURE, this guy can be our next coach!.............but it isn't.

Who do you think is a good candidate?

I haven't been on here much has anyone mentioned Bielema as being a great replacement?
Now that's an interesting choice - thinking outside the box. Not sure if this has been mentioned but thinking of ex-Hawks what about one of the stoops boys? Mark is doing a good job recruiting at Kentucky.

I love our uniforms and didn't say I wanted them to change. I just said he has changed the WMU uniforms and has added alternate options. If you don't like change I suggest you don't watch the Iowa/Minnesota game this year.

Be is a high energy, innovative young coach.

I think a place like Illinois or Indiana would be tough for most anyone.

Iowa as a program is set up to be a top 15-20 team the majority of years. A guy like this would thrive and maybe take it even further. His system might or might not win consistently at Illinois or Indiana.

I think alot of coaches could keep iowa in the top 20.

yea western michigan thinks he is a rising star. they gave him a huge raise to be the highest paid mac coach. the 2nd highest paid coach in the mac makes half of what he does

Why is everyone talking about a new head coach?

So what's KF excuse?

We aren't talking about Ferentz.

But since you asked .

Ferentz did a great job. Comparable to Hayden fry. (Read Morehouse article )

He got complacent and let things pass him by. He has had a wake up call and if you can't see the big changes he has made with the program, you don't want to see it. Unfortunately, it may not pay off this year but the payoff is coming.

KF is a not a great game day coach. Just look at his record in close losses, it is one of the worst in the nation. He is trying to fix that IMO. Again, hope to see the payoff from that.
The silver lining is KF is a great CEO and runs an excellent program. If he were at Alabama , Michigan or Florida instead of Iowa he would have played for NC'S IMO. But, he wouldn't have lasted if he got complacent like he did here. But he wouldn't have had the same struggles. I think he would have been a better version of Bob Stoops if he were at a top tier school

Why is Iowa "set up" but not Illinois or Indiana?

Do you seriously need to even ask that?

Who am I kidding. You simply like to start shit and argue. Pathetic.

Iowa is a football school and the Hawkeyes have been "the shit" in Iowa for decades. Support, both financial and fan base. NFL resume. Facilities.

Those other 2 have had very little success and have a pitance of support.

But tell us your opinion

Yes, seriously, what sets up Iowa better?

My guess is that you thought Iowa was set up better than Minnesota 5 years ago too, right?

Illinois alumni base is, what, double, Iowa's? You say their support it "pitance" compared to Iowas, based on what? Them playing poorly the last however many years? When Illinois has won, their fans have traveled, they just don't do much winning. Illinois has more than enough money to throw around. Beckman was paid $2M, Groce gets paid $1.7M. They are in a state with 4x as many residents.

To simply write them, or Indiana, off because Iowa has better support is ignorant and short-sighted. Its comments like this that show the cluelessness of fan-bases. There is very little that makes Iowa intrinsically better than any other school in the Big Ten, to pretend that Iowa has some predilection towards success compared to them is f****** stupid.

Iowa is not a "football" school more than it ever was a basketball school, if anything it is a wrestling school. Sure, football exceeded basketball in basketball's absolute darkest days, but one can't simply ignore the support it received in the 70s-2000s compared to football.

Let's actually flush this out. Which schools "should" be higher? Cherry picking from this years top 25:
Ohio State
Alabama
Auburn
USC
Oregon
Georgia
Florida State
Notre Dame
UCLA
LSU
Oklahoma

Ok, that is a pretty easy 11, all of which most people would likely pick at, near the top 11 every year.

So who else gets in, Michigan State? TCU? Arizona, Arizona State? Wisconsin? Stanford? Clemson? Georgia Tech? Missouri, Tennessee?

That is now more than 20. So which of those SHOULD Iowa be ahead of every year? Seriously, which ones would you place above it since 2002? Or will replace them with by 2020?

It would be one thing to say Iowa should be in contention for, competing with the top 20 each year, but you are claiming they should be in the top 15-20 the "majority" of years.

So I asked....on what do you base that? Because Iowa was "the shit" in Iowa?
